Elbow Op- Healing hugs needed!!

Recommended Posts

Went to hospital last Wednesday as ‘day case’ – had op on right elbow – surgeon said it went well. Was in a LOT of pain in recovery so they gave me extra pain relief via IV – this made no difference so gave me ‘large’ dose of oral morphine. This didn’t do much either but they took me back to the ward. They ‘made’ me eat a sandwich before I could get out of bed – this made me feel queasy so they gave me IV anti-nausea drug. Went to bathroom and nearly collapsed due to low BP (apparently this can happen after oral morphine) so had to lie flat for about an hour. Surgeon decided I had to stay in overnight for observation. Turned out to be a good call as at 2am I was very sick for at least 30 mins – so much so, nurse insisted on giving different anti-nausea drug (IM) in top of leg (left a HUGE bruise) – this worked and I felt a lot better and got to sleep by about 3am. Was woken at 6am for obs! After I’d proved I could keep some toast down I was allowed home mid-morning . Not too bad now, but large compression bandage on elbow means I can’t bend it, which is quite restricting. Pain killers are good – but strong – make my head spin! Now have to wait 12 weeks for it to recover full use – hopefully will get quite a lot of use back before that as 12 weeks takes me to mid January.

Healing hugs needed!!

OMG  I went through a bout of throwing up yesterday (the first time it was all over the cat :shock::shock: )and still don't feel A1. However, compared to your experiences I am obviously in perfect health :D I am sending you lots of healing hugs. I've just had a healing mug of horlicks, strange what you fancy when you are ill. I expect your body is going to take a while to get used to having all those strong meds in it, so I expect you will feel rotten for a while yet. I hope there is somebody about to help take care of you, I don't suppose you can do much with one straight arm. I would do a bit more lying down if I were you. Duvet, radio, ipad, ipod, TV whatever and send the butler out for more tea and toast. I do hope you feel a bit better very soon.

Crikey Hazel, you have certainly been through the mill  Good job they did insist on keeping you in that night- would have been grim for all that to have happened at home and then have to go back in again :x

The worst is over - things can only get better! :D Good vibes coming your way from rural Oxfordshire!!! Let us know how you go!

Thanks all - just not used to this sort of thing !

Surprising how tired even a small op can make me.

Also, just don't know how much pain is 'normal'.

Not better yet - but getting there - if anyone can suggest any decent day-time TV that would be great (but impossible I suspect!!).

Left hand typing only!!

Hi Hazel, big healing hugs from here x

Re tv suggestions - I sky plus loads of things and series link them, so if, for example you like Countdown, you could record it everyday. I go through phases of what I like to record. I used to record Come Dine with Me, but got thoroughly fed up with it (eventually!) or catch up with the reruns of the Sopranos on sky Atlantic, it's just started from the beginning and is only up to the 4th episode ish.

How about joining on online DVD company, one that sends you out DVDs. You could work your way through all the movies with Steve Martin in, or other actor that you like. You could watch a whole series of 24, or the Wire,. You could record breakfast tv and watch it at a more civilised hour ;-)

Am resisting the urge to say "all power to your elbow in your recovery". (Sorry) :D
doh !!

Am dreading tomorrow - have to see surgeon (OK) but first the nurse - think they will be removing final layer of dressing.

We had to remove compression bandage a few days ago - took ages as every layer was stuck with blood and pulled as it came off (even soaked with water).

Left with thin 'plaster' (not a plaster but not sure of correct name) - it is soaked in blood - I just hope nurses have a magic way of removing it with NO pain !!!
