A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I hope he has sick bags! Choppy! Sweet though. As for any environmental impacts, are there any eco-geeks on here? I was wondering if an ash cloud would reduce global warming. Historically, big volcanic ash clouds appear to have had that effect, which may or may not help the damage we wilfully do to the planet? Would be interested to know.
AJuff
OH STILL in Egypt despite plans to fly to Malaga. These plans were cancelled. I do hate being on my own especially with two out of three kids returning to school and one home alone!

Will go back when the planes restart.
SarahJo
Rumours that 1 airline is not flying till tuesday, and another till wednesday regardless. Also Met office have fears the ash cloud will worsen and be particularly bad weds/thurs this week Environmental issues to be considered BUT another point towards the importance of air freight, is the short life span of some medicines. More and more of these are made abroad now and need to be flown to destinations, another massive impact ontop of the others already mentioned. I suppose if some airlines start to "shut" down over this - then theres another major blow to employment and the british economy
mags
my friend is due to fly to New York with her 3 young children on Tuesday ( looking less likely ) i think she would be best to wait a few weeks and let it settle down I think she is risking getting stuck on the way back if she does get to go Mags

Griffin
Daisys school is closed tomorrow for her year group and a couple of the other years because they've got at least 16 teachers missing. Two other daughters go to a different school and they're keeping their fingers crossed theirs gets closed too
SarahJo
B.A have sent a plane from Heathrow - Cardiff, they will then assess themselves any damage to engines etc. Clearly the airlines have had enough now, I have heard of pilots flying through worse including sandstorms unscathed. There now seems to be a battle of wills between the government/met office and Eurocontrol - praise to the airline industry (whether you like them or not) - they are now conducting their own research
Valkyrie
A few light aircraft yesterday - and one of those micro thingies with a parachute. From the news this morning sounds as though it's clear here.
Chickendoodle
My Sister and her husband are in the middle of an epic journey back from Bulgaria. They tried to rent a car to drive to Denmark but there was no way of taking a car out of the country so they are heading to the ferry at Esjberg by train. The first leg was Bulgaria to Budapest, then Budapest to Munich, Munich to Holland on the sleeper, overnight in Holland then on to Denmark tomorrow and hopefully the ferry to Harwich. Then 3 trains to get to their house in Felixstowe followed by another train journey to collect the car from Gatwick. My BIL is a science lecturer so luckily he was very well taken care of in Bulgaria and had someone accompany him to the ticket office who could translate and arrange all of the tickets. He was only out there for a few days and my sister had gone with him to keep him company as she said it was in one of the most boring places on earth ! I am so please we decided on a staycation holiday this year - for the first time in 20 years
Olly
Colleague at work went to Uganda with his church just before Easter, to help build a school ... he should have come back on Saturday, but he's been told the earliest possible flight is now next Sunday, and there's no guarantee yet that he will get a seat on that. Ziggy
DH has arrived in Paris!! Still not home, but sooooo much closer than Helsinki!! I made a map for him and his colleague as a keepsake, detailing their journeys, transport modes, distances and so on... with a picture of the two of them in the hire car they used for some of the trip... He was supposed to work in Paris this week anyway, so will now stay there for a couple of days and hopefully get to London some time Wednesday evening... hopefully!!! There are going to be a lot of emotional 'welcome home' parties in this country in the future... I hope it's in the not-too-distant future for everyone... I really feel for everyone too far away to rely on a long chain of bus/train/boat/car to bring them home... those pictures on tv of people stranded really far away are heartbreaking... Big test of patience for everyone involved!!
Ain't Nobody Here
That's great news, Ziggy . Great idea making a map (not that he'll ever forget the trip ).
The Dogmother
The situation in Iceland seems to be no better, and a second volcano may now blow our MD is now in Portugal as hotel in Majorca (wheer he was stuck) couldn't guarantee him a room fro any longer, so he got a ferry and is staying in one of his apartments there (lucky beggar!) now refusing to drive back here and doesn't particularly want to get a train either.... someone needs to be told that he can't always get his own way.... The Dogmother
We have a thin layer of ash on everything here, and folk are complaining of gritty eyes and throats.
Valkyrie
Erin has gone to college knowing that her teacher that she doesn't see eye to eye with is stuck in America. She's all smiles. Looking on another bright side, the roses should do very nicely this year - sulphur is good for getting rid of black spot.

There appears to be quite a lot of silica in it, which melts and turns into glass, which you seriously DO NOT want in your engines. One of the Biology lecturers is stuck in Tenerife and one of my friends is stuck in Rome, hopefully coming back by a coach on Wednesday. Cinnamon
Devon had the choice of 2 trips for her Classics course this year - Sicily or a Greek cruise. She choose Sicily.....the Greek cruise pupils & staff went last week & won't be home now until May 4th Apparently they are in a real dump of a hotel until they can get out. Devon's Classics exam is in 1 month,& she has not teacher now,so no lessons. They still have an entire play to study - hope they take all this into account when marking That trip is doomed......about 2 years ago the cruise ship sank & all the pupils lost their entire belongings.Devon's boyfriends sister was on it
Chucky Mama
My throat is sore today, I wonder if it is ash related. I wouldn't fancy piloting the first trial planes. Did they draw straws
Lewis
Theres about 10 teachers stuck abroad apparently. 2 of my friends are stuck in France together Have got a train to Paris + are hoping to get a ferry on Thursday. Helly Welly
My throat is sore today, I wonder if it is ash related. I wouldn't fancy piloting the first trial planes. Did they draw straws Willie Walsh was on the BA one, don't know if he's brave or daft?? It looks like there will be some easing of restrictions tomorrow afternoon or evening but it comes a day too late for OH to get to Las Vegas. Still, at least he's not having to call in the navy to rescue him, we're a lot better off than some people.
The Dogmother
That's how we're all feeling, dray faces, throats and eyes. At least we're not in Iceland. I'd not like to be piloting one of those planes. TBH, they all want to get back airborne as soon as possible, but if a plane full goes up and is damaged/crashes because of the dust, they will be in deep poo, so I'd rather that they play safe TBH. Willow
I spent much of yesterday outside as it was a lovely day but regreted it yesterday evening. Terrible congestion, raw throat, puffy gritty eyes and my nose is now red windows closed overnight and I've hardly ventured outside and it's improved but still uncomfortable.
