It's Official! I'm old! Bits of me are wearing out!

Recommended Posts

 Went for an eye test today, first one for over 20 years, as my eyes have been aching a bit sometimes after work (8 hours in air conditioning in artificial light doing computer work)

When he covered up my left eye and got me to read the letters on the screen - I couldn't see! My right eye is SOOOOOO blurry and I hadn't even noticed! So, cue first pair of glasses! I knew this day would come as EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF MY FAMILY without exception wears glasses but now I have physical evidence that bits of me are wearing out! Well, I am 40 after all!

So that was over £100 that I could have done without, picking them up tomorrow though - funky bright red frames, now thinking I should have chosen green but never mind.....

And even though they're just for computer work and reading I am going to walk out of the shop wearing them, I will wear them all the way home, I might even wear them when I go to the pub on Sunday!!

I'm really excited, been waiting for this day for ages!

Yes, I remember my first pair about 3 years ago...I was finding that I had to hold fine print and books further and further away in order to read. My optician said that it was 'perfectly normal age- related long-sightedness' and that most people (who have had otherwise good vision) succumb to it in their 40s. So join the club. Specs are cool. 8)

I've been wearing glasses since I was 18 so its no great thrill for me but when I reached 40 the optician said that my eyesight would start to go the other (I'm short sighted) so hubby and I were hoping that for a short while our eyesight would balance out and we wouldn't need anything. Sadly it doesn't work like that.

Your glasses sound fab. I'm hoping to get some new modern looking ones. I always go for ones that blend in. I want to stand out more!! :D

You weren't alone in that hope, Seagazer! To my intense disappointment, when I went for an eye test last year, not only had I developed an inability to read small print, but my short sight had actually got worse too and I needed a new prescription for the first time in years. The optician said he commonly sees this in short-sighted people. :(

Ditto  I started wearing glasses at 11 for short sightedness , and hoped once I needed ones for reading then my prescription would be equalled out :lol:

Now I need two pairs. Your funky ones sound lovely :D

my eyes are rubbish :D

in the last 2 years my perscription has changed (quite dramatically  ) however, its a great excuse to get funky new glasses :D

I used to wear all day/all night lenses, but I was having trouble with my eyes, so I cancelled the direct debit for them and with the money I got back I got 2 new pairs of specs :D (buyone get one free :D )

Ive been wearing glasses since I was 16, so no hassle for me on that front either :D

enjoy vision - its great :D

I hope you got your employer to pay for the eye test. You might even be able to get them to pay for the glasses if you only need them for computer work http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg36.pdf See page 5.

I daren't go for an eyetest! I had one (and new glasses) about 4 years ago and I know I should go again but the COST!!!!! I only started wearing glasses at 17 when I started driving, but with hindsight had struggled to read the board a bit in school before that. Only needed them for driving for the first 2/3 years but now wear them all the time (well it is 20 yrs later)

I went to the docs last week as been having problems with my neck and arms since getting whiplash diving into a pool last summer. He said it's probably arthritis in my neck and carpal tunnel in my arms and it's just a fact of getting older  I was only 40 in November. He did also send me for a neck xray though incase I had fractured it, and a blood test for various things -apparently I'm anaemic again.

You're right BeckyBoo, there comes an age when you suddenly realise that you're not as young and resilient as you used to be. I hope this doesn't mean I shall have to act my age :anxious:

I am so long sighted I can see the bus 1/2 mile away and tell u the number plate and how many passengers  Everything else seems to be wearing out too. Knee locks going down stairs, scitica and I'm really old at 47!! For the first time in my life I have the hint of a cleavage! At christmas the sleezeball behind the counter in the butchers made eye contact with my boobs and not my eyes :oops::roll: I was gob smacked I know some friends have had this all their lives I am now middle aged and having my bosoms oggled. It wasnt like I had a very low top on just a slightly low :shock: My husband said youve always wanted boobs and that I should be happy :D

I have had to wear glasses since I was 17. I now wear disposable contacts as I found glasses and sport didn't mix. I still have glasses as back up and for night shifts. Buying glasses is a nightmare as I am only small teen sized in glasses (I am 43years old!), last time Boots managed to find some petite frames but there was very little choice. They were on buy one get one free ( so I got the same frames in two different colours)

Well I'm wearing me specs, this will take some getting used to! I'd already been on the puter for about half an hour, went up for a bath and read some of my library book, came back down, logged on again and suddenly thought, "Ohh, I'm supposed to be wearing my glasses for computer work and reading!" So here they are, perched on the end of me hooter, and it's already different, my eyes are definitely working differently with them on. Of course the moment I take them off everything is, for a fraction of a second, all blur and seasickness, bit I'm sure I'll get used to it!

They are VERY groovy though!

Babes in arms? Well that's as maybe but how on earth do you all manage? I keep forgetting I'm supposed to be wearing the blooming things, which means I have to keep getting up from my comfortable, wrapped in a snuggly blanket on the sofa place to go and get them, then, how am I supposed to keep glancing up at the TV which is on the other side of the room without getting seasick, or peering over the top of me specs like a school mistress?? There's more to this glasses lark than meets the eye......
