Seagazer
I gave one to the OH for Christmas and he loves it. Quite apart from the whole book thing, it has a built-in free 3G connection and a prototype web browser which effectively means free internet (albeit slow and a little awkward to use)He mostly uses it to show pictures of our baby on Facebook to his work colleagues! The only annoyances are the cost of ebooks. They should be a tiny fraction of the cost of a printed book, but they're rarely more than 10 % less, although there are quite a few free books out there. I also bought him a case for it. It seemed a little delicate without it. I bought one of these. I thought it looked very classy and 'bookish.' Hubby agrees. I really like the look of this cover. Is it scratchy though?
abwsco
Nearly persuaded DH that he should be getting one for his birthday BUT there is such a small selection of books available (2nd world war history) that it's just not worth it
Seagazer
I've got a feeling my hubby is buying me one for my birthday soon. I've dropped a few hints
Cinnamon
My replacement is here already - hows that for quick service?
TheFeatheredFiend
I bought one of these. I really like the look of this cover. Is it scratchy though? Not in the slightest. It looks like it might be scratchy like sack-cloth but it's actually nice and soft. I liked the cover I got for DH's kindle so much that I got the equivalent cover for my iPad too! Seagazer
Thanks TheFeatheredFiend - (I had to look twice as I thought it said friend)
mini welly
I have a kindle; in fact my whole family does. I love it. Yes! Get a cover too, makes it look funky.
Seagazer
A box from a certain company arrived this morning with a Kindle inside for me courtesy of my OH. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to have it for a couple of weeks. Gives me time to look at covers. He only showed the box to me as I'd been having a sneaky look to see what hubby was getting me
Cinnamon
My replacement cover came yesterday - the light is really good & very discreet when you don't want to use it. The whole cover is heavier than the unlit one though......think I may invest in a waterproof one to take on holiday with me
Seagazer
Is the lighted cover needed do you think?
TheFeatheredFiend
Is the lighted cover needed do you think? Depends on where to like to read. You need about the same amount of light to read the Kindle as you do to read a paper book, so if you like to read in bed you'll need your bedside light on. If you want to read without a light on, then you'll need a booklight or the illuminated cover.
Cinnamon
Thats right. I got on perfectly well with mu unlit cover, but if I do pull a 3am'er my husband sleeps like a log & my bedside light doesn't disturb him at all. I am not sure how much I will use my light. It looks to me as if the unlit Amazon covers are no longer on the Amazon site anyhow.......although others are.
Snowy
I bought a cheap £13 cover off ebay. It came with a little clip on light which is perfect, I can easily read now without the bedside light on and it doesn't disturb OH. It looks similar to the official amazon ones - purple leatherette! I couldn't justify the £50 for one of those!
Cinnamon
I wouldn't have paid that either - I was lucky to get one for free
CatieB
I paid for the lit one and imho its worth every penny. It gives just the right amount of light to read by in bed with no harshness or glare. I love it
Seagazer
Thanks for that I shall have a ponder for a bit on it. I do normally read in bed with the bedside light on. My OH can sleep through anything so would probably not need the light.
mini welly
I have a green cover, HellyWelly (mum) has a red and dad has black The light is really useful, although it does use up a lot of battery life
Christian
My Mum is retiring in a couple of weeks and buying herself a kindle as a leaving present. Will borrow hers to see what it's like. I LOVE books, but this would be easier for traveling.
Chucky Mama
I had a look at the Cash Converters website at the weekend and notice that there is a Kindle sold there for £79 + postage. New Sony touch readers are being auctioned from £50 but I don't know how much then go for. It is such an underused website they may go quite cheaply. TheFeatheredFiend
I don't know how much CashConverter's delivery would be, but assuming it's around £5 I'm not sure if I'd pay £85 for second hand when a new basic third gen Kindle is only £26 more including delivery with a year's full warranty. Is the second hand one third gen? and is it the basic wireless one or the one with whispernet?
Chucky Mama
I agree, I don't know that I would risk it with the Kindle although it does say that they are new and would presumably come with a warranty (wouldn't buy without checking). The Sony touch reader is also new and at £50 is more tempting. Haven't yet followed one through auction though so don't know how much they fetch. Sheilaz
....Apparently the issue I had with my machine has been common with people using the Amazon leather cover with no light. It hasn't been a problem with the lighted covers. The problem I had was that on 3 occasions in the last 10 days I went to switch it on to find the green light already on. I then had to fully charge it & reboot it for it to start working....... Well, I'm glad yours was replaced efficiently, that's great. I'm still wondering about mine, since I posted about it being unexplicably "off" and needing recharging. Since then I have been reading a weighty tome (that sadly wasn't avaiable as an ebook), so I hadn't picked up the Kindle. Now LSH is away & putting it to the test, and seeing if it stays charged. When I gave it to him to pack, it needed charging first, although we hadn't used it, not sounding good is it? Mine is with an unlit Amazon holder, but I can't understand why that would make it faulty, do you know what it does to it? I'll find out in a fortnight whether LSH is or with it. For anyone still deciding, I immediately wished I'd bought the backlit cover, it depends where you read it, but it would have been best for me. TheFeatheredFiend
it needed charging ... although we hadn't used itAre you remembering to switch wireless off? Even if you're not using it, the wireless eats power and you only need it on when you're looking for and downloading books or using the web browser (on Whispernet-enabled versions). With wireless off, an unused Kindle will last literally months without going flat. Sheilaz
That's a really good point, thank you. When our Kindle comes home I'll give it a thorough test, with that in mind. I gave it to LSH as a present, but I think we need one each!
