Chortle Chook
Reading through some of the posts on here it seems that there are several different breeds of hen who produce or I want everything . . . lovely coloured eggs for my skelter and a nice friendly pet chicken who is not too big to go with my Silkies and Frizzles and one who is pretty too. Any ideas?
sari
I have a cream legbar, who has laid one pastel green egg so far, she's not very cuddly but will take treats from hand. She's not aggressive at all, and can fly pretty well!!

alet_chicken
Another vote for cream crested legbars. I have two who lay blue eggs, one is really confident and friendly, the other is very scatty. They are about the same size at the shoulder as my ex-batts, if that makes any sense. Be warned that (I think) there is a small percentage of legbars that lay cream eggs.
Chortle Chook
My aracaunas lay lovely blue eggs What are their personalities like? I like the look of Cream Legbars and they sound rather gentle. Would an Aracauna make a good pet for FR in a 20m garden?
The Dogmother
My aracaunas lay lovely blue eggs Mine too, mad as hatters but great eggs.
Cinnamon
I have a Cream Legbar who lays gorgeous blue eggs & a Skyline, which is a hybrid Legbar, who lays green,& lays them all year round.
chestnutmare
My columbine lays green eggs. She's lovely - happy to be in the run when she can't be put out to FR, hand feeds, will come close to you. But it can be tricky picking her up to check her over - she is fast and makes a run for it so is a bit mad in some ways. She's a decent layer, laying 5 eggs a week. Cinnamon
Just so you know CC,Skylines,Columbines & the other one whose name I forget, all are basically the same hybrid hen, just with different names as they come from different suppliers. rufusrooster
Had my columbine, Sandy for 18 months now, she's shut down completely for the winter now egg wise, laid bluey/green eggs at first but theyve slowly faded and now are virtually white, does anyone think they might be blue again when she starts laying again this year Edited February 2, 2011 by Guest
gongladosh
As well as full-size hens laying coloured eggs, does anyone know of bantams that do the same? If not, can anyone think of a reason that such bantams don't exist?
The Dogmother
I have two miniature (bantam) araucanas which lay turquoise eggs

Space Chick
My cream legbar is very affectionate and lays stunning blue eggs, I also have 2 columbines that lay green, they are flightier and aren't as affectionate. I have pekins and a silkie cross in my flock and they all get on well together despite the size differences
Purplemaniacs
Had Lizzie for 18 months now, she's shut down completely for the winter now egg wise, laid bluey/green eggs at first but theyve slowly faded and now are virtually white, does anyone think they might be blue again when she starts laying again this year Latte used to lay nice dark brown eggs, these faded to a very pale brown. Then she had a break from laying and they are now a lovely dark brown again, a lovely contrast to my white eggs. My two hybrids that lay blue and blue/green eggs have stopped laying over the winter I hope they start soon. Chrissie

Chrissie what breed is Latte ? funnily enough ive started a thread on the "eggs" section regarding dark brown Marans eggs. they laty there darkest coloured eggs when they 1st start to lay, maybee the 1st dozen or 2 dozen eggs, then they fade. the early eggs take longer to work through and so get more pigment on them. grracee
I'd definately have to say the cream legbar, my girl was fab for laying perfect blue eggs. She would lay me one everyday, she used to be abit flighty to start with but she used to love her strokes and cuddles. A real sweetie. sparkysmum
Pom our araucana lays the most beautiful blue eggs. She is a very lovely hen. However she is a bit of a bully . She was always bottom of the pecking order (and therefore no trouble) until we got our sablepoots. She really doesn't like sharing her patch with younger birds. Unusually for an araucana she was also quite broody last year so overall we didn't get too many eggs. I don't know if this is typical of the breed. Hope this helps, Alli xx

gongladosh
I think I'll have to get a bantam araucana or two! Since I found little Houdini, my Light Sussex bantam chicken of fate, I've discovered how lovely bantams are. Where can I buy bantam araucanas? Chortle Chook
I have quite a list of breeds I'd like but my OH has said 'no, no, NO' until I mentioned that some chickens lay blue eggs. Now he's saying 'Do we have to wait till the Reading show?'
