The World Cup - Love it or Loathe it?

Recommended Posts

Have to say that, as non footie fans, its all getting a bit too much. Seems to be taking over everything  People decorating their houses with flags/posters etc my reaction....get a grip; its only a game :shameonu: Will be glad when its over/we are out and we can all forget the hype  !

Or am I being a humbug  What are others feelings on the manic reactions? Don't get me wrong...I am as patriotic as the next person but the over reaction is totally OTT (IMHO!)

Very glad when it's over!

Streets are completely covered in orange flags and yesterday I had running and screaming people on the streets. People lighting fireworks and everthing...

I really wanted to go to bed early, but the fans just wouldn't shut up. And the chicken ladies weren't too happy with all the noise either. :(

We like a bit of footie here and we have just one flag up in the garden. We watched the opening match and will watch the game tonight, but we won't obsess over it. My DS gets quite stressed watching and I used to be like that but after many years of disappointment I tend to keep it low key. I first found my life of football during Italian 90 when we were staying in a little cottage in Devon and were watching all the marches in the evenings, got to the semi finals then but not again since.

Can't stand it  . The constant, droning noise of the crowd really annoys me (my OH and YS are watching it but I'm often on my laptop in the same room). I also hate the constant discussion before, during and after each and every game. The game's over - move on :wall: . You'd think there was nothing important going on elsewhere in the world  .

Try living with 3 Man U fans. They are so noisey and I have to shut all the doors when trying to sleep for an early shift. I have come down and read them the riot act and frankly told em to "zip it" . Also Corrie gets moved about too much and that makes me grumpy as I dont know where I am - so in the Loathe it camp.

Wow...thats really interesting that the majority of posts are either anti or indifferent  It does seem to have taken over the whole country and I so wonder what else it is masking in terms of the actual news (happenings in Iraq etc  )

Personally I think that the whole footie thing is daft with the obscene amounts of money that these blokes are paid each month - more than some of us earn in a year. Ditto what is charged for the club kit - all a bit of a rip off :wall: When I think of the wonderful and valuable work that those in the health service do day to day and the pittance that they get paid  how can anyone justify the salaries of these footballers against A&E staff etc saving lives every day OOOOOOOh makes me soooo mad

Rant over!

Not a football fan at all, they are overpaid and badly behaved in my opinion (with a few notable exceptions) and I loathe the way football dominates the news and my colleagues' conversations BUT ... I make an exception for the World Cup, it's the only time I ever watch footie. No flags out here but I'll be going round to a friend's later for pizza and a drink and to watch the match with them. I somehow find it more exciting watching England play.

I used to be married to an obsessive football fan, that may have something to do with it. And yes, I do understand the offside rule!

Can't stand football myself.

As for flags - next door have put one up on MY fence AND they have bought the boy one of those stupid blowy things to squawk round the garden, like he needed an excuse to make even more noise than usual

And why can't the football be shown on ITV2 or other channels so that us normal folk can still watch Emmerdale and Coronation Street ?

Any football I've ever seen always shows the footballer falling over and writhing around in agony only to get up a few minutes later and be perfectly fine .......namby pambies if you ask me.

As a Season Ticket holder at a well known football club, me and OH LOVE the World Cup ( and most sport for that matter!!) There are no flags or mad people running around in my road, but we do enjoy quietly watching in our own home (though we were a bit noisy last night when Holland beat Spain!! ) Guess it was because I grew up with a sport loving Dad and as I was by far the youngest, i was the one who sat and watched with him in his older years. I'll watch anything but Rugby League

Part time footie fans here :D Only watch the England games, and get rather excited when doing so  I do not like the amount it is discussed before and after each game though, and the and how much unnecessary drama there is on the pitch, a tedious waste of time. I also do not like how much the players are paid. Rather disgusting. Give me rugby any day. They are real men  I am rather partial to Wimbledon though and have this year been watching a bit of the Queens matches.

Well, I'm not interested in football BUT the upside of the World Cup for me is that I have friends who've gone to Brazil for the group stages - so I get to look after their adorable pet rats whilst they're away 8) Trouble is, it's making me want to have some of my own ... :anxious:

Me and the OH aren't bothered for it, in previous years we've watched England's matches and enjoyed them but we're not staying up to watch them this year, and we rarely watch telly anyway so aren't fussed about the disruption it causes. My mums not happy though

I agree about how much they get paid though - an obscene amount! Maybe one day all the clubs will go bust.
