Mixed public toilets

Recommended Posts

Not a fan. I've only used two lots of mixed public loos and they were gross. It's different in pubs, restaurants etc where they're maintained regularly but these were horrible. I'm not going to pretend that women are sweet angels when it comes to toilets because some women are utterly inconsiderate and dirty but they seem to hit the target most times. The ones I hate most are in the V&A, the floors and seats are piddly and there's nowhere to put your bag. If there's no one around I use the nice baby changing toilets.

I agree, although at home most of us have a mixed toilet...

I wish everyone could just sit down, men and women. Because “floating” women are just as bad! We actually locked some loos at school because some boys were playing firefighter in the loo. Not just around the urinal though...

Yuck to mixed toilets, although as Cat tails said, we do have them at home - my family are house trained though.

In Australia, when we went to see DS , there were plenty of free toilets in very exposed places with no one to clean them or any flushing equipment but they were always clean. One toilet even had a whole stash of toilet rolls.

I don't understand how public toilets over here are so dire in comparison.

And getting more dire apparently. I’m reading Invisible women, written by Caroline Criado Perez. Brilliant book about the way the world sees a white man as a default and women are the deviation from normal. It also discusses toilets. And highlights research that the lack of single sex toilets in mostly third world countries is a cause of sexual harassment and abuse to women. Amazing read!

There is apparently a theatre in London that now has gender neutral loos with urinal and gender neutral loos without urinal. Which effectively doubled the options for men, but definitely not for women as we can not use a urinal. So there are still endless lines for the gender neutrals without urinal.

I have never understood why men have equal floor space in loo-land to women. Urinals take up less space and men just take less time.

Whenever we go anywhere and all make a loo dash - generally motorway services/Waitrose - the boys are all out ages before me as there is ALWAYS a loo queue in the ladies but never in the gents.

Oh and I detest those naff pubs/eateries that have stupid names on the ladies and gents........cocks and hens, lads and lasses, guys and gals :vom:; I suppose they think it's 'trendy'? Well, I'm 55 (rather will be on Sunday ) and I don't do 'trendy'. Mind you I didn't do 'trendy' when I was 25 but heyho

Thinking on this further, quite apart from the modesty issues, there are major safety implications as well. There are weird people out there and it would be easy for a woman to be assulted or worse in a mixed loo. Equally some odd bods have a propensity to expose themselves and mixed loos would make it much easier for this to happen 'accidentally'.

Very true.  When number one son was fairly young, but sort of double figures, husband always went to the loo at the same time to make sure no other creature was lurking.  With regard to little darlings of the same age and whatever gender, the lack of privacy for those requiring it could be rather unpleasant with unsupervised children or, as you say - even worse if pranks backfired!

This is exactly what is said in the book I mentioned. Women who have no access to single gender loos are at far greater risk to get assaulted. This mostly true for third world countries.

I was also thinking about women with small children who use the loo with the door slightly propped open so they can see their children. I was in ladies at Hong Kong airport and a man wandered in and my word did he get yelled at and harried out but last week I was in ladies here and two men wandered in and none of us said anything. Mind you, some poor ladies having a bad time do leave loos looking like a scene from psycho. I think that will put most men off taking the mickey.
