Redwing
I did 'something' (note the medical term!) to my back whilst filling a watering can the other night. I have been first bedbound and now sofa bound by the pain for three days now Not being one to go to the doctors or being one to be off work sick unless my head is hanging off this is driving me crazy! I am not bored as I have the forum just really frustrated at moving and it being so painful and being tanked up on painkillers but them not really helping I had a weekend of hard graft planned too - I havent got time to be ill! Just wanted to vent my anger rant over. Thanks
Egluntyne
Sorry to hear it Redwing. I did similar a couple of years ago and it isn't funny. A TENS machine helped enormously. So did 5 days of Valium to stop the muscle spasm.
Valkyrie
Oooh been there too. The worst pain I have ever had. Take some Ibuprofen to ease the swelling - sounds like you might have to do the hospital trip. They wouldn't do X-rays when I did mine because the swelling hadn't gone down enough (not that it was visible!) and I might have been pregnant - in spite of me insisting I wasn't. Turned out one of my discs has narrowed - just slightly - and the cartilage or whatever it was had worn leaving the discs to rub against each other. All I did was reach over to clean the other side of the bath! Well it has gone well and truly a couple of times after that, but the last time the doctor recommended a chiropractor that he knew and trusted. Saw him and never looked back (pardon the pun - not intended). I know the warning signs now and if I feel it could misbehave, I take a couple of ibuprofen at bedtime and it's OK by morning. Get thee to a doctor ASAP just in case you've slipped it or something. Meanwhile I shall send some gentle hugs and hope you improve soon. Ana's flock
It's nasty when things like that happen. I'm not a doctor and the only things I can think of to help are a nice hot bath with some muscle relaxant aromatherapy oils and lots of rest (I'm like you regarding going to the doctors and I also hate taking medication unless I'm holding my head under my arm...) I got told off a few years ago when I refused to go to hospital when, after picking up a piece of Lego I collapsed on the floor with the worst stabbing back pain of my life... I crawled to bed and took it easy for a couple of days - then I was fine (except for a cronic case of Legophobia! ) Doing nothing it's boring, especially if you had things planned, but this weekend is going to pour with rain so it won't be nice to be pottering around outside anyway. Ask a family member to get you a few books and have a go at relaxing. I get the feeling this is one of the 'subtle' ways our body has to communicate it needs more rest... I hope you recover really soon - apparently the weather is going to improve from Tuesday
stoice
I did similar a few months ago (Mine was by slipping on my slimy decking though) In fact I was the one who started the thread about waiting for doctor appointments. Get yourself an emergency dr appointment if you can't be seen within a day or two - you're in pain and pain is an emergency. The Doc prescribed me stronger NSAID medication (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs). He said there was a possibility I had chipped a bone and asked if I could be bothered with an x-ray (Considering how tricky it was just to see a doctor? I don't think so!) but in the end we both thought it was just muscular. Back was feeling a little better after the Dicloflex (A type of volterol) kicked in. He also advised mild exercise like walking instead of bed rest as it'll seize up more. (easier said than done when you're in pain). It took about two weeks for the twinges and spasms to go away and six weeks to be back to normal (Sorry if this depresses you) In the mean time, continue with the ibuprofen (A weaker NSAID) and have this **HUG** from me. xxx
Redwing
Thanks guys! Next door have offered a loan of a tens machine so I will give that a go. My brother had a slipped disc a while back and had similar pain, he lost 4 stone to ease the constant pain, I like Double Deckers too much to try that treatment besides as my husband so eloquently puts it to me 'you losing four stone would be like throwing a deckchair off the Titanic' charming!! Will take a shuffle down to the chickens in a bit to keep mobile then (avoiding all Lego obviously Ana )
ClaireG
Ouch. Hope your feeling better soon Tasha. Have you got one of those wheat bag thingies you can put in the microwave or a hot water bottle? That might help a bit.

Seagazer
Oh I hope the pain goes away soon. My dear OH put his back into muscle spasms in December (he was trying to lift the dog up for some reason ). It was very painful. I think he got some strong painkillers from the doctor which really helped.

Tiggy
sounds painful : a trip to the GP may be in order if your are not getting better in a few days taking painkillers & Ibuprofen we dont do xrays as a rule because they often don't tell us anything useful, and give you the equlivent of several years radiation, keep moving, take things easy, and as general useful info:- danger signs, loss of feeling in legs, unable to control blader or bowel, numbess between your anus & privates - see a Dr NOW. mostin
Oooch. I hope you feel better soon. I had never hurt my back before 3 weeks ago and didn't understand what everybody went on about when they did. I heard a very loud click when I was lifting a bale of hay for the chickens . I managed to struggle through in a haze of codeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen. I would say it's finally easing now. I hope yours is over soon. Just try and relax, I found one of those wheat bags really helped get heat to the right spot.
jlo
I am really sorry to hear about your back. It is amazing how common back problems are isn't it!? I suffer a lot with my back and go and see a briliiant chiropractor who sorts me out when I do daft things. It is the most debilitating pain though and I send some virtual hugs and hopes that it goes soon! Edited May 16, 2009 by Guest
theherd123
Sorry to hear you are not feeling great, back pain is just the worst isnt it?! Have you tried those heat wraps? Blackrocksrock
Ouch - hope it eases with the tens machine - try a hot water bottle in bed too as they can give great relief or the microwavable ones/wheat bags.
chickencam
I feel for you I have had problems with my upper back for quite a few years which were made acutely worse by reaching out to catch a vase I had knocked on the mantlepiece when I was vacuuming. We have a brilliant self referal system to the physiotherapy department locally. After my back problems getting progressively worse at the end of last year I went to the doctors and they told me about this and gave me the number. The therapist that I have been seeing has made a remarkable difference to me. It may be worth a visit to your GP to see if anything similar is available in your area. In the meantime take care. Helly Welly
As someone who is pretty much constantly in pain, i would definately go to the GPs for some stronger painkillers. Codeine based painkillers are good for me. Also use heat, either wheat bags or hot water bottles. I have mini hot water bottles that i can stuff inside my clothes if necessary. I must be the only person in the world who goes out with a hot water bottle stuffed down her trousers I also love my tens machine, use it as much as you need to, it's impossible to overdose on it. Micropore tape can help keep the pads in place for longer. Try and do some gentle movemen each day, i know it's hard when it hurts but it's important to stay mobile. I hope it feels better soon, <<<>>>
