chickencam
Our stove installation was about £2,000 which included having an old fireplace taken out and the chimney lined. The best investment ever. We have had it lit over the weekend, but it did get a bit warm when my Grandad came over yesterday.
Charlottechicken
Just downloaded the latest energy bill, I've used £8.37 worth of gas for the past 3 months That's a couple of hours running the central heating to check it worked OK and my hot water for the quarter. It won't be that low when the next bill comes on 18th December. Clare, I have that sort of solid fuel for the open fire, there's literally nothing but ash left when it burns, and I can often start a new fire the following day from the red coals left, as long as the ash surrounding the coals isn't disturbed until you need to. Cinnamon
OK, quick woodburner question for you all. Just had a bit of a spring clean (yep,I know its a bit late!), & the Woodburner is not looking its best. Can I sort of re blacken it with something? ali-s
Bathroom storage heater switched back on this morning so that room will be getting warm tomorrow Debating whether or not to switch on the Kitchen storage heater as it is chilly in there this morning or to start lighting the coal fire in there. The kitchen chimney has been swept ready for having a wood burner installed. If we start using the fire now the chimney will have to swept again before the wood burner goes in. We have a lot of coal to use up which we can't burn in the wood burner, not sure what to do
Valkyrie
It's been too warm to have the heating on just lately - especially at night.
abwsco
Well, I've now to say the heating is on as I've brought my Dad to live with us and had to put it on in a couple of rooms for him. I'm feeling ill with it
Charlottechicken
I'm still holding out till October! Mind you, it's dropped to 14c here today and a strong wind from the North , Brrrrr!
The Dogmother
Same here, the Front Office Fairies have the heating on here at work, so I'm in a short sleeved shirt, but I went home for lunch and put a big cardi on. I shall have the stove lit tonight.
Aunty e
We haven't had it on yet - although wanted to in the bathroom last night as idiot OH left the window open! BRRRRR. Probably will light the fire tonight, but still having fireguard issues. Our current one is very flimsy and was only bought to keep the kittens away from the fire, not the baby. Now she is sturdy and nearly walking, we need something hardcore, yet attractive. Any suggestions?
The Dogmother
I had one of those big square/rectangular ones that hooked to the wall, can't remember the name. It looked like this one...
Aunty e
It does look like it's either that or the babydan hearthgate. While I like the look of the babydan one, it would take up far too much space now we've moved our sofa to be by the fire, so I think it's a quick trip to Mothercare tomorrow to pick up one like your picture. As an added bonus, it should stop her eating the kindling too.

Purplemaniacs
I had one of those big square/rectangular ones that hooked to the wall, can't remember the name. It looked like this one... We had one like that when DD and DS were little, I think it is one time that you have to sacrifice beauty for safety. As a child I fell on a fire with a flimspy guard that gave way, luckily someone pulled me off very quickly. I think I will have to get another as GD is now walking or we wont have a fire when she is here. Chrissie
Charlottechicken
I'm still holding out till October! Mind you, it's dropped to 14c here today and a strong wind from the North , Brrrrr! 14 is tropical - 8 degrees here brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Compared to you up there we are all soft southerners Today is 6 degrees outside in the shade, but it is lovely and sunny, so I am hoping for solar gain in the kitchen, which feels cold at 14c, then I won't have to put the heat on Only a few more days till October, then I'll see how much longer I can last without heat. Funny but any previous year the heat would've been on ages ago. Now I'm finding that I'm used to it and I haven't even been tempted to put the electric blanket on either! Egluntyne
7 degrees here. If we keep moving, and wear jumpers, we'll be able to hold out till Oct 1st.
Cinnamon
Probably bunging mine on today as I am totally fed up with dripping washing & soggy cold bath towels Life is too short to spend it uncomfortable.
Mollie333
Nope, heat hasn't come on yet. still looking at getting a slanket though Currently wrapped up in my Slanket!
meezers
I was hoping to hold out until october, but I was so cold last night I couldn't get to sleep.Heating is now on, but the thermostat is set low, will stay on now until spring - I don't bother with timers, just turn the thermostat down before bed and when we go out. I would have lit the woodburner, but we aren't having the chimney swwept until oct 1st ( optimistic that we would be able to hold out that long ! ). Olly
Last night felt properly cold for the first time, not just a bit cool but 'can't get to sleep' cold. The electric blanket is going back on the bed today!
