Gamebird
I am so sorry Poet. It sounds as though he had a very peaceful passing. It's good to know you have lots of good, happy memories of him. My father died 16 years' ago and I still miss him but when I think of him it always makes me smile. Guest
I am really sorry to hear your news Poet. It is a sad and difficult time for those left behind, but an important one too. I love that passage about the ship and find it so helpful to think that he - and others- is being welcomed on another shore just as warmly as he is welcomed on this side. Guest
thank you all. He loved ships. I remember the airing cupboard would be full of copies of 'ships monthly' and 'sea breezes' when I was little, he never threw any out and they'd quite often tumble on top of you when you opened the door If I can manage it, not sure I can actually I'll try and read that poem at the funeral. We're scattering his ashes on The Mersey. We thought he'd like to keep an eye on the comings and goings at the docks.

That sounds like a lovely thoughtful last thing to do for him. I do hope it goes well.
Guest
Poet - I'm so very sorry to hear your sad news. I too lost my Dad and I know how hard it can be. We too were sent a poem when he went - we had it read out at the funeral as it gave us great comfort. God looked around his garden And found an empty place, He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest. God's garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your weary eyelids And whispered, 'Peace be Thine'. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn't go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home. My thoughts are with you at this sad time. Ms Marple
Please accept our condolences at thes difficult time Poet. Keep the positive memories vivid. This is a favourite in our house. My eldest read it at his Grandfather's funeral as my OH was too distraught. Like the other two poems mentioned it paints a lovely picture. Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there, I did not die. Edited November 15, 2008 by Guest
