Another dead marans

Recommended Posts

Can't believe I'm writing this, but went out for a short time leaving the girls in their omlet netting run and have returned to find that Blossom, my beautiful splash marans - she of the really dark brown egg, has been killed. Bluebelle was also missing, but have since found her on top of a hedge. All girls are now locked in their secure (I hope) run and will not be let out again.

I stupidly thought that when Teasel died last week (by accident I thought) that there was no other threat about - what an idiot.

Oh I don't know what to say but I'm so sorry! what an awful time you have had lately.. it sounds like either a fox or similar is getting to them which may explain the netting accident also ( from panic?)

Try to keep you chin up, the other girls are safe now so please don't blame yourself.. I think sometimes it takes a bad expereince for us to realise where any weak spots are in our security.. it getting so cold that foxes are desperatlty hungry at the moment so I'm guessing what ever it was may be back so you are doing the right thing in keeping them in.

Its a reminder to us all that the danger is getting worse now the days are darker and colder..mine only free range at weekends now. but I do admit I don't stay outside with them all the time.. maybe I need to re think also..

My thought are with you, hopefully you will have a better time from now on.. have a good drink tonight and as I said please don't beat yourself up as you are obviously a caring Mum!.

Best wishes

I can't believe I'm reading it either, how terrible for you. I suppose its something for us all to think about - is our security as good as we think it is? Its no consolation but more of us knew about your girl and her egg laying capabilities than if you hadn't posted, so more of us feel sad with you but also enjoyed her at arms length as it were, as well.

Thanks for all your kind words.

Our walk in run is pretty secure, but my husband (who is absolutely gutted at this last disaster) has taken tomorrow morning off to make it into Fort Knox, as the girls now won't be out running about in the Omlet netting without us standing guard and will have to stay in their run.

Have given away so many of Blossom's beautiful eggs that we only have 3 left, but will blow one of them tomorrow as a reminder of just how large and very dark brown they were. She had only just twigged that she was to lay them in the cube!

Our only surviving marans - Tansy - has now started laying and although dark brown they're nowhere near Blossom's egg colour.

Thanks again

Sheila

PS Isn't it funny that people you've never met can be such a comfort?

So sorry to hear of even more bad news from you :( . It's hard not to blame your self but there were no signs of the fox when you found your other girl girl caught in the netting.

It is very tragic and sad news. I hope you and your OH find comfort in beefing up the security on the run.
