Whereabouts in Cheshire are you? We are in Stockport. I am in the process of teaching one of my dogs to find our chickens. He is an obedience competition dog that normally finds cloths. If mine are loose in the garden he will go and find any straying ones. I carry the chooks from our dog yard into the back garden so i can give him scent from my hands... He has only had a couple of days practise but is quite good at it. I dont expect him to carry them back just gather them as he would a sheep.... That bit still needs work but if you had the scent of your chook he would track where it has been.....If it was walking on the ground at some point..
