Sucess and Dissapointment

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was just wondering what everybody thoght about their harvests this year. Have their bean (sorry  ) any huge successes and gluts or contrastingly any failures and dissapointments where you got a poor/little crop.

For me I have had a lot of dissapointments:

Spring Onions (Refused to Germinate)

Raddish (Refused to grow after germinating)

Broad Beans (Produced a crop of less than 1/2kg. From 4 rows)

Brocolli (Human Error - MANY TIMES. First my Dad dug them over when he was meant to be digging over something else, then my cousin dug them over by accident thinking the brocolli was weeds, and then I planted some more seeds and they germinated but all died!):lol:

Greenhouse (Not a single tomato or cucumberthis year, somebody sprayed a weedkiller on their plot and it blew into my greenhouse.

Strawberries (Slug eaten, often tasted like chemicals and stoled by other lottie holders)

Miracles:

Dwarf Beans (A crop of 6.5kg)

Courgettes (Usually had 1 or 2 a day over the summer and they're still cropping now)

Runner Beans (Continue Flowering and Cropping no matter what)

Beetroot (Lots of delicious bulbs, ready for pickling now)

Blight Free Potatoes (15 good sized potatoes off each plant)

Looking forward to your input

:D

Successes:

Runner beans, there's loads of them and I keep going out and picking them

Sweetcorn, had some of it for the first time tonight, so good, delicious and really sweet-literally picked ten minutes before eating!

Pumpkin, taken over the garden

Leeks, Looking really good

Tomatoes, loads of plants, looking really fruitful

Sweet peas, they've just started to flower, so everytime I get flowers I pick them and put them in a vase on the table, they smell really good and are really pretty

FAILURES:

Lettuce, everytime planted the slugs ate it

Courgettes, 5 plants, now one

Tomatoes, Mum forgot to get the chicken sitter to water them, are recovering though.

Strawberries, Starlet to a liking to them!

Basil, It never germinated

Overall it's been really good and I love growing veg, and am still planning what else to grow for the rest of the year.

You're not too late to grow:

Swiss Chard

Kale

Spinach

Spring Cabbage

Cauliflower

Carrots (Ideal for small spaces - They can be grown in buckets)

Potatoes for Chritmas (Can be grown in buckets or compost bags)

Courgettes (In a greenhouse, under fleece)

Lettuce

All Herbs

Probably loads more!

Glad you had a successful grow.

:P Successes - Tomatoes, Aubergines, Sweetcorn, Apples, Lettuces.

:( Failures ( that did do well last year :? ) - runner beans and Courgettes.

Sweet peas have also been good again this year.

In the wilds - the sloes are going blue, and there are BAGS of hazelnuts - no field mushrooms yet though round here :( . Oh, and blackberries - some ready, some will be in the next couple of weeks. :D

Doing well:

Runner beans, french beans, all sorts of beans - I have a freezer full!

Rhubarb

Potatoes - first and second earlies were great.

Broad beans

Courgettes

Butter nut squash (lots growing)

Jerusalem artichoke

Curly Kale

Spinach and swiss chard

Tomatoes (just ripening outside)

Cucumber

Chillis

Aubergine

Sweetcorn

Not doing so well

Carrots (although I have just planted some fresh seed)

Parsnips

Broccoli and cabbage and cauliflower

Not bad for a first year I don't think and I am a complete novice - I have an ongoing battle with the weeds and am determined to grow more of the stuff I like next year (less courgette - although did have some in a chocolate cake last week!!).

Very interesting topic! Here are my results (grown in high-walled garden in central Edinburgh):

Did or doing well:

  • Peas
    Broad Beans
    Leeks
    All my herbs except Basil
    Cos lettuce
    Rocket
    Lollo Rosso lettuce
    Broccoli
Second early potatoes (Duke of York)
    3 kinds of raspberries
    Apples
    Plums

Disaster:

  • Courgettes - 6 fine healthy plants all just got eaten up
French Beans (planted 3 times but either didn't germinate or got eaten as soon as they appeared)
    Pears (there is 1!)
    Basil

My rhubarb is also happy - nothing ever seems to upset it!

There seems to be a spectacular quantity of snails this year and a lot of slugs.

My very first attempt at veg growing:

Successes

Runner beans

Carrots

Broccoli

Cucumber

Courgettes

Parsley

Peas

Radish

Lettuce (mixed salad leaves)

Not brilliant, but got some results:

potatoes

tomatoes

dwarf french beans

sweetcorn (still growing)

spring onions (still growing)

Failures

Peppers

And I have a load of leeks still going strong! :)

I have found the solution to my Veg glut of things I'm not too keen on!! Yesterday I put a plastic box outside my house with a note to please help yourself to free fresh vegetables.

Full of:

10 x courgettes ( I even tried courgette chocolate cake but there are just too many!)

2 x bags of runner beans (freezer is full)

bunches of spinach and rainbow chard ( I have loads)

I thought it would still be there at the end of the afternoon. Within 3 hours - all gone. This evening I have planted winter radishes, winter lettuce, Lambs lettuce and radichio. Let's hope they taste nice!
