Karen & co.
I have been out in the veg patch this afternoon with the help of ES and started tidying up I just wanted to warn you all because I have done a really dozy thing I leaned forward quickly to grab a weed and bashed my eye socket on the tip of a post holding netting around a plant to protect it from the chooks The post luckily was reasonably blunt and slid between the top of my eye lid and underneath the brow bone (if that makes sense?) leaving a lovely red track along my eyeball and a bruise forming on my lid and brow I can see clearly again (it knocked my contact lense out of my eye ) but made me feel really sick, so I came inside for a cup of tea made by ES and some chocolate I have always been paranoid about stick fights etc when the children were little, and then I did something stupid Take care if you are out in the garden. clootie
Gosh, that was too close for comfort !! I'm glad you're okay but that sounds really nasty. So glad to hear the medicinal chocolate worked it's magic - it does have incredible powers but I think you might need a little more just to be sure
chickencam
We have Actimel pots on most of our canes and poles, works a treat, and they rattle in the wind too, so may act as bird scarers too Hope you're ok and the chocolate did the trick, good advice
Mrs Frugal
Oooh Karen, how horrible . I must admit that I'm paranoid about sticks and stakes in the garden. FIL puts old Steradent tubes over all of the bamboo canes at the allotment which makes them safer when we're picking fruit and veg as it's so easy to lean over to pick something and not see a bamboo cane amongst the foliage. Not very attractive in a garden though! Hope your eye doesn't bruise badly but I'm glad it's not as bad an injury than it could have been. Joojoo
That sounds horrible. Poor you I'm not surprised you needed to sit down and have a cuppa. I'm a bit paranoid about canes too and tend to buy the little caps for them if I do use them anywhere. Pleased it's not as serious an injury as it could have been. I expect it will be sore for a few days though
Egluntyne
Easily done. I once poked my eye on the tip of a carving knife that was handle down, blade up in the dishwasher. I was leaning over to put some plates in. I know exactly how you feel. Take care,

buffie
May be worth getting it checked for a scratch Karen, poor you. I ended up at the eye hospital last december when a branch flipped and hit me in the eye! It is very painful so take care Buffie x
ClaireG
Ouch, that sounds really sore. Glad the choccie helped a bit.
Gamebird
Thanks for the warning. It's a shame you had to go through all that pain just to tell us how dangerous canes can be I hope there is no damage to the eyeball. As Buffie says, it might be worth having it looked at to make sure.
Couperman
Cheap tennis balls slotted on the top of the canes seem to work well, from and elf n safety point of view. I meant to do this when I saw it on someone else's plot but didn't get round to it. I have had a nasty eye cut with a tape measure it took years to get back to normal and was agony for quite some time. So you have my sympathy. Hope it gets better soon. Kev. missuscluck
oooh Karen. Hope you are ok. If its a bit iffy tommorrow, get it looked at. I dunno. Its not safe to be off work is it? Staying at home is a battlefield, your far safer locked up at work out of mischief
ubereglu
Poor you. Surprisingly I've not done that to myself yet, but usually I just end up falling over the canes!
craftyhunnypie
OMG Karen, I bet that really hurt - it could have been terribly nasty. Imagine losing your sight! Ping pong balls with smiley faces drawn on them (use a sharpie pen), make good decorations & protectors for pole ends. My hubby has a puncture mark on his chest - just below one of his pecks, where his sister stabbed him with a knitting needle whilst playing! I presume they were pretending to be Luke Skywalker & Darth Vader?! I'm just glad it missed his heart! Emma.x

Karen & co.
That does sound horrible Karen - how are you feeling today? Just a bit stupid It's sore and the red streak is running from the join with the pupil and the white of my eye just over the cornea so I think I'll need to see the Optician to see if it's alright to out my lenses in. I'm glad ES was at home at the time as he lead me in out of the garden and made the tea I was thinking last night that it was a good job my lenses are soft ones as the thought of breaking a hard one in my eye, made me feel Karen x
Christian
Sorry to hear that Karen. Definitely do NOT put your lenses in. They will irritate the surface of the eye and could cause more damage. I had to stop wearing mine for a few weeks when I poked my eye. Hope it clears up soon.
Snowy
It would be worth getting your eyes checked Karen, just to make sure there has been no internal damage. Glad you are feeling a bit better today A friend of mine lost his eye doing the exact same thing (although luckily he was blind in it to start with! )
Ms Marple
Definitely do NOT put your lenses in. They will irritate the surface of the eye and could cause more damage. I had to stop wearing mine for a few weeks when I poked my eye.I would agree with this statement and agree that a checkup is well worth it. You do not need or want an infection.Hope you feel better soon. More chocolate I would think - it does have quite magical properties.... Like other palatable sweet foods, consumption of chocolate triggers the release of endorphins, the body's endogenous opiates. Enhanced endorphin-release reduces the chocolate-eater's sensitivity to pain. Endorphins probably contribute to the warm inner glow induced in susceptible chocoholics. Warm inner glows always seem to help!!!

Seagazer
Ooh yuk - someone I know did this years ago. They had a sore eye for ages. Always put me off putting canes in the garden - I have a lot of short plants Hope its better soon.
The Dogmother
Yeeeouch Karen! Take care and look after that eye. Thanks for the warning. I had a hole in my leg from a garden cane; still got the scar
Ain't Nobody Here
Ouch . My eyes are still watering after reading that . Hope you recover soon - it sounds really painful .
Karen & co.
Well after a quick trip to get my eye looked at the Optician said the cornea is clear and fine although he winced at the bruise running from my iris up over the top of the eye I'll be staying away from very young children at the moment as it still looks like I'm wearing a halloween contact lense Karen x
