spots

Recommended Posts

Right, I am in my *ahem* late 30's and for some reason I am getting more spots than I ever did in my teens. I cleanse, tone and moisturise every morning and night and still I get them. I tend to get them leading up to that time of the month and they appear along my jaw line, but I also get them basically anywhere on my face. Does anyone have any suggestions of things to use to try and stop this from happening, or the best products to use to reduce the spots? Many thanks :)

I was just the same at your age and still get the odd outbreak now at 43. My Mum was much the same, but she now looks very young for her 64 years and has lovely soft skin, so maybe we have to wait for the pay off.

My poor 11 year old has terrible skin and has had it for over a year now. It doesn't seem to matter what she uses just as you think you are getting somewhere back they come with avengence :(

My older 2 children have been very lucky with their skin, although 14 yr old DS's time might be yet to come, because his facial hair is only just starting to grow.

I will watch this space with interest.

Its not a recent thing unfortunately, I've just had enough. I was hoping they'd go by now, but nope :( I'm not using any pill or hrt. My mum has soft skin and looks younger than her years, so I too am hoping for that pay off. She, however, doesn't use any, ANY products including moisturiser. Just washes with water  So unfair. I can't do that as I have dry skin and have flare ups of eczema (luckily not on my face just hands and feet).

Not good if its hormonal though as that'll mean I am stuck with them

I struggle to use any products on my face. It took me a while to realise it, but it just can't cope! Therefore, I use water and sometimes soap (a really bland mild one) to wash my face, and when I need to, I use a light nivea moisturiser. I still get some spots, but nothing like I do if I try to use make-up or other products on my face!

I would suggest following what your mum does - and stop using your existing products, give it a few days, and see if you notice any change? I realise the risk of eczema flaring up - but could be worth giving it a go?

Does take a few days for the skin to adjust - it is used to the moisturiser at the moment, so reacts accordingly. It needs to learn that it won't get moisturiser/other "things", and then (in many cases but not all!) adjust accordingly. But you know your skin!

I always have an issue coming back from a holiday. On holiday I put sun cream on my face (better then getting burned!!) but the sun helps the skin cope with that. When I get back, I stop the sun cream, and there isn't usually much sun around either! Takes a few days for the skin to get back to "normal" - dries out for a few days, over compensates, and then adjusts back to normal.

I used to use Dermalogica products which my beauty therapist (I only go for my nails, nothing posh!) recommended which was really expensive. I used it for a couple of years and continued having small bumps/spots under my skin, pretty much all over my face. She'd blame it on the weather, sunshine, hormones, our woodburner in winter!

I eventually swapped to Clinique cleansing soap bar - staight forward wash with water, no toning or moisturising unless my face is really dry.

My spots have almost cleared up now, think the BT was just trying to convice me so she could sell the Dermalogica.

Hope this helps x

I've been happy with the following. Aqua marina cleanser from Lush, then one of their toners, then I massage in some essential oils and finish off with Skin Nanny, again from Lush. I'm very pleased with the results especially as I have quite sensitive skin.

These are very good,

Also Fresh Pharmacy and theres a coal base soap i use from LUSH but can't remember the name.

My skin is fairly ok, a little dry perhaps, very pale, so I use SPF in the summer, which in turn blocks my pores...grr. I am very happy with the Philosophy range, which I buy either from QVC shopping channel ( ) This is only when money is available. ...if not, I use Nivea soft white moisturiser, in the white tube, and Simple face wash...although this makes my eyes sting, but not my face. Spots on the chin can be a symptoms of hormonally things, so perhaps a hormone level check at the doctors? keep a diary of symptoms over he next couple of months in relation to your cycle, and see if anything corresponds. Hope your skin settle down, Lush products are also excellent, but I fine Philosophy, although the intial outlay is greater, lasts a long time!

Sari, I have used Philosophy for ages now and love it :D My skin has never been better and a few years ago my male boss even commented on it and asked me what I was using. I also got asked by an assistant in Boots once!

BTW there is a good seller on ebay that I use. Let me know if you want their user name.

I really wish I could just wash and go, but my face dries too much not to moisturise. I never use soap, and the moisturiser is either Nivea Q10 or am currently using Olay 7 signs one as it was on special offer.

I have funny skin and can't use Olay any more, and certainly not anything which claims to do more than just moisturise. I use Boots Expert moisturiser, it has no smell and just hydrates, and if you have points on a Boots card it's worth a go as it only costs around £4.50. I like Liz Earle style cleansers (Tesco and No7 do similar), but her moisturiser didn't do anything for my skin. I use a clear cleansing bar from Simple at the moment for washing and that appears to work fine.

I hope you find something that suits you!

I struggle to find skin care that suits my skin. After trying various creams, I use a basic Olay daily lotion (one of their el cheapo ones) and this seems to be doing a grand job and not upsetting my face.

I use a L'Occitane face wash, their olive oil one, which I've had for ages. I use a tiny amount, it doesn't lather up too much but it's great. Thing is, I have had it for so long I'm not sure if they still sell it! :D

I had a lot of spots in my teens through my oily skin. It has worked in my favour as I've got older though...decent skin & no wrinkles as yet!

It must be hormone related maybe, that you are getting spots. Go the docs & get a blood test done if you are worried...it could be the 1st stages of an early menopause. :anxious:
