Guest
or do i just have OCD? I sort everything next to the sink in the order that I'm going to wash everything. Glasses first then any cups or mugs (which have to have no tea or coffee in them, I pour the dregs down the middle sink first) then it depends what has the most food stuck to it or is the least greasy. The most yukky things get left to last, they usually get a brieef wash in what's left of the dishwater then i empty the sink, refill with fresh hot soapy water, wipe down the worktops etc with the fresh water then give the greasy stuff a final and 2nd wash. Then the cutlery goes in. If the water is still reasonably clean I'll either then do the dog bowls or leave the water in to wash any cups and things that crop up later. DH just lobs it all in any old how but things tend to end up not properly clean and i end up doing them again! do I need help!?
C&T
Nope - no help required! I do a similar thing!! Except first, everything that can is put in the dishwasher, and then the rest is sorted. Cleanest stuff washed first, dirtiest last - changing the water as required! Common sense!
Redwing
Glasses washed and put aside mugs, plates, bowls, cutlery oven trays saucepans grill pan sink emptied glasses rinsed sink refilled to about an inch and draining board washed down Switch sponges chick feeders then cat and dog bowls last in remains of soapy water Its so automatic that until you see it typed out you dont realise that there is a system
BarbaraJ
Yes but most goes in the dishwasher, couldn't be without mine with 5 adults and numerous little kids every day!
feemcg
I have a dishwasher but I'm a bit OCD with how the plates, mugs etc are put in. I moan at my daughters that they never put their stuff in the dishwasher, then whe they do I take it all back out again and put it back according to my 'system'
docsquid
Same routine here - cleanest first, muckiest last. I sometimes put the mucky things to soak with hot water and washing-up liquid while wupping the clean things. The dishwasher gets a lot of stuff, but with only 2 of us it takes 2-3 days to fill up, so I have to wash pans and food processors and things in the meantime. Chicktastic
Does that mean we are all a bit OCD then???? I don't have a dishwasher, I do the routine much the same as you lot. I am very OCD about the washing up though!!! My mum and Dad had a pub and I used to do most of the washing up and was a bit of a perfectionist. I had to have thick black industrial gloves so the water could be nearly boiling and every bubble had to be rinsed off the pots before they were left to drain. 15 years later and I'm still the same about the water temperature and the bubbles!!! Seagazer
I'm not bothered about washing up in a certain order but I have been known to redo the dishwasher after certain people have put stuff in (namely my mum) - she just puts everything in the wrong place or the wrong way round. Ain't Nobody Here
I always rinse, sort and stack everything before doing the dishes (even if it's a while later). All cutlery has to be in mugs or jugs. I'm not OCD at all .
Space Chick
If I can wash things up as I go along while I'm cooking I do, this is sink of water 1. This along with the last cooking pots gets left in the sink until after tea, then I do a pre-wash with this water of the last pots and plates. Then I run a fresh sink of water and start glasses, mugs, then small plates, then big plates, then cutlery, then pots and pans. I wash, OH wipes and puts away. Once we've finished I then wipe down the work surfaces. Pet bowls always get done in different water, I don't know why, just the way it is
Sunshine
I am very particular about the way stuff goes in the dishwasher so people know now just to leave me to it! If things have been put in by others then i always move it around to my way. Saying that if mum does it she moves it all around again We all have our different ways that are all different. We don't wash that much up by hand so that just gets done as when it needs it. I used to take over from my sisters or just do it again when they had finished. However i have now started telling them how to clean the stuff properly which is much better.
Sam Palmer
I have a dishwasher but I'm a bit OCD with how the plates, mugs etc are put in. I moan at my daughters that they never put their stuff in the dishwasher, then whe they do I take it all back out again and put it back according to my 'system' I'm exactly the same. I 'KNOW' my way of stacking the dishwasher is far more efficient than anyone else's. I get more dishes in, in an orderly fashion, with knives pointing down for safety, but no one else here remembers. It makes me so cross! I have a specific order for hanging out the washing too.
missuscluck
Our dishwasher goes on once a day in the evening come what may and anything else that we know wont fit gets washed as we go along. In the morning the sink is usualy full of glasses and cups etc from after the dishy has been put on so the first thing I do when I get up is empty the dishwasher of the clean stuff then put the dirty stuff in the dishwasher. Then I fill the sink up with hot soapy water and wash anything large. Leave the water in the sink then whilst everyone passes through the kitchen grazing Hopefully if the wind is blowing in the right direction my lot might put their breakfast dishes in the dishwasher. More likley I will put them in before we leave for work/school and have a quick wipe round. The dog will do his job of eating any stray cherio's or shreddies of the floor. He is quite the kellogs crunchy nutter I cant go out all day leaving a dirty kitchen or a sink full of washing up which is silly as who is going to see it?? I think its the thought of comming home to a mess which I know would make my heart sink. We are out all day then play the nightly game of how much can we stuff in the dishwasher, wash the rest in order of muckiness ie. glasses, plates, pots pans etc.... and the daily cycle is complete. We have had times when we have had no dishwasher, but once you have had one its a pain to do without.
bigmommasally
It seems I have a much simpler method for washing up than everyone else: Leave it to OH! - I cook & he washes up. And on the rare occassion he cooks - he washes up
Plum
Poet I do the same order as you but I do wash the pans before eating it's so much less to look at when you go back in the kitchen.
Treekeeper
Yes our routine is shouting upstairs KIIIIIIIIDS WHOSE DISHWASHER NIGHT IS IT??? Relax and return to lounge
Looney
I do Bogwoppit stuff, then cleanest through to muckiest I rinse off stuff first too. I do get very protective over what goes into the bowl though I will allow a few bits in to soak at a time but cannot work with a bowl full of dishes! Heaven help OH if he just dumps something in the bowl when I am mid-flow, oooh it drives me potty!
Blackrocksrock
All go in dishwasher including pans etc - I love my dishwasher - its on either every day or every other day depends on what I am cooking.
Charlottechicken
I do about the same as Poet! When I bake I wash as I go along, as I tend to use the same bowls over and over
Busybird
Just about everything but the pots and oven trays go in the dishwasher - which I have to load my way or it annoys me The rest of the family are encouraged to carry their plates from the table and stack them neatly above the dishwasher ready for me to load. This sometimes happens I then wash pot lids, vegetable pots and messier pots or oven trays in that order. The surfaces are wiped down afterwards with fresh water from the tap. Because I do all the washing up I tend to cook with as few pots as possible. Very occasionally OH will prepare a meal. As I still wash up I 'notice' that he uses a different pot for every stage of the preparation. I try not to say anything as I am grateful that he will make me a meal. The kids sometimes offer to wash up. I know that I have to let them as they are being kind to offer and need to learn but it is hard to put pots away when they are not as sparkling as I like them to be Chicken food containers get washed in the utility room and, occasionally, get a finishing off in the dishwasher. Srsly though, I blame domestic science lessons from The Olden Days. My mum taught me to do it the same way when she enlisted me as Kitchen Aide, and there is a reason - in the cleanest water you wash what touches your mouth directly (cups and cutlery) then the plates, then the cleaner pans, then the mucky pans. Fast-forward to many years after domestic science ceased to exist, and we're all still doing exactly the same.
The Dogmother
I think I do similar to Tasha, although when Phil's around, it's his job - he is a hopeless cook (unless it's toast-based) so he clears up while I cook - works well for me. chickencam
We have a dishwasher, so most glasses etc go in that, but if I do wash by hand glasses get done first. I hate smeary glasswear. I also rinse everything uder the hot tap before it goes on the drainer, because thing drain and dry much quicker if the bubbles are rinsed off them, My OH doesn't rinse anything it all just gets a quick dip, and things like roasting pans are then put into the warm oven to dry. I go to use them next time and they are so greasy because all the greasy water was left on them and they are never washed properly either. I daren't complain too much because he might decide not to clear up and itis nice not to have to do it all everytime, even if I have to redo things sometimes. The children load the dishwasher and clean the table etc, we are also trying to train them to do the few pans etc left over too, but it is not easy. Seagazer
My children do the dishwasher each night but seem to have difficulty recognising that things left over need to be washed up. They think they can just wait for tomorrow's load
