Snowy
My lovely step daughter is getting married in 2 weeks. She has been planning this since before Christmas - it isn't a big do and she is trying to do things on a shoestring. She managed to get a lovely dress off ebay several months ago - it is white with red accents She has also decked out the bridesmaids with second hand dresses which she has managed to colour co-ordinate. I have just had a call from her - she has been to collect her dress from the cleaners and they have managed to allow the red colour to leech into the white!! I really don't know what to suggest for her - whether to abandon hope for that dress and try to find another (I've offered to pay as she cannot afford another dress ) or whether to allow the cleaners to to try and rectify things Anyone offer any magic solutions? Chucky Mama
Oh my word, what have the dry cleaners suggested?
Eggasperated
Oh no, how awful. Surely the dry cleaners have some responsibility to put it right.
Egluntyne
Oh blimey. I hope it can be sorted out.
Paola
Oh no, how awful. Surely the dry cleaners have some responsibility to put it right. Thats my thought too Hope you manage to come up with a solution.
Ain't Nobody Here
Oh, the poor girl . Surely the dry cleaners have a responsibility to put things right - if not, she should get compensation at the very least (no matter that it was bought on Ebay ). welovemarmite
Whether she has the right to a compensation will depend on whether she had to sign any disclaimer, or whether there was any disclaimer on view in the shop. Where does she live? I can feel a massive omlet trawl of second hand shops for wedding dresses coming along.
WitchHazel
So sorry to hear this. I'm not sure that the drycleaners will be able to fix the problem... if it was normal washing, I'd suggest the stuff used for fixing colour runs. Even if they compensate her, she still has to try and find another dress with only 2 weeks to go. I would start looking on Ebay immediately, as that seems the most likely place to find a replacement at such short notice. How bad is the leaching really? I know she can tell that there has been a dry cleaning accident, but would an objective observer realise what has happened? Failing everything else, I wonder if she might be able to hire a dress? No other practical suggestions I'm afraid
WitchHazel
Could also look in Oxfam's wedding shop: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/content/secondhandstore/bridal/default.html
scubababe
What size is she? Do you have a picture of the dress you could upload?
WitchHazel
What size is she? Do you have a picture of the dress you could upload? Also, do you have the label information (designer/style)? I'm guessing her ideal solution would be to get the same dress. One other thought, where is the leaching on the dress? I'm wondering whether it could it be disguised by having some embellishment/s sewn on to the dress which would also cover the problem. LolaLayla
How terrible for your stepdaughter. I feel the dry cleaners should take responsibility for the damage (unless of course they had voiced concerns before cleaning it). The only thing I could suggest is to have a look in the charity shops. I noticed some beautiful ones in our local shop recently. Another suggestion would be to look in the ads in the local paper incase someone is selling one that would be suitable. There would still be time to get some alterations done if necessary. Good luck. bluekarin
Oh no, how awful. Surely the dry cleaners have some responsibility to put it right. You'd think so. I had a beautiful skirt from Monsoon a few years ago. It was dark green with green coloured sequins all over it in a Russian style pattern. I had it dry cleaned as it cost me a lot of money and I thought I'd 'do the right thing'. All the sequins ended up being an off green, off silver colour - totally not what they were and ruined the skirt. I ended up removing all the sequins which took a long time and ended up selling the skirt on ebay. The dry cleaners had nothing to offer I really hope she can do something. Maybe try a colour run remover, if she can't wear the dress anyway, whilst looking for another one off ebay. Charity shops are a good place for wedding dresses. And funnily enough, some dry cleaners have them for sale when people don't go back to pick them up. If you can, let us all know what it looks like, size etc and I am sure Omlet power will save the day. Or try its very hardest
Snowy
Thanks for your thoughts. As I thought, it is unlikely that they will be able to do anything with the dress - she doesn't seem to think that they will anyway. The main problem is getting another dress in time. She is about a size 20, and lives near Bolton - so if anyone sees anything in that area, do shout up! She is trawling ebay as we speak bless her She should be relaxing now, not doing a last minute panic Trouble is she lives so far away, so I can't be any practical help to her either
lindafw
My totally impractical solution....and one I don't expect her to take..it dye it red and be outrageous....as a size 18 I understand the purchasing difficulty
ClaireG
Preloved might be another site worth her checking.

The Dogmother
Oh golly, I hope that she gets it sorted Snowy I've nothing to add to the excellent advice already given, but a local dry cleaner made a mess of a formal dress of mine and immediately offered to compensate me by paying me the full value of it.
