Chickendoodle
We always think of American place names in songs as they are much more romantic sounding than ours - Phoenix, San Fransisco, Whichita, New York etc etc. What song has your town in it? Haven't heard it for years but on Radio 2 this morning they played David Bowie's The Laughing Gnome It features the immortal line: I put him on a train to Eastbourne, carried his bag and gave him a fag (Edited for stupidly calling the song Bridget the Midget instead of The Laughing Gnome ) Edited December 15, 2009 by Guest
WarrensWorld
Take me back to Castlebar. Take me back To Castlebar, in the county of Mayo It's the only place in Ireland; I'm longing for to go Where they greet you with a friendly smile and they bid you time of day, When I set me foot in old Mayo I never more will stray. Perhaps it should be 'Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner'.........
patsylabrador
Where I live doesn't even register in my mind it's so dull, hence the allotment and chickens. I can't imagine it ever featuring in a song but you never know. If you take London as a whole then yes! Hurrah! That makes me feel better. Old Speckled Hen
Where I used to live we had "Now Ernie had a rival, an evil-looking man, Called Two-Ton Ted from Teddington and he drove the baker's van. He tempted her with his treacle tarts and his tasty wholemeal bread, And when she seen the size of his hot meat pies it very near turned her head." Happy chickens!
The town I grew up in certainly does - couldn't be any less American either! 'Ilkley Moor Bhat'at' Which means Ilkley Moor without a hat; as children we loved the verses which end up with the person who dared go on the moor hatless, dead of a cold and buried, eaten by worms, then ducks, then we eat the ducks, so we will have eaten our hatless friend!! bluekarin
after thinking there was only one, which actually isn't one as its spelt Solsbury Hill (Peter Gabriel) and not Salisbury, I've only gone and found 'Salisbury' by Uriah Heap!!! Snowy
Witches on a hill? Real witches? Emma.x Yes! They were tried and executed in 1612 though - Pendle is famous for it's witches. And regarding my village being in a song Not much rhymes with Fleckney. It sounds like some weird infectious disease - hardly songworthy! Valkyrie
Does this count? Yo Ho, Yo Ho, Yo Ho, Yo Ho, Yo Ho So, Try the life of a thief Just sample the life of a crook There isn't a boy Who won't enjoy A-workin' for Captain Hook The World's Most Famous Crook Then there's Dr Hook Two in one here: I often dream of trains when I'm alone I ride on them into another zone I dream of them constantly Heading for paradise Or Basingstoke or Reading I often dream of trains when I'm awake They ride along beside a frozen lake And there in the buffet car I wait for eternity Or Basingstoke or Reading I often dream of trains till it gets light The summer turns to winter overnight The leaves fall so suddenly The sun sets at four o'clock Exactly what I'm dreading I often dream of trains when I'm with you I wonder if you dream about them, too Maybe we'll meet one night Out in the corridor I'm waiting for you, baby Baby baby baby I take it Basingstoke and Reading are not up to Paradise then. Lesley
No songs that I can think of although good old Will wrote about a few of the villages around Stratford "Hungry Grafton, Dudging Exhall, Papist Wixford, Beggarly Broom and Drunken Bidford" but none of the ones I've lived in.
