A level results & going to Uni

Recommended Posts

I am on tenterhooks today,as it is the A level results day tomorrow & we finally find out if my eldest daughter will be going to Uni or not.

Her firm & insurance choices (Surrey & Kent) require the same grades from her (AAB in English,Classics & Psychology),so she is either going or not really............

We are going to look at clearing at midnight tonight,as she thinks her Classics exam has let her down,& she won't get a place in this highly competitive year :?

Who knows, she may find a place doing English in Reading,& could still live at home :P

She has gone to work today to do a few hours overtime, just to get her mind off it all, although most of her colleagues are in the same boat,so I can well imagine the top topics of conversation there today!

Is anyone else hanging out for tomorrow?

Can't believe it was me last year, seems like so long ago!

I was waiting for results but knew I was going to Aber so bit less stressy :D

Few friends are getting results from retakes and my brother gets his AS results.

Good luck to her + everyone else :D

Last year that was us....youngest child missed his AAB offer & we had a horrible day negotiating clearing but in the end all was well & he's doing the subject he wanted at a uni that suits him down to teh ground. Suspect it worked better than if he'd got into St Andrew's (certainly makes for an easier journey at beginning & end of term)

I do hope all goes well for your daughter...but if she DOES have to explore Clearing, can I just say that the universities that last year asked you to fill in your details online to go thro the process still gave priority to those who phoned - so DONT WASTE TIME with online forms. J lost a place at Manchester that way - & while he's fine, it just added to the general feeling of panic as results day wore on.

Lots of luck & prayers for all those waiting to hear tomorrow

Cinnamon, Clearing isnt available until 8am tomrorow morning... there is a note on the UCAS website. We were going to do that too but will have to wait- hope it can cope with everyone logging on at 8am and doesnt crash!!!!!

Ah,ok...they sent an email this morning saying to log on at 12.01am though

It is never made easy,is it?

Thanks GIP, I will bear that in mind 8)

She doesn't want to go too far away ,so that limits her options a bit (she wants to be able to come home at weekends & keep her job),but should she not get in then she may also go back to college & fast track Philosophy for a year, then do an Open University course, all while keeping her job on.

SO MUCH to think about!:lol:

Ok, this is what I got from UCAS Today.

I guess that Clearing isn't viable until they actually know their results,& goes live at 8am,but prior to that you can view which Uni has which course online???

The Clearing process explained

The list of Clearing vacancies will be available on the UCAS website from 00:01 on 18 August. If they need to use Clearing, your son or daughter should find courses they're interested in on this list, and then contact the universities and colleges to discuss whether they are able to offer them a place.

Yes, the universities know which pupils have got a place days before the students, so they are able to allocate their clearing places in advance and are ready for the influx of students looking for places once the results are live on UCAS. It gives you a head start - if you spend a few hours this evening 'formulating' a back up plan, then as soon as you see the results in the morning you can call the respective uni to apply, before most others.

I'm waiting...It helped the fact I had to have an eyetest this morning and needed new glasses-that took my mind off it for a bit, as I did work exp there and know them all really well.

I have to say I am more than a little bit terrified tomorrow. I have to get AAB to go to Birmingham to do Biology with Industrial Placement, (If I get ABB, they'll still take me, but just on the normal BSc instead). Reading is backup, BBC.

Also, Cinnamon, don't count on Cleo getting into Reading through Clearing though, I read in the paper a few days ago that I don't think they are going into Clearing this year, as they are expecting to be full.

Am really scared.....

Fingers crossed for everyone waiting to hear

Sarah I understand Cleo wanting to be close to home but if she can do it living with other students during the week is an important part of what they get from uni. the ideal would be close enough to pop home when she needs to.

So far my worst has been waiting for the grammar school entrance results. I'm dreading next year as ES will be taking his GCSEs. I can't imagine what state I'll be in by the time we're waiting for his a-level results to see which uni he gets into :lol:

Oh, I hear you loud and clear. Went through it three times (lucky the first two times). It was especially horrible waiting for DS's 11+ results as the choices for boys here are rubbish. ED is going into yr 10 in September, so GCSE years (already done one) so in two years, nails will be down to the quick again :cry:

Good luck to all of you waiting. Hope you get the results and the places you want

I found out I'd got my place at brum before I found out my results - I then found out I hadn't got the AAB I needed to get in, I'd got ABD (I was ill throughout most of my second year and had a lot of time off so my french grade really suffered from a borderline B/A in first year to a U in second year). I got accepted based on points, I got 380 (3 A2s and 2 AS). Which was 20 more than their grade requirements would have made.

Although, I guess, this may not necessarily work for other people this year.

Totally agree, but she (it is Devon not Cleo - I have all this agin in 2 years  ) wants to keep her job as firstly she will be earning a bit,she can work full time (ish) in the holidays, she won't miss out on her bonus, which will be substantial as she has done a lot of overtime,& she will still get her partner discount.

If she does go to reading,& that is a BIG if,as Liz says, they may be full, then we would hope she had student digs for at least the first year.

Surrey will be great,as she will be boarding there during the week & coming home for one night at the weekends (plus she will get one good meal a week, but I am NOT doing her washing)

She is very attached to home & I think she really needs to go to Uni to move on. She is a bit too comfortable here.....

Anyhow,we shall see tomorrow morning.

That has reassured me a bit. DD wants to go to Salford to do German and Italian as its the only place in the country that does translation and interpreting. She needs BBB (300 points) but already has an AS in maths and another in critical thinking so thats extra points, together with a grade 8 distinction in her flute exam which was too late to put on her UCAS form. Her plan B is to phone Salford and convince them they should take her whatever :anxious: I hope they do take these other things into account. Plus, they struggle to find language students so hopefully this will play in her favour. The waiting is the worst part though
