Pekin Babes - new pics

Recommended Posts

My babies are all grown up - although no sign of any eggs yet! The hybrids are laying like mad, but not these little ladies. Good job they are cute, eh?

We started with their eglu and the run on the lawn, but as the winter progressed and the ground got wetter, they spent more and more time in the eglu :( Obviously didn't suit them. So I partitioned off the walk in run and moved the eglu into there. Much better! And of course they have been eyeball to eyeball with the big girls all winter

So today I gave them their freedom:

At first they stayed in the big run, but a bit of Kippensnoep sprinkled about aroused their curiosity.

Ping was out first, closely followed by Mimi, while Lulu hid behind the post:

Just a little peep out to see if the big girls are still watching:

Oooh, they are still there, better hide:

Mean Stanley chased them back in again:

But as soon as her back is turned, out for some more yummy Kippensnoep. Lulu stays by the eglu and pretends that it really is not the tastiest thing she has ever had:

Getting brave and standing their ground (well, all except Lulu who is still hiding):

Can I just ask what is 'kippensnoep' ? Jx

Chicken snacks (although that is probably not an accurate translation) made by Garvo, contains grains and dried insects - they love it! 8) My pekins are fussy and refuse to eat normal treats (pasta, porridge etc) but they go mad for stuff you can scatter on the ground, especially this!

Edited to add - brilliant, just used Google translate and it comes up as Chicken Candy! How appropriate 8)

I intend to merge them Chrissie - they all went to bed in their correct places last night and I did debate leaving the partition open, but will give it a bit longer. They are not laying yet, but are crouching and getting a bit more confident. At the moment they are still a bit wary and I am not confident that they would stand up for themselves if the biggys did launch an attack! I could leave them as they are, but if one does go broody, I will need the dividing mesh panels to make a broody run 8)

Ping is a Mille Fleur. Gorgeous colour isn't it? I'd always wanted one but when I got these they were only tiny and I couldn't tell what colour they were going to turn out. Am delighted with Pings colour obviously! 8) Mimi is blue, rather than lavender, and Lulu is mottled.
