Redwing Posted January 18, 2011 Author Share Posted January 18, 2011 Tasha - congratulations; its incredibly well deserved Its been really inspiring to follow your journey from rescuing a garden centre cockeral Oh Tasha do tell us newer members how you started and what breeds you have kept on your journey - please. Also wondered what that story is, sounds interesting! oh go on then... I'll try to be concise I was relocated by my company in October 2008 from inner city Bristol. I actually bought an Eglu before we moved and it shared the living room of our 10ft wide terrace house with us till we moved Within a week of moving I had bought three hybrids, another followed then two pekins 'rescued' from a dodgy auction then lots and lots of other chooks and hatching eggs, I've probably owned well over 15 different breeds in two short years! Cookiemonster was responsible for me buying my first barred dotte Tarzan in August 2009, he was in a garden/poultry centre reject pen looking for a new home, he was sat sweetly in the doorway of the coop watching the world go by while his pen mates paced the pen. CM coaxed me in to taking him home as she felt sorry for him and of the three of us (Falkor was there too) I had the neighbours least likely to complain This is him when he first arrived: He was gangly and his crow sounded like a quack - it wasnt a promising start I entered him in to my local show a couple of months later and he won his class and I was hooked from there! Tarzan turned in to this and went on to win a lot more prizes last season I decided to take things more seriously and bought barred dottes from some of the country's top breeders to produce my own bred birds last year. Tarzan is the father of my two winning cockerels Jack and Greystoke One top poultry judge recently said to me laughingly that buying from so many different places should be a recipe for disaster when trying to breed a show bird every time I see him he shakes his head and laughs I'd thoroughly recommend anyone with a decent pure breed to have a go at your local show, they need the support and welcome new competitors and the wealth of knowledge and experience open to you is great. The social side of a poultry club is lovely too with most people celebrating successes together - you dont need a pure breed to join a poultry club though, backyard keepers are welcome Tarzan has been shown a few times this year and won best cock bird at the Federation show (a cock is a male bird older than a year, a cockerel is a younger one) and was also part of my champion fowl trio at the Welsh National last weekend. He is a great character and the only chook that I trust to wander the house with the dog about, he also likes a bit of TV watched from the sofa arm and he can also be trusted to dry himself after a bath too: If someone told me a year ago that I'd spend my evenings scrutinising show schedules, examining individual feathers, super-imposing pics of winning wyandottes over mine to compare them, agonising over markings and bent feathers and scrubbing chook legs I would have laughed them out of the room but oddly its a world that suits me I've recently decided to try my hand at a second colour of Wyandotte and have acquired some chocolate bantams, Snickers the cockerel joins my beautiful barred dotte boys in the mad house and the journey continues Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
