Geoid
I can't belive it, a girl got run over, outside my school. The whole road is closed off now. I hope its not someone I know **Update** The girl IS from my school (alot of schools in my area) but, she is in another year, so I dont know her. Its very scary, this is the second time someone from my school has been involed in a traffic collision. the first time, I knew the boy, and he sadly died Edited September 24, 2007 by Guest

Jules.
I read somewhere that the age group most likely to be knocked down by a car are the early teens.
Geoid
That is awful Can anything be done to improve safety outside your school? Yes LOTS can be done to improve saftey, but the cheap council wont do anything
Mrs Frugal
It's been 10 years since a 6 year old in Tom's class was knocked over and had his leg broken trying to cross the road but the primary school up the road have finally managed to get zigzags painted outside on the road and a 20mph limit imposed. The councils can be so slow to bring in these safety features .

DizzyLizzie
What and awful thing to happen! When I take my little boy to school the traffic is a nightmare - i have to cross 2 very busy roads and 2 quieter ones. Outside the school the cars race up and down the road and NOONE stops to let you cross - in fact they don't even slow down if you are already crossing. Not to mention the PARENTS THAT PARK ON THE ZIG ZAGS - Don't do it. Your children may be nice and safely dropped off outside the school gates but all the OTHER children (and their parents/siblings) are in danger. Rant over. Hate the walk to school - can't wait till we move house!
Geoid
The problem is, My school is next to the Great West Road, 4 Lanes of super fast traffic, no one stops, the crossing doesnt work proplery etc, and all the council has done is put up one tiny sign that says "school" and thats it. Yet the council is paying millions to change the colour of their logo!
DizzyLizzie
I know what you mean - they can't get a crossing person for outside the school and they haven't put a zebra or other pedestrian crossing outside (which would be perfect). And today there were three people sitting outside the school COUNTING CARS to see how many use the road and come out of the junction We asked one what the outcome would be and apparently it depends what the council considers should be done (if anything ). The laugh is that they couldn't park their cars because the traffic was so bad
chickencam
The primary mine have all been to is at the top of a long cul-de-sac and ever since my eldest started there the headmaster has asked in every newsletter for people please not to park up there. It is a narrow road and when the children are arriving and leaving they step into the road and all the selfish people that go up there drive too fast. Amazingly there have only been a couple of min or incidents in that time.It is incredible that parents are prepared to take risks with their childrens safety for the sake of not walking a few extra steps. Leicester_H
Not to mention the PARENTS THAT PARK ON THE ZIG ZAGS - Don't do it. This is a MAJOR bug bear of mine and I don't even have children. There are several schools near my house. If I'm on my bike I have stopped and 'told parents off' for parking on the zig-zag lines. They say its 'only for a minute' while THIER child is being picked up. They seem to have no sence. I would like parents to take some responsibility for this. Take photo's of illegally and/or dangerously parked cars and publish them on a web site - NAME & SHAME persistent offenders. Its NOT just a matter of money. Snowy
We live on a cul de sac off the road that the school is on. It's always a nightmare trying to get to work (Unfortunately I leave the house at five to nine). Sometimes I can't get my car out of the drive, then there are cars parked all around the corners where the two roads meet. Now little one has started school, obviously we walk as it's just across the road, but even then, although there is no zebra crossing, there are marked crossing areas (can't see the point of those myself but that's another rant) and they park across those! Yesterday I crashed my bag into the front of one woman's car as it was halfway into the crossing area - she was just sat in the car nattering through the open window! I should've just kicked the car and had done with it. I'm turning into a grumpy old woman.
Charlottechicken
I live 100 yards from a primary school. At 8.50am the road grinds to a halt due to children being dropped off for school. They park (I use that term loosely ) everywhere (isn't that what the zig zags in front of the school are for ) in their people carriers, it is impossible to move a vehicle from 8.50 to 9.10 and the same at the end of the school day. I think what annoys me the most is that almost all of the children live within a mile of the school, and although most are slim, they won't be if they continue to be driven everywhere. Maybe if they had to walk home too they would be less "hyper" Two days ago I witnessed a people carrier park near my house, and a mother with two girls got out. The mum proceeded to finish dressing the girls as they walked towards the school, the smaller of the two was still half asleep . The time was 9.05, school starts at 9am
Louise
Why aren't children allowed to walk to school by themselves any more I had to go about a mile each way to primary school and we just did it I can't think of anybody that got driven to primary school Secondary school we all got the bus
Geoid
I cycle 5.4 miles to school and back each day, and the school traffic is soo bad, that there are queues for about a mile. and some $%^&*( nearly ran me over as he had parked on the pavement and just suddenly pulled out, no indicators or nothing, makes me
red
You can be very vulnerable as a cyclist - my husband used to cycle to work every day and had a number of accidents all the fault of careless drivers - on one occassion he was thrown from his bike by a car crossing the cycle lane he was using. Fortunately he did not receive serious injuries - probably because of his cycle helmet. My tip: - Make sure you wear a cycle helmet (Or do what my hubby has done and start working from home!!)
