ED having MRI scan tomorrow - Update

Recommended Posts

Well, we have an appointment for my ED to have her foot scanned using an MRI. She hurt her foot a YEAR ago now :( playing hockey. They think she sprained the plantar tendon in her heel (well, we had many diagnosis back then. Its a sprain rest and walk; ahh it happened a few weeks ago, get some weight on it; oh it might be broken don't put any weight on it . . . . :x ) but basically it seems to have turned into Plantar fasciitis and another complication called RSD (where the nerves say there's a problem and send pain signals. So she is in pain all the time). But we were referred back to orthopaedics where the consultant said really, she's too young (12, almost 13) to have this particular problem so he said about having the MRI to see if there is anything else causing the pain. I don't know why this wasn't suggested earlier  I am almost hoping there is something there they can fix, as frankly the pain relieving methods I've read about for RSD sound horrible. I really hope something can be done soon. She's been walking about in an air cast for months now, not being able to join in with any games, or when her friends run about school, or even a simple shopping trip into town can become a painful nightmare for her. She puts on a brave face, but it has changed her

good luck for tomorrow

I know how hard it is putting on a brave face with a poorly child.

My little boy is 17 months today. He hasn't been right since 7months and has been battling viruses, pneumonia etc. In and out of hospital. We're waiting on a consultants appointment and praying they'll do more tests to try and see if there is something else unseen. He barely eats - sometimes not for days into weeks at a time and is very very underweight...

Lots of hugs and will be thinking of you all

We know what that is like only too well :?

I hope the MRI provides the answer and your daughter is soon on the road to recovery.

Sorry to hear about your son as well S-S

I'm sorry to hear that about your DS, sunshine ((hugs)) Its so hard sometimes. I've got three kids and all of them have had something to make me go grey over. Luckily my DS is about to be signed off by his consultant (he had a perforated eardrum and had to have an op to repair it). Its just the girls now. YD has JIA (Juvenile arthritis) so we are up the hospital at least once a week, on a good week, for her jabs. She's okay at the mo, just hoping she doesn't have a flare up, otherwise it's more than the current predicted two years before she'll be able to come of her meds. I hope the docs find out what's making your DS so poorly  . And I hope they do find something tomorrow for my ED. Trouble is, we have a two week wait to find out anything

Been there Sunshine - lots of bugs and antibiotics and hospital visits. I hope it helps to know my ES is now a strapping 14 yr old 6ft and full of attitude. I am proud when I think what a sicky baby/ toddler he was and although not totally out of the woods yet - they do get there. Even a basic ENT prob can wear them down. Good luck everyone with your poorly offspring and wish them well.

Best wishes for your daughter, Bluekarin. Poor girl :( . (My YS sprained his ankle 2 weeks ago and had the same advice, walk on it. We then got a recall out of the blue for a second opinion in case it was a fracture  . Luckily it wasn't.)

Sunshine, I'm so sorry to hear about your poorly little one :( . What a worry it must be for you :( .

BK, I hope they find an answer with the MRI......DH had one earlier this year, it's amazing what you can see on these scans...........the one piece of advice he came out with was make sure you've been to the loo, apparently the resonance (?) can make a mild wee-need an urgent one very quickly  ..........mind you, he is 58 & on diuretics

SS, I hope you get some answers with your little one's consultation too  , it's so hard when they are too tiny to verbalise their problems/symptoms etc & everything is done by guesswork to a degree, however educated the guessing :anxious:

{{hugs}} to you both and & the littlies,

Sha x

aww thank you all!

Well, she had the scan. Was very nervous as she gets quite claustrophobic, but as it's her foot she didn't need to go right inside it. Took about 30 mins to do so was nice and quick.

Thats the good bit.

Went round to fracture clinic to make an appointment for 2 weeks time and can't get an appointment to see the specialist to speak about the results until 11th MAY!!! In fairness to her consultant his wife is having an op so he isn't available for most of April, and I think quite a few of his patients are being pushed onto other consultants in that department. But still, nearly 2 months before talking about the results before what, if any further treatment can be done is outrageous :x

I phoned our local GP when we got back to see how we can get seen sooner and the receptionist told me to phone them next Wednesday to get the scan results and basically we go from there.

Does anyone know how you can go about being referred to another hospital and do you know if this would result in being seen sooner? I'm looking at our local private hospital as I think they take on NHS patients. Not sure if they treat kids though.

Right, hubby took ED to see the consultant after her recent nerve function test (she had this after the MRI as it showed up some swelling round where her foot hurts and they thought that maybe she had a trapped nerve), to discuss the results. And they are . . . well, they don't know what is wrong! Still!!! He said that its not RSD or plantar fasciitis and that there is no blockage of her nerves.

We now do not know where to go to get something done. She is being referred to the pain clinic which as we see it, will only manage pain, not find out what is actually wrong.

Does anyone know who to go to (or what to do) in order to find out what is wrong with it and get something done? It is 14 months since she first hurt her foot and to still not know what is wrong and what is the best thing to do to make her better.

What a shame that you still have no proper diagnosis - that is so frustrating :(

Perhaps they are hoping that managing the pain properly may be the start of recovery and it may be that it will get better without anyone really knowing what the problem was.

Big hugs to your daughter.

How frustrating for you BK....

I suppose they've checked out the mechanics and it's not just that she is walking differently with all the messing about that's been going on, and something that orthotics might help???? Sorry..silly and obvious suggestion I am sure..it's just that sometimes they don't seem to look at the mundane??? Or is it something that a chiropractor/osteopath could help with (sometimes they are very good..and manage to do what medicine seems incapable of)

Whatever, sending sympathy..it's so difficult when you wait and wait for 10 minutes of the specialist's time only to hear that they are no further forward... been there had the t-shirt.xxxxx

How frustrating for you all. I know you wouldn't be getting to the bottom of the problem but at least they will give your daughter ways of coping with the pain.

I agree with Sadietoo as well, have you tried an osteopath? They would look at the whole body as sometimes you can have pain in your foot which is actually connected to problems in another part of the body. Might be worth a try if you haven't already done it.

I meant to say, I agree with the others......an osteopath/chiropractor/sports physio may be a good direction to try.

When I inured my knee and had the plaster cast off, my leg was stuck straight - ortho consultant just shrugged his shoulders and said they'd wait to see what happened and I'd probably have to have some surgery. I found a sports physio who said it wouldn't bend until the swelling inside the joint went down - it took weeks of remedial massage (ouch!) for it to slowly improve. I still see her every 5-6 weeks - she keeps me mobile!

Sorry to hear about your daughters foot and the poor result you seem to have got from your consultant. I can't understand why they aren't looking at this "swelling" they found on the MRI.

I'm an MRI radiographer at an orthopaedic hospital and if there's a positively identified "swelling" then there's definite pathology. Even if it's fluid in her joint or around a tendon or nerve they should be able to identify her problem.

I don't know your area of the country but I'd get a second opinion if I were you. Your GP can advise you on who'd be able to help. I'd look for either an orthopaedic specialist in feet/ ankles or a paediatric orthopaedic specialist.

If you were closer to me I'd be able to suggest someone.

I hope you can get a diagnosis soon.

Thank you all :) She has a silicone insert for her shoes, but it's not really doing anything as she can't bear any weight on her heel. That and she wears one of the big air cast boot things which you Velcro on and off. She is walking funny, but only because its the only way she can get about anywhere. If she walks a further distance than just to and from school, then she uses crutches. I am worried about further problems from not walking properly ie her back and hips. She has had some physio in the form of exercising in a pool at the hospital which helped for a bit, but doesn't help with the fact she can't bear weight. There are two points on her foot that are incredibly painful (ED thought there was only one but the Dr at the hospital found another one that ED didn't know about and she was still in pain at 10pm last night :( ) We shall see what the GP says.

Moochoo - thank you so much! Would anyone at your work be able to recommend anyone round the Wiltshire/Hampshire/Dorset area? We will definitely be getting a second opinion so better get onto our GP.

Thank you all again :)
