dangerous behaviour on motorway

Recommended Posts

We were on the M25 yesterday, just a few hundred yards from the fatal crash involving an HGV. All traffic was stuck, we were there for 2 hours until a system was organized which allowed us to exit from an entry sliproad. During those two hours I saw so much stupid behaviour. The opposite carriageway was stopped at the scene of the accident and so people poured out of their cars to use it as a playground. I even saw a little boy of about 6 cycling around. People were playing tennis, strolling down to gawp at the accident or play catch. I was amazed, at any moment that stretch of road could have been used by emergency vehicles or traffic might have trickled through.

On the side with the stopped vehicles I saw a mother let her toddler run in & out of the cars & lorries & then she scowled when she had to scoop her child out of the way of a motorbike. Of course when we were able to move people started running back to their cars getting in the way of manoeuvring Lorries, vans & other cars. I realise children needed to get out of cars, it was so hot, but it should have been done more safely & intelligently.

It beggers belief, it really does!

At work the other day, I could hardly look as a stupid dad (well, he was!) let his 2 year old(ish) boy stand upright in one of those 3 wheeler pushchairs as the day swung it around in circles. Inevitably the child was flung out eventually, narrowly missing a display of wine glasses  Naturally I would have got into trouble for asking him to stop earlier...

I also read the Footballers from AFC Bournemouth had been able to leave their coach, do some stretches and play "keepie-uppie" on the hard shoulder. Dread to think what would've happened if the shoulder was to be needed then!

My friend at work is best friends with the two people in the micra the lorry hit after it crossed the central reservation on friday. Both are alive but the girl may loose her leg and her brother has multiple fractures to every limb, is in a coma and has had surgery to remove his spleen. It's just awful and sends shivers down me when i think how life can be turned upside down like that, so suddenly.

The neglect people generally show for their children's safety never fails to amaze me.... Even on ordinary pavements I never fail to be amazed by the parents who are either some way behind or ahead of their toddlers alongside busy roads (surely you need to keep them within arm's reach at all times to avoid any problems?).. I always insisted that I walked between my children and the road, so that they couldn't get in to trouble without going past me first. I find I have to restrain myself from rugby tackling small children who look like they are about to launch themselves into the road at any moment!!

I grabbed hold of a child as he was about to run out into the road. He was with a large group of relatives who neither noticed him or said thank you.

WHY don't parents teach their children road sense? Or use reins for the little ones? Mine will be shackled to me until I can trust them to behave sensibly.

Apparently they won't bring back the 'Tufty club' adverts because they are too traumatic for children. Sorry but getting run over is FAR worse.

I bet you most kids couldn't tell you what the 'Green Cross Code' is nowadays ether.

My four-year-old could - but that's because it put the fear of god into me as a child, and both husband and I have drummed it into him.

He's also not allowed to walk down the main road without holding hands, has to keep next to us on the side roads, and under no circumstances is he allowed to cross a road without one of us hanging onto him.

Kids near us have an utter lack of road sense - I very nearly run one over most mornings in term time, because they saunter up the middle of the road, cross without looking, or walk out in front of cars :wall: It's not as if I drive quickly on the roads around home - they're very narrow terraced streets with parked cars up both sides - given that I drive quite a big car, I can't go very fast for fear of hitting someone else's vehicle

The other thing that petrifies me is parents who just shove buggies out into the middle of the road, not even near crossings, to stop traffic so they can cross

I hope your colleague's friends make a speedy (as possible in the circumstances) recovery
