Oh dear we've been here before I will not sign. Why? Because if we impose this kind of welfare standard on UK produce in isolation, cheap imports will flood our market and put our farmers out of business. Here on Omlet we may value welfare standards above all else but we are not a majority. The average consumer will continue to buy on price alone,and Uk British poultry will stand out as an expensive product, so they will buy cheaper from abroad (food miles! Welfare standards!). It has already happened with British veal (anyone seen any on the shelves lately?). I will support a ban coupled with a ban on intensive imports with pleasure, but the economics of EU trade probably mean this is a pipe dream.

Who was it on her who said they were in France this year where broiler farmers are rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of a UK ban and the profits it will bring them.....?

I agree with Rhapsody on this one. I think all of us here would like to see a time when battery hens are part of the past and all animals free-range in happy, healthy conditions, but banning would have wider, deeper consequences, and at the end of the day, if it will result in imports, it's a useless effort and a useless success cause whether a hen suffers in the UK or in France, doesn't make much difference, it's still a suffering animal.

 

I really liked the website of the battery hen welfare trust, their attitude to farmer and the changes that should be brought and how, is very well balanced and taking the farmers' situation into account as well as the animals, which is admirable. Everywhere on their website comes the line 'we need to support farmers'... There are also many tips on there as to how to campaign with stores and food manufacturers to pressure them slowly into changes... I believe it will be better for everyone if things go slow and steady and efforts are made that respect farmers and their need to make a living too. After all, they supply battery eggs because people buy them and want cheap eggs. More needs changing, in people's mentality, than just a sudden ban on battery hens...

 

Dont get me wrong, I'm all for free hens... I just think it should be done the right way, and giving support to farmers to make differences.

I agree with the sentiments, but I also won't sign, much as I'd love to see battery farming cease. It was me that was in France and everywhere we went there were battery units, even on the smaller farms - they all had them. And yes, they export most of their produce to the UK

The only way to stop this is to buy nothing but free range eggs and egg products and encourage everyone you know to do the same.

 

Are you all aware that the Co-op is moving to free range only in all it's own brand products? That's where I shop now!

I'm afraid I share the same sentiments as Rhapsody, Ziggy & Snowy. I don't think that a ban will serve any purpose other than to make UK farmers suffer unecessarily, and open a floodgate for cheap EU imports. I agree wholeheartedly with the idea of banning batery farming (I've done several battery hen rescues with the BHWT......... I've been inside the farms ), but the farmers are merely making a living satisfying the demand for cheap eggs, and they are entitled to a living every bit as much as anyone else.

I make my stand by only buying free range eggs, and that includes the hidden egg, no cheap ice-cream, pasta or mayonnaise, for example, here, and I do my damndest to encourage friends and family to take the same stance, often people simply aren't aware of the hidden egg problem.

I support British farmers.......... maybe I don't like all their practices, but still better British than imported

I thought long and hard about this...and in the end I signed up. Because, I believe that you can tell how civilised a society/culture is by the way they treat animals/poultry. Although I totally understand the problem with cheap imports from Europe, I feel we should lead by example, but it is an issue fraught with problems. As I understand it, and I am sure there are people on this forum who know far more about this than I do, so I am open to correction...the only way to ensure that the meat/poultry you buy is kindly farmed from cradle to grave is to buy organic with the 'organic' stamp on it. A lot of free range products maybe have a more reasonable life but the transportation for these animals is a complete nightmare, cruel beyond. Proper 'organically' reared animals have a much kinder life including transportation issues. I can't afford to buy 'organic' meat very often, but I would rather have a £12 chicken once a month than a £2.99 battery chicken once a week.

 

I should be a vegetarian really
