Can we talk bras?

Recommended Posts

Moderators - I hope this is a suitable subject for the forum - but I don't know where else to tap into such a wealth of knoweldge.

I'm struggling to know what size I am. Years ago I went into a shop to buy a bra -size 42C - and the assistant took me aside and said, actually you are 38DD.So that's what I've remained - plus quite a bit of interest in the cup size with my love of food! And it seemed fine - my bras up until that point had rode up my back and been loose.

I've lost a bit of weight recently and thought maybe I need a smaller back size . I've learnt the proper back size is under-the-bust measurement PLUS 4" or 5"(for an odd number). I'm a strapping lass, and my ribcage measures 37" making my bra size a whopping 42". Is this correct? Have I been wearing the wrong size for 25 years?? 38" has been fine so far, but the online calculators say I'm 42" and my cup size is about 6 sizes smaller than I buy - I won't go into actual cup size as I'm a bit embarrassed.

Can anyone shine a light on this?

Another Bravissimo fan here, struggled for years to find proper fitting bras, but since finding Bravissimo years ago, have never been anywhere else. If you've got one near you, try to go during the week, when you don't need an appointment and you can spend as long (and as much!) as you like. My nearest shop is about 80 miles away so I don't tend to go very often, only when I think I've changed size. Their postal service is great too, with free returns, and fantastic advice over the phone. Ditch the measuring tape!

I wore the wrong size for years, thinking I was a 38C when I was actually a DD, I admit there was a fair bit under my arms that didn't fit in the bra  and the lady said to me "What do you think that is?" I said " It's fat isn't it?" and she said "No that's your breast and should be in your bra

Definitely go to a Bravissimo or a department store like John Lewis, their staff are really good at making sure you get the right size without even using a tape measure, and it's amazing what a difference wearing the correct size bra makes!

I agree, ditch the tape measure! If I use that method I also come out as a 42C when I'm actually a 38F!

If I lose or gain weight, it is the cup size that can fluctuate. I also recommend bravissimo, or somewhere where you ca go and try on several sizes.

Agreed - ditch the tape measure. And don't go to M&S for fitting either! For years they measured me as a 34C, then I went to John Lewis a couple of years ago (they fit in the same way as Bravissimo) and I was told I was actually a 30DD  The new bras did feel really tight for a few days until I got used to them, but the fit is soooo much better. I would always go back to JL now for fitting. In fact, a couple of days after getting the new bras a friend asked if I had lost weight - nope, just got a bra that fits properly at last!

Definitely ditch the tape measure - and forget about the "adding inches" malarkey. I'm another Bravissimo fan, definitely take the time to go.

If you have lost weight, then you will find that as your back size goes down, your cup size will go up. So if you were a 38DD, and you now find a 36 band fts better, then you will be more of a 36E now.

Once you have your size, be aware thsat different manufacturers come up differently When I get remeasured at Bravissimo, I try a range of manufacturers and styles. When I know what fits me, then I can buy the same brand in the new styles that are released each season (and not always from Bravissimo).

If you then decid to shop for own-label lingerie, be very aware that the cup sizesare not the same. For example, M&S goes from F to G, missing out FF... so their G is more of a FF really.

It's definitely worth taking a trip to see them, as you will also be able to try some of their clothing range. Even if you don't want to buy them, it's great to see what fits and how it fits (and they often come up - new - on Ebay later).

Good luck, hope to hear how you get on.

Witch-Hazel - I am very afraid I may have run out of letters in the alphabet if I go up a cup size  (faints)

Unlikely...if you were last estimated at a DD you have a looooooong way to go. Bravissimo offers E, F, FF, G, GG, H, HH, J, JJ, K.

When I was first properly measured (not by Bravissimo, actually, a one-shop place that was superb but now defunkt) I was wearing 42DD (as "measured" by M&S). They told me I was 36FF. I wanted to burst into tears. However, the bra fitted really well, and then Bravissimo came along and encouraged wonderful manufacturers like Freya and Fantasie to make really pretty bras, and I'm happy,

I'm 36G at the moment. At my slimmest I was 32H.

There seems to be a distinct lack of shops near me (Salisbury). The closest is Reading :( My friend went to Rigby & Pellor for her bridal underwear fitting and they do it by eye as well. They said she was a much bigger cup size than she always thought she was, and they were right!

Another huge Bravissimo fan here!

(was the pun intended? )

Nothing quite like being able to try on all those lovely bras (and then find knickers to colour match in M&S/Sainsburys etc cos they're cheaper - I don't mind spending £30-£40 on a bra that fits perfectly, but draw the line at £12 for ONE pair of knickers)

Peaches I'm a 40G  and my nieces think its hilarious (at 9 and 12 they've yet to learn about heredity and at least on of them is gonna have these boobs just like me nd my sis).

I'd love a little ribcage but I'll never be Cher.

BTW - thanks all - I'm also off to JL or Bravissimo soonest

I'm another Bravissimo fan even though I don't have huge boobs. My DD does and it was trying on one of her cast offs before she got really big that made me realise I'd been measuring myself at the wrong size. I thought I was a 34c but in fact I am/was 32DD. I've just ordered another couple of bras as I've ordered one in a bigger cup size as either I've shrunk my bras or I've got bigger.

I tend to find if I buy from places like Marks etc they are really uncomfortable once you've been wearing the bra for a time. So I'm better off buying a slightly more expensive bra than lots of cheaper ones, if that makes any sense.

I rate John Lewis too! I wore a 34 DD for years and went there and discovered I was really a 32 E or F ( depending on bra style). I am actually between a 30 and a 32 but 30 is waaaaay to tight for my liking! I have since fluctuated due to pregnancies, breast feeding, post breastfeeding (where I am now, and feeling a bit deflated :oops: ) etc etc. I think the real revelation was not only getting the right size but also the right style of bra. That feeling of absolute comfort is just bliss :D:lol:

Another bravissimo fanatic. How do they do it???? My weight fluctuates so my bra size varies (bizarrely it would seem as my cup stays the same) from a 30FF to 34FF Last time I went in the girl just looked and said you are a 34FF  The bra she got me was PERFECT

M and S, with their tape measure, once told me I was a 38A!!!!! My husband nearly died laughing as my melons are very obvious and far more than a handful, I'm sure the new work experience member of staff would of known different from the slightest glance.

Having the right size bra is so enlightening, you look slimmer, walk upright and hold yourself in a different way.

Another Bravissimo fan here, and also a fan of Debenhams as they have a lovely range of bras for bigger boobies which are a bit cheaper. I have been bra shopping today at Debenhams and came away with several new bras and matching knickers, the knickers were free if you brought the bra :D

Bravissimo and Debenhams measure me at either a 28G or 30 FF depending on the brand and style of the bra which look and fit great. M&S once tried to fob me off with a 34B :shameonu: which didn't fit at all and was so ugly and boring. Bravissimo and Debenhams have pretty, lacey, sexy, colourful bras, it is a shame they are hidden under clothing.

I sense a theme here...but I'm another Bravissimo fan  went in a 44DD came out a 38HH - amazing how good it feels to have a bra that fits properly! I haven't bought bras from anywhere else for years, although when I go I spend £100 + on them but I don't go that often
