how many chickens do you have in your cube?

Recommended Posts

I've got (pausing to think for a minute) 15, but only eight of them are what you would call fullsize, the rest are mini-chooks. I've been allowing for a certain amount of dropping off perches, and am not planning on getting any more for a year or so now, as my ideal number is around a dozen. Our two oldest girls don't lay very much now, but they have all just moulted, and it takes a while for them to get back into it. They are around two and a bit.

If I were you, I would have four rather than two. Then if you lose one (it does happen) you still have three. Which is a good number.

If you are going for 2 (or 3 or 4) Then why not get an eglu with a run convertor?

I have 2 eglus (one with 2 chickens in, standard run and One with 3 chickens in, converted run)

Quite often they all sleep in one eglu but i need the two eglus for when i work away from home and they are confined to the runs for a couple of days.

And yes, they do lay less the older they get.

I would get at least 3 new chickens as Aunty E says. :D:D

All the best

I would agree with what everyone else has said. The cube really is a big sleeping area for just 2. I've got 4 and am planning to get some more soon as I've become addicted. It's best to not just get two anyway as if one dies the other one will be left on its own. Good luck with what you decide. There's so many exciting chickens to chose from when you start looking into it. Maybe getting a blue egg layer too will persuade you to go for at least 3!!! The chickens themselves are the cheapest thing you'll buy and I bet your friends and neighbours would love any extra eggs.

Yes, I think that 2 chooks may be a little lost in a Cube. I have 6 in mine and there is easily room for another 4 at bedtime - it is only the size of the run that is stopping me from getting them! I agree with everyone else that you should get at least 3 if possible.

We have six in our cube, I reckon the Cube will sleep ten to twelve easily, the standard run however is probably not big enough for six, we have had a few problems with feather pecking etc, which I put down to the size of the run. Not such a problem if you can let them free range in the garden a lot. Ours had a lot of freedom in the summer whilst Cathy was off (teacher) once we were both back at work and the ladies were confined to barracks we had a few problems, all sorted now thanks this forum :D

Four would be a nice number with a standard run, the shape of our garden does not lend it self to having multiple Omlet run extensions, so I am going to move the greenhouse and build a walk in one instead. (Cathy likes this Idea cos she wants some ex-batts too!)

So I guess what I'm saying is, six in a cube is fine if you are around to let them play out a lot.

If you are out all day go for four.

7 in ours and room to spare, but as 4 of them are Brahmas and aren't fully grown until 18 months I'm holding out to see how much bigger they get

Really hoping I can get some more

Or talk my hubby into an eglu - we have a large walk-in run so space for them isn't a problem

seven in my Cube (Georgie sleeps in separate accomodation). Mine are big hens and I wouldn't put more than another couple.

Mind you, thats assuming none sleep in the nest box (none of mine do - funny that, when Georgie and Doris were in the Eglu one always slept in the nest box).
