Prolapse

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd share my activities of the last few days as I've had a bit of a triumph with a hen with a prolapse.

Last Wed a friend texted me to say that she had a hen with a prolapse, and could I have a look at it.

It was dropped off by her husband, and the prolapse was enormous and dark purple. I was minded to cull the hen, but thought I'd give her a chance, so....

I bathed the area with a weak saline solution 4 times a day for the first 3 days, and three times a day thereafter, and applied runny honey to the prolapse each time.

I initially applied the vet bandage and pad as described in the FAQ, but she managed to escape three times, and nearly strangled herself in the process, so I abandoned the idea.

Over the next few days, part of the prolapse went black and scabbed over, but we carried on.

I kept her in the dark, in a carrying crate, and on minimal rations, no pellets, just grains and mealworms. Her appetite was poor and she was reluctant to drink, so I syringed water into her for a couple of days.

Two days ago, when I was cleaning her up, the sloughy area fell off, and she turned round and ate it! No manners whatsoever.

Yesterday there was no sign of the prolapse at all. Everything has gone back in of its own accord, I haven't pushed it back.

Today she is ravenous, skinny and very chirpy. She's going home tomorrow.

She did lay one egg four days ago, and luckily, it didn't cause the prolapse to worsen.

I think we've been lucky because it was caught straight away, before any of her flatmates started pecking it.

We are going to keep her on junk food for a couple of weeks to let her insides heal fully.

Fingers crossed.

Well done :D

Dealing with a lot of hybrids I saw a few nasty prolapses last year but glad to hear a success story.

I think Dappy Chick recently had success treating a prolapse by spraying it with Vetericyn, which may have helped. She's waiting to see and try it again if needs to, to see if it really was that which helped!

Hi, just wondering whether the hen ever laid again?

I successfully treated a prolapse a month ago... other than missing some feathers around her vent that she pulled out herself during the event, she's now acting perfectly normally. However, she has't laid an egg since it happened. Just wondering whether hens can ever lay again post prolapse?

Thankyou.
