quickcluck
..... and if so who to? I was out for lunch in a local sandwich shop. While waiting in a fairly long queue I was watching the lady who was making the sandwiches just day dreaming. I saw her take various toasties out of the grill with her fingers, which i thought was odd. When I continued you watching she went straight to making a sandwich by hand without cleaning her hands I was horrified to see her pick up some sliced cheese (no gloves) take what she needed and put it back, then picked up some ham (no gloves) put apart what she needed to fit the sandwich, she then wiped her hands on her leggings and carried on!!!! I said to my friend I was not happy to eat there, said to the girl on the till why and walked out! I know I am fussy, I am veggie and think everyone should where gloves as I don't want my food touched my meaty fingers or utensils. I also believe the prevention of cross contamination is vital... could be the nurse in me!!! I am unreasonable? Subway always ask if i'd like them to change their gloves, wear aprons and have their hair covered! Any opinions, my DH says I over react so just thought I'd check... Egluntyne
I'd complain. Does she wash her hands after visiting the loo or blowing her nose ? If she wore gloves you would worry less about those sort of issues.
zakjon-98
I'd complain too.
Cheeky Chooky
I think you were quite right in voting with your feet! I agree, I'd complain too

Groovychook
Me four!! I'm a veggie too and I'd have been none too pleased to see that! Think that a food hygiene refresher course might be helpful for her. Maybe you could suggest that in a letter to the manager of the shop! merlina
I'd complain! To the environmental health dept at the local council I did this once - someone was putting cakes in bags, handling money, then cakes etc etc. ewwww Don't know the outcome, but didn't see them doing it again
clucker1
Definitely complain, hopefully it will prevent someone becoming ill.
soapdragon
Ohhhhh, how disgusting ! Don't think you are over reacting AT ALL! I'd def. complain, both to the shop and to the local Environmental Health! I've gone all goosebumpy just thinking about it - huge potential for loads of nasties passed on and it DOES make you wonder about both her standards of hygeine and the training provided by the shop! Fair put me off my fishcakes, that has! Do keep us updated!
Alis girls
I think you should. Several of the boys friends are veggie and I really make an effort to keep meat if serving separate from the veggie option. Her hygiene is a major worry. she could have Hep A or anything. Chortle Chook
Wiped her hands on her leggings while in the middle of handling food Sounds revolting
Snowy
I agree - a quick call to environmental health. They are supposed to do regular inspections of places that sell food, so they will be very interested!
craftyhunnypie
Please complain! Somebody will eventually get a dodgy tummy & it's not on! Environmental Health would never tolerate her actions! I once reported someone for wiping the inside of the glass counter whilst the food was still in the display. The chemical spray was just going straight on the food. Not to mention all the germs on the cleaning cloth - yuk! Emma.x
snowberry
I'd definately complain. Another worry would be the cross-contamination of products that cause allergies in some people.
freddie
Complain. Most food places are really slack, I'm a Caterer in my past life, for schools, and have seen some horrible things. I will Never eat at Subway, sooner starve. Best yet, was in Giraffe, Exeter, where the wait staff drops a cloth on the floor, kicks it back into their hand, and carries on wiping tables. We left, ever so quickly. I didn't complain, too tired, with small kids at the time.
quickcluck
Thanks guys, makes me feel a tad better...... All I need to do now is remember what the blinking place was called.... I might investigate who to contact at the local council....
Chortle Chook
Posh outlets can be every bit as bad. I once waitressed for just a day at a posh restaurant in Chelsea where they had windows for the customers to look onto the kitchen with all its sparkling copper pans. Underneath the window the floor was horrendous - just covered in bits of food that never got cleaned up and was all mouldy. The cooking staff would add the odd bit to the food the waitressing staff were supposed to eat I did a morning stint then went home and told my sister who immediately packed up my uniform and sent it back in the post with a letter saying I would not be back
patsylabrador
I kept meaning to tell you about my Dad. He was Head Chef and very, very strict about hygiene. His chefs and catering staff were not allowed to go near the toilets in their whites and absolutely not allowed out of the kitchens in their whites. You should have heard the ranting if he saw chefs or bakers outside in the street. Smoking was banned and the showers were pointed out to anyone who turned up to work looking grubby. This was all in the days before 'Health & Hygiene' was such a big thing so there's no excuse for bad practices now. My Dad was almost obsessive that people should be able to trust the food on their plate. It was one of his maxims - you never mess about with people's food. I'm all for that one. quickcluck
Well guys I took your advice and wrote to the council. They have replied too which I am most surprised at! Apparently the cafe has a 3 star rating and was due for a repeat inspection next year. However because of this incident they will now go back asap. I am pleased that they listened to what I had to say and I do think that this is the best outcome. I do have a feeling that because of my comments in the shop that things may have already changed. As long as practice improves that is the main point. Thanks for you help

MedusA
Well done quickcluck! I read your original post and as I am also veggie, I'm just the same as you. I always ask them to change their gloves before making my sandwich. Not wearing gloves in this day and age is inexcusable.
