Bringing chickens indoors....

Recommended Posts

In view of the possible bad weather we might be experiencing in the next day or so, I suggested to OH, we take our 6 chickens out of their cube (well it might get blown away???) and put the girls in the utility room. The answer was NO  . Well I mean, I don't want them to blow away. I could of course put OH in the utility room  and pop the girls in bed, then it would be nice and toasty :lol::lol:

Has anyone else got contingency plans?

With you on this one - ours didn't seem the slightest bit phased during the last two bad winters. Once they all pile up in the house at night they're all toasty. They'll do similar in a sheltered corner of the run during the day too if it gets cold enough - the key is not to let them get cold and wet at the same time.

Think I will go for putting OH in run, the chickens can have the cube, they will be snug there. OH can be fed pellets and if he is good, some corn or porridge. The girls were fine in the snow last year, just not sure about the winds as they are situated under lots of big trees! Which to be fair OH did point out to me, could also land on our house! Aagh!

That is a really good idea Redwing. So, if winds are strong and risk of trees landing on the run, put the girls in the cube for as long as necessary. Has anyone any idea how to put water in the cube so it doesn't get spilt? Can chickens drink from rabbit drinkers if trained? Or, a heavy weight bowl with water in...or will the girls knock that over too? I have just the omlet glub and superglug, which I think won't last a minute! Since I'm in Florida, I have wondered what I would do with the chickens if we have a hurricane. I wondered out loud if I could put them in the garage until it passes and my husband had a similar response to yours! I figure I'll take off the run shade, move the !gogreen! away from the fence, weight it all down a bit and hope for the best!

Oh no I wouldn't bring them in

Oh Plum, that is a beautiful thing. I have suggested that a much better use of our spare room might be as a little hen-house, but OH repsonse was something lie :wall::shameonu::shameonu:

On second thought, it might be a bit smelly in the morning with morning-poos :vom:

Leeloo, the tropical storm thing came up on here not long ago; I think the person in question put them down in the storm cellar.

They must have lived further north! We don't generally have storm cellars or basements in Florida (or elsewhere on the coast). The water table is too high so they'd stay flooded most of the time!
