The Dogmother
Anyone know anything about this? I have been recommended to try the antiseptic version (also contains tea tree oil and manuka honey) for the eczema on my poor old hands. bluekarin
Never heard of this so have just googled it a bit. Seems to have mixed reviews, mainly from the ethical side of things. The amount of this fat that is on an emu isn't huge compared to the amount that is on the market. The feeling is its no longer a by product of the emu as meat animals, and they are being killed just for the oil. As for it being good for eczema, no idea. I am not sure I would want to use it for my eczema tbh but if there is some research that it provides lots of relief and the emus aren't just being used for this, then I might change my mind. soapdragon
DM...can't pm you for some strange reason! Am happy to send you some of my soap.....pm ME your address! I have a friend who has eczema and says its useful! Equally you could try L'Occitane foot cream....sounds odd but my mate swears by it and I use it on my hands too! Geoid
DM, let me know if it works! My eczema on my hands is the worst it has been for months, so I am back on the strong steroid cream (and antibiotics).
Louise
Hey Claire have you tried good old fashioned neutrogena? Works a treat for me! Don't use anything with petroleum jelly in as this just suffocates the skin so nothing made by Vaseline!!! Neutrogena is glycerin based so your skin can absorb it!!! The Dogmother
Thanks Guys, I have tried all of those suggestions over the years, and I can manage it by avoiding any soap products ( sorry soapdragon ) and anything containing SLS as well. I have had some success with Bio Oil, and also with (bizarrely) Palmer's Coconut Oil hair dressing for afro hair, although I can't keep my hand smothered when I am at work as it just isn't practical. Paraffin wax treatments used to work, but not many places do that now, and it's not cheap either. The eczema is more or less under control these days, but due to the steroid cream used when I was young, the skin is now very thin and dry, and prone to cracking, especially around the tops of my fingers. In the winter, I go to bed with smothered hands, and cotton gloves in an effort to keep the skin soft and avoid splitting. I do a lot of outdoor stuff, which involves getting my hands wet, but try to wear waterproof gloves. Geoid, I really feel for you; I remember the problems well. I have ordered a 10ml trial size of this oil, will see how it goes and report back.
Valkyrie
My poor old dad's fingers and hands cracked terribly. I got him the Body Shop hemp hand cream. It doesn't have a particularly nice smell but they helped his hands more than the prescription creams. I don't know if they still do it. Luvachicken
Vote here for the hemp hand cream from the body shop (and foot cream, hemp lypsil ) I think its quite protective for hands that are in a lot of water/outside. Also the child I work with uses Aveeno - his hands always feel soft the next day he comes in.
UKMARCH
I haven't tried that and expect you've tried most creams by now but I find Simply Herbs chickweed cream is good its natural and has tea tree but is quite oily so only use it at night and I use L'Occitane Sweet Almond Oil liquid soap for hand washing which doesn't affect my hands whereas other products do. I have also used the Simply herbs foot cream on my dog's corns!
Alis girls
There seems to be an oil for everything at present. I got rosehip as read its good for wrinkles but forget to use so need an oil for forgetfulness. Soapdragon do you have a website for your soaps? Groovychook
I get eczema on the palm of my right hand... finally worked out that it was from poo picking wearing a rubber glove. I have a latex allergy and since I've switched to using a latex free glove, it's been much better. I had to use a course of steroid cream to get on top of it and now use Aveno regularly... seems to keep it at bay but I do notice it flaring up again if I forget to moisturise my hands enough. Aveno lasts through hand washing too
Chickabee
"Paraffin wax treatments used to work, but not many places do that now, and it's not cheap either." You can buy do it yourself paraffin wax treatment equipment. I've seen it on amazon
The Dogmother
I'd have to do one hand at a time though...... I have been using the Emu oil, and it certainly seems to have healed the splits, and I am trying to be better at using the Palmer's coconut oil stuff too. PixieDust
I get very dry has due to my hypothyroidism. Backs are like sand paper. The best I have found is Palmer Cocoa Butter which is very thick but absorbs quickly. The hemp cream did nothing for me. The doctor gave me some Epaderm which is literally liquid paraffin wax. Works but I don't like it much. I also find my hands are worse after eating rubbish food.
Chicken shack
I suffer badly and I discovered by chance it was any product with anti bactirial. I also cover my hands at night with hemp oil/cream from the body shop and were thin cotton gloves! I look like a ----- and minstrel when I go to bed! PixieDust
Ooh jazz hands Chicken shack! Yes anti bac soap I find very drying too. Try not to use it much.
Geoid
My GP (and dermatologist) have banned me from using soap. I have to use emollient instead, but at £8.20 for a 500ml bottle, it's not cheap.
The Dogmother
I just use ones which don't contain SLS - I found that to be the main cause.
soapdragon
There seems to be an oil for everything at present. I got rosehip as read its good for wrinkles but forget to use so need an oil for forgetfulness. Soapdragon do you have a website for your soaps? I don't, sadly! I made quite a lot before having children but the sodium hydroxide makes it dodgy to have hanging around as it hardens and the SH neutraises out!! I looked into selling it thinking of craft fairs etc but would have had to have had Public Liability Insurance which was rather expensive so really not worth investing in unless I was going to turn it into a cottage industry (at that point I didn't have time to do this and would anyway have been hard in a domestic setting.) So now I just have 3 or 4 bars left over tho I might get cracking again during the summer term!!! I made one with coffee grounds in which was totally amazing at getting rid of really strong smells (useful after chopping garlic etc!!) L'ocitane liquid soap is lovely...I treated myself to some from QVC which came with two refill pouches but I'm not feeling flush enough to replace it as yet!!!
