Hung parliament

Recommended Posts

Everything is looking pretty positive this morning, let's hope it can last and move the country forward.

One thing I will say is that we do seem to have a lot of youthful, energetic people in government now, they may be lacking in ministerial experience but hopefully they will have some fresh and workable ideas.

I am hoping that having both parties debating and voting on decisions means that we may end up with more balanced and carefully thought policies and actions. We shall see..... :?

I feel exactly the same. I fed up ofpeople not even giving them a chance. I didn't vote labour last time but I seem to have given them more of a chance than half the people I know who did, I only judged once they had done something. If I started a job and people were already judging me on my past and my schools (which I didnt choose my parents did) I think I would be mightily peeved.

I really hope that the lib dems can temper the tories and we get the best bits from both parties. It could be really good. I will wait and see

I quite like the idea of whats happened, they're both keen, youngish men, it will be interesting to see how it all pans out. I feel quite hopeful, I hope it doesn't go belly up. :D

Less likely to go belly up as they've a coalition and a fixed term paliament. Lib dems would have little interest in calling for an election while they're in a coalition, Tories can't call an election by having accepted a fixed term. Labour could try to sabotage it but would they? The biggest danger is probably people having unrealistic expectations and whinging about them, given the state of the economy and the deficit whoever got in was going to have to make cuts.

I think it's a great idea. Two parties that are so different, working together. It's such a different situation that i don't think anyone can turn around and say it won't last. Let's give it a good chance, the joint press conference they gave gave me hope for the future.

I give the coalition 18 months - 2 years before it goes belly up.

I wonder how people who voted Lib-Dem, to keep the Tories out feel now.............

Someone commented on a radio phone-in today that the coalition was like "a unhappily married couple, staying together, just for the sake of the children. It usually ends in tears".

Also quite scarry, it's the first time I've ever been older than a Prime Minister !!!

Well I'm very disappointed. GB didn't cling to the door at number 10,then dragged away leaving scratch marks like Tom and Jerry. The little boys were cute - and at least they weren't paraded around like Blair's.

Now if you want a really slimey character with scarey eyes - Ed Balls! Ed Milliband is OK, don't like David. Not too keen on Osborne either. As for Hain (the twit that dug up Lords, how dare that South African do that - yah beat your lot) and Mandelson - ugh!

I'm feeling strangely upbeat and hopeful about it all. I wonder if it's shellshock?

There is a serious worry about the choice of energy secretary. The Libdems are antinuclear and this morning there has already been much talk of 800 redundancies at Sellafield (this doesn't include the 1000 or so contract workers who never appear in any employment stats). A dismal time awaits the west coast of Cumbria I'm afraid.

There are people in all parties who give me the creeps a bit. Osborne is one of them. Teresa May is another. Somehow I can't see the country going with a Mr Balls for Prime Minister in the future. I agree about the Miliband Brothers - Ed is OK, David a bit creepy.

I like Harriet Harman but she isn't going to stand - I have done some work with/for her in the past in Birmingham, so know her a bit too (she probably won't remember me).

Re nuclear: The Lib Dems are anti nuclear, but Con and Labour are pro and therefore the Lib Dems have an opt-out of voting with the Cons over nuclear. The Tories will get enough Labour votes or at least abstentions to carry any nuclear power renewal proposal.

I like the choice of William Hague for Foreign Secretary, I think foreign statesmen will find him bit of a handful. I like the Nick Clegg/David Cameron combo, sorry we won't see much of Oliver Letwin, he reminds me of a camel. I hadn't taken much notice of Theresa May before, hope she does better than Jacquie Smith. I didn't notice many women's names, not that that bothers me greatly. Just an observation.

Now we've a coalition what is their energy policy. Lib dems had a rather wishful thinking policy of aiming for zero carbon and no nuclear power stations.

One of my reasons for voting Conservative is because they are pro-nuclear power so I'm glad to hear that their stance hasn't changed and that the Lib Dems do not have to support it or could stand in the way of progress in that direction.

I think George Osbourne will do a brilliant job, it's not going to be easy but he looks as if he's ready to attack the economy with a terrier like attitude

Ah, I should pay more attention

That's good :D

Keeping Trident is good for us up here too as so many jobs in Barrow depend on it.

The Libdems would have made an economic wasteland of Cumbria otherwise.

We are all going to have to make sacrifices and there will be many groups pleading for their share. It's going to be a tough time for some years.

On a lighter note, I must admit it's going to be mighty strange seeing Nick Clegg deputise for David Cameron at PM's question time.

I really wish we weren't keeping Trident. How can we deny other countries who we don't like having nuclear power when we are renewing a nuclear weapon that we would never use!!!

You will not remove our nuclear deterrent capability by cancelling Trident.

We would just have to buy from somebody else.

As for denying other countries ..... well, one would have to make up ones mind whether such nuclear weapons were intended as offensive or defensive weapons. Simplistic, I know and who makes the judgement?
