Louise
I have signed up but I have also left a comment on the legislation covering inports of cheap rubbish from abroad my feeling is that unless we stop and or restrict it there is little point in this campaign as supermarkets and ready meal producers will continue to use it and the general public no matter what they say they want will still buy it

Joojoo
Me too If only people thought a little bit more about where their meat came from and the quality of it's short life instead of saving a couple of £s on their weekly shopping
Christian
All signed! After seeing Hugh's programme on the telly, where the broiler chicken farmer received less than 3p per chicken, I have not bought anything other than free range! ubereglu
I have signed up too and left a comment saying it should also talk about the farmer's view on this way of farming and why they have to do it to make a living.

If you read a lot of the back of packets in the supermarkets a lot of the chicken comes from Holland or Argentina or Brazil. I bet the majority of the buying public dont even realise! I only buy british as that keeps my hubby in a job!!
Dancing Gal
There's absolutely no need for all this cheap meat in a rich country like this one. It's about time we returned to a country that sold good quality fresh, ethically treated produce, rather than all the mass produced "Ooops, word censored!" food available everywhere. It's no wonder we are becoming an obese nation with the amount of food we can buy, consume and throw away. I know so many people (and I am just as guilty) who load up the supermarket trolley with pounds and pounds worth of cheap food, only for it to end up in the dustbin because we don't really need it, but we buy it because we can. Rhapsody
I totally agree with Louise at al on this one; when the petition about battery hens came up a few months ago here this was the main thrust of my thread- it is pointless to impose on British farmers standards of welfare that only apply to them which inevitably push the production price up. Imports will flood in and undercut domestic producers- an import ban on meat which does not conform to a certain welfare standard is the only way forward but no poltical party will ever have the cojones to put that into practise I'm afraid. Us lovely folk on Omlet may have compassion and ethics at the top of our shopping lists but we are not in the majority.
Snowy
When I was in Brittany nearly every farm had a chicken barn. Speaking to one chap he admitted most are exported to the UK and that any law banning battery farming in the UK would only benefit his business. Louise
That is the point I am trying to make Rhapsody We already have farmers stretched to breaking with welgfare legislation and they then can't sell their products for a decent profit because they are competing with cheap "Ooops, word censored!"y imports I always try to buy british and where not possible I buy for decent countries ie I would buy New Zealand lamb
chelsea
hubby said today that he thinks the company he works for may be stopping "standard chicken" altogether which is the type in the normal broiler houses. the company currently does standard, free range and organic and slowly but surely the demand for the latter 2 are growing which means hopefully they will stop the standard. They are a large producer to major supermarkets/brands so if they stopped it maybe others will follow suit.
