When things are moved

Recommended Posts

OH & I, with little one in toe, went away for the weekend and my parents came to stay to look after our dog Poppy and the chooks. :D

When we got back the glasses, which are usually the right way round, are now upside down in the cupboard, the knives, forks & spoons have all changed place in the drawers, the ironing board is now in the garage and not under the stairs and the contents of the fridge have been rearranged!

I love my parents to bits but it drives me mad spending time putting everything back where it belongs whenever we return from time away (even it its just a couple of hours!)

Is it just me but when you have family stay over do they try and morph your house into theirs?!!

I've never had anyone stay at my house either  my sister lives less than a minutes walk away so I'm covered if I go on holiday 8) Although my DH and children are the same as ANH's - I threaten them that they'll have to do it more often to make sure they remember where they go :lol:

The cutlery thing is a widespread one. OH and I used to constantly turn the cutlery the other way round! I wonder if it's a man vs woman thing too. He straw polled his office and loads of people were doing it inter-familiarly or in couples. I like the handle ends to point left, he likes the handle ends to point right. It's all so nuts.

My OH took early retirement and so does all of the housework (I still work). I know I know I shouldn't complain. When he does the bedroom he always moves my handcream and face cleanser neatly out of the way and puts them behind my jewellery box. I use them twice a day and it really irritates me - little things eh?

He will also rearrange anything I put in the dishwasher (or supermarket trolley)

Saying that though, he is very good at packing so I expect I have the neatest trolley in the supermarket

My sister has this problem with my mother. She once came back to find not only her airing cupboard had been completely rearranged but also her bedroom furniture! The fridge and kitchen cupboards have also been done before now. My sister is waiting for her to actually move the house to another location :D

My mother has never tried this with me but then I have a reputation for being a tad blunt...

Oh yes. Especially when we moved and they came to help on moving day and started unpacking stuff into the WRONG PLACE. Without asking. OR when MIL looked after Mog for a day and decided to cook a roast dinner. One, I don't eat a big dinner in the evening. Two, OH was away, so I wasn't going to eat an entire roast chicken by myself. Three, don't use every pan, dish and surface in the kitchen without washing ANY of it up or even putting it in the dishwasher. Every time I get a relative to look after Imogen, the entire house needs cleaning afterwards. Thank heavens for the new childminder who doesn't expect me to want to clean the whole house and wash up for two hours after I get home from work.

Mog is in Hong Kong with OH this week and her nanny there cleans while the baby naps. I want OH to bring her home with him.

"Ooops, word censored!"ody dares move anything here  - I'm a little bit OCD about placement of things........

My son looks after the farm if we go away (he doesn't live here) - when we get back everything will be in the same place as I left them.

I came home from work today to find every kitchen cupboard had been totally rearranged  I couldn't be more happy as my lovely DD2 has throughly cleaned out every cupboard. (And thrown away a mountains of out of date food  ) It looks beautiful - I keep popping into the kitchen and opening the cupboard doors just to see it again.

How can you be happy? 1.gif My son went through cupboard and threw away all my out of date things. Well sorry but 10yr old mixed herbs are still mixed herbs and so what if vanilla essence should have been used by 2004. I miss my out of date products!!

My OH is looking forward to retirement when he says he's going to reorganise all the kitchen cupboards. Help!! Where are the Kalms?

I love it when my mum comes to stay! :D

She efficiently moves the washing from the dirty basket, into the washing machine, onto the line, irons it and then puts it away in the correct place normally too! :P:dance:

If I know she is coming to stay I don`t do washing for a week or so running up to it...wouldn`t want her to get bored! :anxious:

Thats my MIL! If we go away, I come back to a spotless house, bedding all changed, all washing, ironing completed. She moves all the furniture to clean behind it (she is tiny, and not that young - does worry me a bit!!). If we have switched the hot water off, she takes everything home with her to wash and bring back. She will even replace towels that she thinks have seen better days (they were only 12 month old... :anxious: ) plus all sorts of other things.

She is a one woman dynamo, and enjoys it! My mum thinks it's hilarious... We were brought up to quite definitely defend for ourselves!

Well knock me down with a feather. I had no idea.:wink:

OH always restacks the dish washer after me.

Nothing in the house gets moved by Parents as they never stay  I have a place for everything - usually in a pile. OH is always losing car keys, phone, wallet etc but I know where to look. He knows where kitchen stuff goes, but I seem to forever be moving things back to where they belong.

Don't get me started on him making the bed

I think that what a lot of you are talking about is people not deliberately moving things, but not knowing where they go, my brother does that at my parents house mainly in the kitchen.

Whereas I'm ashamed to admit that I am a mover  When I clean my daughters house I rearrange things, usually to what I think is a more attractive/functional position, but only bits and pieces not the furniture. I was at their house when they moved in and helped them to decide ( yeah ok, I decided ) what to use each kitchen cupboard for! I don't mean to take over but I just want to make things as easy as possible for her and my son in law, plus I have 27 years experience of running a home so I do know what works and what doesn't, I blame my Mum she was a control freak too
