Chucky Mama
I am quite superstitious about umbrellas being put up indoors but I don't think that I have any other superstitions. My daughter has to say 'Hello Mr Magpie and how are you today' everytime she sees a lone magpie. Do you have any superstitions?
beach chick
definitely agree about umbrellas indoors! and I also say "hello Mr Magpie how's your wife" when I see a single one. and I wouldnt walk under a ladder.... but I think black cats are lucky; and we have had peacock feathers indoors because we were given them by a Russian lady - they are lucky in Russia. sadietoo
I think my Mum was one of the most superstitious people I have ever known, and so I've always had to fight superstitions...however, not entirely successfully...I,too, salute Magpies, and I also touch wood, and won't cut my toenails on a Friday or a Sunday, and (none of my family are allowed to either!)...apart from that I'm entirely rational I think...(although not keen on the colour green tbh! )
Olly
No - not at all. I do however always say 'Good morning, your Lordship - how's her Ladyship?' when I see a magpie, because my mum taught me to!
The Dogmother
Hmm, I never thought that I was superstitious, but now you've got me thinking as I do all those things
Goldstar
and won't cut my toenails on a Friday or a Sunday, and (none of my family are allowed to either!)... Why cant you cut toe nails on these days? I always salute magpies (doesnt matter how many, just incase) and say morning or afternoon Mr magpie, I dont have umbrellas up in the house, and I dont walk under ladders. percy049
the number 13 (especially friday 13th!) is very unlucky.... so imagine my face when I saw that I had an exam on the 13th. Also, I try not to go under ladders, but if i do, i cross my fingers. my name doesn't allow any green things in her house expect plants! percy049
but my hamster and one of my chickens died on the 13th, and thats UNlucky
Christian
I always say hello to a magpie. It's the law. Don't like crossing on the stairs. I light a candle on the Summer and WInter solstice. Leave some coal, bread and a match by the front door on New Years Eve, so I will have warmth, and food for teh coming year. Wouldn't say I was superstitious
bigmommasally
Not putting new shoes on the table is another one - no idea why though. Also my friend insists on leaving by the same door that she came in - I've no idea what thats all about either
Goosey Lucy
Not putting new shoes on the table is another one - no idea why though. I think that comes from laying out the dead at home and dressing them in their Sunday best - but I'm ready to be corrected

Sam
Haven't heard of half of these things! Not superstitious at all! I wouldn't say hi to a magpie because they sit on my shed and make the loudest noise they can, the other day there was 6 of them on there
craftyhunnypie
I salute magpies, I won't walk under ladders, black cats are lucky, I have worry dolls that I truly believe in, I touch wood, I throw salt over left shoulder when I use it in cooking, I have a lucky fork for beating up cake mixture ( when not using the Kenwood), I often put my pyjama bottoms on the wrong way round & leave them like that incase of bad luck, any ring put on the wedding finger should be turned 3 times, itchy right hand - money or good luck, pick up a penny for luck, give a plastic pig at new year for good luck. I have lucky charms too. Superstitious me - nah! Emma.x
Christian
Oooh, forgot the shoes on the table. Don't do that either. Em, is the plastic pig a German thing? A Glueckschwein?
ali-s
I am very superstitious and do all the things suggested. If I drop a knife someone else has to pick it up. No laundry washed on New years Eve because any good luck for the coming year will get thrown out with the laundry water.
Egluntyne
Not superstitious particularly, although I do salute magpies and don't walk under ladders, but the latter is mainly to avoid falling objects. However, I am a great believer in Karma.
snowberry
I don't walk under ladders because I don't want to get squished by something; shoes on tables are just plain dirty, crossing on the stairs could be dangerous; I think most superstitions are based on common sense. I can't explain magpies into that though! My son was born on the 13th so it's good! I believe in Italy that white cats are bad luck, so why would it be the opposite here? What I can't stand is all those superstitious text messages that I get...pass this on to 10 friends for luck or you'll get hit by a truck ballony.... *breath*
Alis girls
I say hello to magpies but say" one for sorrow.." etc - I touch wood (my head!) and throw salt over my left shoulder if spilt to get the devil in the eye. I dont allow any shoes on the tables most unhygenic and threw a hissy fit when ES left muddy trainers on there to show me he needed new laces I can see I have eyes I told him. My mum who was religious and superstitious ( the 2 are contradictory) when she knew she had terminal cancer got very upset when she saw magpies. I think she saw it as a doom thing. My grandad also very religious wouldnt have 13 round the table. Superstiton and religion are seen as contradicting each other - didnt seen to stop my family though I found mum burying a mirror in the ggarden once - it stops 7 yrs bad luck. So now you know why I'm so barking - is there a smilie for totally barmy?
chickencam
I had not heard of the magpie greeting until a couple of months ago, but I do tend to look for another one quickly if I see only one. I also don't cut my nails on Fridays or Sundays, I haven't done since my teens when I heard that it was bad luck. Other than that I do tend to try to avoid slipping into being superstitious. My YD is terrible at the moment she gets really upset if someone tries to walk past her on the stairs and is always looking for particular things that are lucky, I don't know where she gets it from, because I haven't even told my children about my nail cutting habits
Lavenders_Blue
I say 'Hello Mr Magpie' but then I also say 'Hello Mr Blackbird', 'Hello Mr Sparrow','Hello Mr Robin' etc when I see a bird. So not superstitious, just slightly potty
Cinnamon
Well,I thought that I wasn't superstitious until I actually listed the things I do I try not to walk on cracks in the pavement. I do not walk under ladders. I always say hello to Magpies & wish them a good day. I touch wood. I never put new shoes on the table. But I see black cats as lucky, for some reason,& also think that you lot not cutting your toenails on certain days are nutters
Chucky Mama
Oooh, forgot the shoes on the table. Don't do that either. I forgot that one too I do do a fair bit of 'touching wood' too
craftyhunnypie
Em, is the plastic pig a German thing? A Glueckschwein? Yep! Ever since I lived over there & was given a pig wearing a top hat & holding a clover leaf ( at new year), it has kind of stuck!
