Anyone been to Gozo?

Recommended Posts

Hi looking for some summer sun this year (we usually do Scotland or Ireland or Cornwall )and are quite taken with Gozo. We don't do crowds and like the idea of our own pool etc. Anyone been? Where to recommend, companies to use, flight ideas and anything else that might be of use to us?

Thanks!

I went many years ago. Spent a week on Malta and then a week on Gozo.

Gozo was very quiet! Lovely beaches but very little to do. Nice restaurants. NOT cheap and we are talking 20+ years ago. A day trip to Comino is worth while. Visit the blue lagoon. Stunning beach and, erm, lagoon ( ) Only one hotel on the island and no cars, only donkeys :D

Malta is much busier. Valetta the capital is very busy. Day trips are easy as many ferries across to the islands.

Can't recommend flights/hptels etc as went with Parents.

Nice place though.

We went to Malta a couple of years ago, and similarly to Christian spent a day in Gozo in the blue lagoon.

I remember it being really small with a huge queue for the one drinks shop

The beach was packed when we were there, but because we went on a boat to get there we were all jumping on and off the boat all day then went swimming ... the fish were 8)

I personally wouldn't go for a week, but Malta and then Gozo for a day would be good :D

Gozo is very nice but not a lot to do, people are friendly and lots of nice peace and quiet, its not very 'with the times' though but if you can cope with that you'll be well away

Malta and Gozo are love them or hate them destinations, personally I love them but have met plenty that hate them  do your research

I went to Malta for my honeymoon (12 years ago!) and took a day trip to Gozo. Gozo was much quieter and cleaner than Malta and the buses on Gozo were straight out of the 1950's.

We stayed in Bugibba in Malta in a hotel that was a cross between Fawlty Towers and something off 'Watchdog' I won't go into details for fear of Omleteers splattering tea, coffee and other beverages over their computer screens

We've been to malta lots of times and love it. It is an aquired taste though the last time we went it had seemed to come full tilt into modern times with noisy teenagers everywhere when previously they all went about with their parents and were respectful. However if you like history it is brilliant the scenery is beautiful and Gozo is wonderful we stayed on Malta and took the ferry over to Gozo several times with the car to the lovely sandy beach (sorry can't remember its name)

If you do go to Malta you must visit the Hypogeum it is awesome. You need a car to see all the sites (the island is only 17 miles long) but there is so much to see if you are a history/culture vulture rather than a body who likes to lie on the beach you will love Malta/Gozo/Comino :D

I've been to Comino, we went about 10 years ago(I was only 10 and can only remember certain parts)

We stayed in the apartments there rather than the hotel but i do remember eating in the hotel. I have visions of my grandma squatting mossies with her daily paper!

I remember going on a small boat from Malta to Comino and i think we did a few days trips off the island when we went as Comino is tiny so not much to do unless you venture to Malta/Gozo.

From the photos it looked really nice anyway. Some friends recently went to Gozo and loved it, the photos looked beautiful. They are not into sunbathing etc and they found plenty to do whilst they were there-sightseeing, scuba diving, exploring the towns etc

We used to absolutely love Gozo though its about 3 years since we were last there.

As others have said there is not a lot to do there (you can drive end to end in 30 minutes) but it depends what you want.

We weren't really into beaches/sitting round the pool, and there is quite a lot to see. The restaurants were all good. The people were always friendly and the weather gorgeous.

We went there about 4 (maybe more) times and loved every minute. I think it was a bit like here (Mayo) but with heat and sunshine instead of wind and rain :D

Personally I would skip the helicopter - had enough of them in the military :vom: . DW loved them at first until I pointed out it has only one engine ... then we took the boat :)

This has really brought many lovely memories to mind for me. I spent 2 weeks on Gozo nearly 20 years ago. I went with my partner it was the only summer holiday we had in 10 years together.

We didn't take the helicoptor from Malta to Gozo, but I definitely would if I was going again.

We booked our own flights and accommodation and stayed in a lovely apartment walking distance from Marsalforn. Produce vans would come daily and honk their horns outside. There was a supermarket and we did cook some meals ourselves. Frankie, who ran the boat trip company with his dad (Peter?) came round one night and cooked Rabbit for us. I think it was a stew, but that memory is a bit hazy. We went on the boat trip 2 or 3 times. I love swimming off a boat and the on board lunch was fantastic. This was the first time I snorkelled and I was amazed at the whole new world below the surface. The bread on Gozo was so delicious, Frankie knew where the best bakery was. A simple tuna salad, fresh bread and local wine. It tasted so good! I remember swimming from Comino to Cominoto. I was a better swimmer those days. We met Frankie's cousin from Wales who intrduced me to Octopus Spaghetti at a fabulous cafe in Marsalforn that I hadn't given a second glance to before. We hired a car and went to Malta for the day, but mostly I remember getting the bus into Victoria and then out again to somewhere on a daytrip. Inevitably we spent time in Victoria between buses. I remember a fort with a fabulous view, the bakeries, a lovely leafy square and the ladies dressed in black making lace outside their houses in the narrow side streets. I remember the beautiful rocks which the sea had carved out (at Xlendi?) I ate a white fish called dot which I've never forgotten and a pasta dish with mushrooms and blue cheese which I've tried to recreate many times. The final memory I will share today is of watching a lightening storm from our balcony.

Happy days.

Cathy, you are far more eloquent than me. You have reminded me how much we enjoyed Gozo.

We too loved the restaurants in Masalforn. We loved just walking along the front and watching the locals promenade on a sunday evening.

Yes the fort that was facinating too with a great view of the harbour.

The ladies making lace most of whom would say hello, and the older men sitting outside their houses chatting to their neigbours across the street who would stop and aknowledge you.

Victoria a buzzy little place.

Loved it. Still wouldn't take the helicopter though :D

Thanks Chucky1! I don't think I've been called eloquent before. it was the first holiday where I kept a diary, I don't know where it is today, but I think the act of writing it down and I must have read it at some stage in the last 20 years probably helped my memory.

If it's the same helicopter I was told it had done service in Vietnam! Ok 20 years later - it's not the same helicopter, the helicopter transfer I just googled is red and shiny!

I went to Malta 30-odd years ago and went on a trip to the Blue Lagoon. I think that was Comino, not Gozo.

I did like parts of Malta. Suggs Bay in the north of the island was a beautiful natural "swimming pool" back then. Can't vouch for how things are these days though.

Have been a few times to gozo, malta and comino.

We stayed in Malta but would get the ferry over to Gozo and stay a night in Gozo - will try and find link for hotel.

I dont think I could spend a week in Gozo unless I just wanted to relax and do nothing apart from eat, sleep and a few walks (actually sounds rather nice!).

Comino was lovely - i think that is where we took a trip in a little boat around the lagoon.

I like malta and have fond memories and would go back one day.
