Cinnamon
Some songs I find truly almost to heartbreaking to listen too,& whenever I hear them I just well up ,soppy moo that I am 'Everybody Hurts' by R.E.M is one & 'She' as sung by Elvis Costello is another - the emotion in that mans voice just does it for me. 'Seasons in the Sun' is a total cheese-fest I know, but still makes me sad. 'Moon River' is too beautiful for words, but it HAS to be the Sinatra version The song that really does it for me is 'Stuck in a moment' by U2, which I just loved as a track until I learnt that Bono had written it about the death of his friend Michael Hutchence, who I adored. The words just take my breath away every time I hear it now. Funny how music can affect us like nothing else, isn't it? What songs make you go all unnecessary?
Seagazer
I'm with you Cinnamon on a couple of your choices. Seasons in the Sun has always been a favourite of mine and Stuck in a moment always brings a tear to my eye. I loved Michael Hutchence too and have never really like Bono or U2 (apart from the one that goes wooo hoo ) but the words in that song are so meaningfull. Tears for Fears Mad World came at a time when my life at home with my parents was falling to bits. I love Matt Munro (singing anything really) but especially From Russia With Love and Born Free. Please Release Me by Engleburt Humperdink takes me to Combe Martin in Devon when I was a child. My nan lived there and we would stay with her on holiday. My mum and dad and nan would play cards in the evening while we slept and I can always remember hearing this record being played. It always makes me think of coal tar soap as well as that is what my nan always used.
Space Chick
Phil sobs(and I mean really sobs) whenever he hears Fields of Gold, for me its Crowded House Fall at your Feet. I also cry when I hear Can't get you out of my head by Kylie, as it was the last song my Dad bought before he died, and he loved it and played it constantly, so now when I hear it I think of our last few weeks together. Christian
ANYTHING by Eva Cassidy for me. Especially Fields of Gold. The passion in her voice sets me off. Bright side of the road by Van Morrison. A very upbeat song, but was played at a friend's mothers funeral.

craftyhunnypie
Some funny ones for me I'm afraid... Tomorrow (from the film Annie) - always reminded me of myself. Edelweiss - reminds me of my happy times in Austria. Truly Madly Deeply - Savage garden ( The Untersberg mountain will be my final place of rest for my ashes). Somewhere out there ( from American Tale film) - I always sang it when I was so alone & scared living in Canada. I just called to say I love you - Stevie Wonder ( because I thrive on love, especially from hubby) Even now & one voice - Barry Manilow ( such emotion & build in his songs). Love his music. Oh & a big teary one when it's on when I'm driving after 10pm & late night love affair is on....has to be Hello by Lionel Ritchie. Oh my - that list has made me well up! Ditto I really really miss Michael Nick Cave sang Into My Arms at Michaels funeral and that sets me off too. They played it at the end of an episode of Skins a few weeks ago and I howled solidly for an hour afterwards
Cinnamon
Talking of Skins, the song at the end of ep1 was 'Wild world' by Cat Stevens,& I found that really emotional.

sadietoo
I loved Michael Hutchence too and have never really like Bono or U2 (apart from the one that goes wooo hoo ) but the words in that song are so meaningfull. So sorry to be irreverent here...my daughter had to point out the Wooo hoo song I was thinking of when I read this was by Blur....not the same thing at all... For me, I love leonard Cohen Famous Blue Raincoat, and anything by Tracy Chapman, but the one that brings a tear to my eye everytime is by the Waifs ..Bridal Train...don't know why it just does it to me..also anything sung by children makes me well up..I was useless at school assemblies!!! (when I was a child apparently it was the Skye Boat Song...so much so that I became phobic about it and my parents had to be ready to turn of the telly in an instant..!!! )
Seagazer
The Jam - My English Rose Lesley - had completely forgotten about this song. It isn't played much. OH's friend played on his guitar and sang the song the night he found out his girlfriend had died in a car crash. We were only 19/20 at the time, some of his friends went round to try and comfort him. We all sat there absolutely choked up. I've only heard it a couple of time since in the last 25 odd years but always takes me back to that night. Sadietoo - you're right about the Blur song but there's a song that U2 do and its got a long shouty bit, I think its from a film or something. I'll have to ask the kiddies what it is, I think YS really liked it at the time.
Cinnamon
That'll be 'Elevation' by U2, as featured in the first Tomb Raider movie,I think.
Chickendoodle
Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce - I can remember listening to radio Luxembourg on the night he died in a plane crash and they played this song Autumn Leaves - Nat King Cole and only Nat King Cole - no-one else will do. This was played at my Dad's funeral The song by The Streets where is losing his girlfriend and it has the line "Dry your eyes mate". It gets me every time (sorry, don't know the title) Almost anything on the soundtrack of Sleepless in Seattle !
C&T
Seasons in the Sun has always been a favourite of mine ( Everytime for me! Always reminds me of my Aunt, I guess I first heard it after she had just died. Can't listen to it at all now - if it comes on the radio I have to switch off/turnover!
