Looney
Brilliant approach! I like to smile a lot and hum when I go around the supermarket.....some people smile back and say hello! Some just look at me like I'm completely bonkers.

hillfamily
Well I can report that I have just been to my local Tesco to get some fresh crusty bread...the car park was full, the store was full, lots of stock on the shelves though and not an altercation in sight...I was in and out in 10 minutes :D
PapaJuliet
I went to the butcher in the town on the way home and it it was so crowded you couldn't move!!! Well, actually, that meant there were three people in there. Last year I had to queue along the front of his shop to get the bacon for breakfast (might have been Christmas Eve, though). We also did supermarket shopping and it was busy but not mayhem. Shelves were stocked, most checkouts open. But we couldn't get any Barry Norman pickled onions (Tesco have stopped doing them and Sainsbury had sold out) PJ
Guest
I picked up my (pre-ordered) turkey from M&S today and i had to queue at one counter to collect it and then queue at the til to pay for it! You'd think they'd have organised so you could pay at the same time as collecting it! The queue was right round the store and I only had the one item and would have had to wait for ages so I asked one of the floorwalkers if i could jump in as i only had 1 item and i had to get my 77 year old mum home as the gas man was coming to fix her central heating (true!) and she let me, bless her! I didn't dare turn around to see the faces of those still q'ing but to be fair, they had trolleys full and I had 1 item! The car park was a free for all but luckily we got in and out without too much hassle.
Lewis
One local petroleum establishment is open 24 hours a day all over the festive period - poor staff I can half understand that, with buying petrol, but people should plan ahead Asda was ok earlier, didn't hear any arguments at all ... we went to Homebase which was empty, and they were giving away £40 christmas trees for free just to get rid of them! Guest
wow, did you get one Lewis? I remember when i was a kid and we were in a large dept store in L'pool, Lewis' or Blacklers or somewhere like that, i think it was christmas eve and my mum asked what they were doing with their fully decorated display trees after Christmas and they said they throw them out (this was the days when recycling had never been invented!) so she offered them a few quid for one and they let her her have one for a pittance
dippy bird
Tesco's car park in macc was under snow today, not been cleared at all, but plenty of slippy parking spaces(thank goodness for 4x4's).Shop was full, but everyone was in good spirits.Couldn't get sprouts or streaky bacon, and it took me 45 mins to get off the car park Hey ho, thats Christmas shopping for ya. A chickychickychick-ENN!!
It's mad at the shops. Far too busy, shovey, bleep you and aggressive. The only way to beat the lunacy is to out-mad it. I have been managing to keep my personal space by singing Silver Bells audibly with a wobbly voiced croon, sniffing random boxes of things, saying 'that's rubbish' audibly and randomly and pointing and laughing at things, again, randomly. I live in Medway which is the devil's armpit/Jeremy Kyle's audience cherry-pick spot, so I make nooooo apologies. Looks mental. Actually works though. Lesley
Can I just put in a word for the cooks?......... I know it is just another day and the shops will be open again on Boxing Day but Boxing Day is no good if you're the one catering for 20 on Christmas Day and the whole family is expecting the full works! If you haven't planned ahead, if you aren't paid until the end of the month and if you don't have storage space then the last minute dash is important! It's very often the people cooking for just 2 or 4, or lucky enough to be visiting others, who think the rest of the world has gone mad . It doesn't really matter if you don't get that last Christmas Pud or the last bag of Yorkshires...........but it sure must feel like it at times! It doesn't excuse all the nastiness or fisticuffs and pasting on a big smile and singing would help a lot of people I'm catering for 12 this year - usually 15 so it must be easier this year - but......we do grow everything ourselves, including the meat, and have freezer space for advance planning....I'm done and I'm so glad I don't have to brave the shops! To all the cooks having to brave the shops as well.....
Alis girls
Tesco was wet, busy and car park an ice rink last night. Managed to get everything (I think) my only moan is not enough trollys, you had to skate across car park to get a wet one. But I was charm itself even when the conveyor belt packed up and I had to shove everything down to the girl who said she was worried the customers would think she was doing it on purpose esp as when all my stuff was off it worked again. sadietoo
Sainsburys in Chichester was busy yesterday morning, but we got round quite easily once we'd managed to secure a Trolley each!! Fortunately for us we are out on Christmas day (but for some reason I insisted on doing/taking the veg???) but I still needed everything for the rest of the Christmas weekend. Apart from no carrots we got everything else on our respective lists then it was a dash to the checkout. I queued in one cos it didn't look too bad and OH went for the self service...but he had a huge trolley load so I said it was madness....Well...turned round to find he had a member of staff to empty the trolley and beep the things through whilst he packed...so what's self service about that? (but if you're pushed for time it's worth a try as he was straight through in minutes!) My queue was held up interminably by someone who had forgotten to pick up her two turkeys from the collection point (yeah right!) and we all waited whilst some smally boy was sent off to find them. Of course I didn't live it down that he'd won....since he only goes shopping for food once a year there really was no need for him to be quite so smug for the rest of the day Back in the carpark it was fisticuffs because the people going in and the people coming out had managed to create their own little gridlock (it is a very poorly designed car park)..fortunately it didn't affect us .. which was great...cos we still had to drive to Exeter back to collect DD from Uni!! Lewis
Just been to Sainsburys (father forgot to get milk yesterday ) and it was fine again, the car park was rammed but there were no queues for the tills ... we were walking out and a couple were having an argument about him forgetting to pick something up though
Redwing
The queue for the car park at the big Tescos in Northampton today - HALF a mile long! I needed to go home that way so pulled a u turn and went a different way home as the queuers felt the need to block two lanes so the rest of us couldnt get past
The Dogmother
I agree with Lesley, much as I hate to see the shops open all hours and the fights going on, I work up until the last hour too and have to do a quick dash for the last minute things that I don't have room for at home. A friend reported staff doing traffic directing duties at the local Te$co.
