My mum died without me being there, she too deteriorated very quickly at the end but was in a home where people cared about her so I found comfort in that knowldedge, in time. Don't feel bad that you weren't there, he may still have waited until you'd gone out of the room before slipping away - the important thing is the love and care you showed him while he was alive. My Mum seemed to pick up before passing away so that came as a shock too but they are not suffering any more only those left behind. Take care of your self. I wasn't with my stepmother when she died last year - I'd spent many hours sitting with her but I was on my way to visit when we had the phone call to say she'd gone - it was almost as if she needed to do it that way.
