AndyRoo
So, I may be 20... *coughs*plus*coughs* years late to the party, but today I got accepted on a degree course at Plymouth University! I'm so excited*. It's not cheap (£15k+) and the next 4 years of commitment, but I'm going to do it. *and also terrified.

It's actually in partnership with City of Bristol College, so other than (possibly) my final year I will actually be able to stay in the city. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm training to be a counsellor, so it'll be very rewarding once I'm qualified. I'd like to work with LGBT youth and victims of bullying. The statistics on attempted suicide and suicide in the LGBT community are absolutely astonishing, as are the statistics on bullying. I intend to be a little more well rounded than just those areas, but they are the ones that make me most passionate - apart from victims of racism. To be blunt, hate crimes at the minute are absolutely out of control, and I want to help readdress that balance. 9 minutes ago, soapdragon said: Go for it, chap! That's brilliant. AndyRoo
Thanks everyone. I'm really looking forward to it... I'm also scared to death of the thought! I'm just going through the process of organising a DBS check and, even though I've never done anything wrong in my life, I'm having a mild panic in case I've been mistaken for a namesake serial killer or something. lol
The Dogmother
That's brilliant Andy! You might like to connect with my daughter, who is at Edinburgh. Dismayed by the lack of support and resources for mental health issues at uni, and with the help of the faculty, they have set up a discussion and help space plus a facebook page for students. It's also focused on LGBT wellbeing. She'd love to hear from you.

SEVENTH!?!? What are you studying? That has to be something like medicine, right? I'm doing this one so it'll be three years as opposed to 2 (foundation) and then I can do another year to 'top-up' to a full bachelors degree. Unless I decide to specialise, that'll be it. But I have the option to do a masters etc. afterwards. As we're planning to move to France in the next 5-6 years, it could well be that I just use this as a platform to find a different job out there... but I'd like to use it if I can. I wish I had the kind of brain for something like that. I'll have to settle for a non-medical helping role instead.

And at some point during this period I wanted to find time to adopt. lol
AndyRoo
It's official: I'm doing the degree. I sorted my student finance and my enhanced DBS check came back totally clear! I didn't have any reason to suspect it wouldn't, but it's one of those things where you automatically think you're going to be in trouble even knowing you haven't done anything wrong. YAAAAAAY!!
Grandmashazzie
Good on you, it will also help if your adopt. I sometimes wish I had counselling degree.

Well, yes... that will hopefully help. Although by the time I finish my degree I'll be 40 and Rich will be 42, so we may have missed the window on that. I also have an interest in forensic/criminal psychology, so I was thinking I *might* like to go on and do that too. Depends what I end up doing. Grandmashazzie
Don’t think that age would be issue, they are desperate for adopters ( and foster careers ) for older children. We are 62 and our four are placed long term ( hope we last long enough 😀) andthey are 12,8, 7 and 6. It is quite a long process though so it may be something to start exploring once you get settled on course.
