little chickadee
We've lost our first hen today They got out of the run unbeknown to us and the dog was out. She's a gentle thing, but has always got excited when she sees the hens so we didn't know how she would be if she met them. We know now. Our kids are really upset and we'll be getting another couple soon. At least the others are ok and the kids will be more careful about the run now. If anyone has pictures of white laying hens and info on how noisy they are - please could you post them, so I can plan. Many many thanks Edited March 29, 2008 by Guest

lozkate
LC, Don't bother replying to my post on my Dog/Chickens thread. I hadn't read this post. As far as white laying chickens are concerned we have two light sussex (or lite sussex or sussex lite etc). They have both laid almost every day right through winter. Obviously they have the black feathers around the cape but they are both very good layers and mainly white. Loz

Christian
LC did you mean you wanted white laying hens or white egg layers? If you want a white chicken, The light sussex is gorgeous. I have one called Winifred and she is so adorable. I use her as my 'demo' chicken at my hen courses and she is lovely and placid. Very quiet and content. Hope you find what you are looking for. clucky1
That is so sad. Hope you and the children are of comfort to each other. I know my daughters would be very sad. Thinking of you
Olly
Oh so sorry to hear that ... and I can vouch for your dog Holly being very gentle, she was lovely last week at the Advanced Hen Party. I guess it's just too much to ask from a dog which is bred to chase things that move - they can't help their nature. How awful for all of you - hope you are all consoling each other, and that you find a new white egg-layer.
bellekatz
I have a white star (White leghorn hybrid). they can be a bit flighty but mine is not too bad and she isnt too noisy. She has been a fantastic white egg layer, being the only one to lay every day all thoguh the winter and she is still laying 3 or 4 a week even though she is having a mini moult at the moment

Roxanne
She's a gentle thing, but has always got excited when she sees the hens so we didn't know how she would be if she met them. We know now. So sorry to hear about your poor hen. Was it the greyhound? They are normally such gentle dogs but with their 'past life' as chasers of small moving objects I suppose her instinct took over. It is a lesson to us all, and unfortunately, however much we love our dogs, they just can't be trusted with such temping bait. Your sad experience has made me check my bolts on the hen house twice today before I walked away. Hope you all get over your loss soon. Eyren
Very sorry to hear the bad news My Wyandotte bantam lays white eggs, though they are slightly off-white rather than the bright white of some hybrids. She has a loud voice and likes to have a good shout if she sees something out of the ordinary, like a helicopter flying over or my neighbours leaning over the fence to admire her, but isn't a dawn-choruser, thank goodness! She is very pretty, though, and lays every other day for most of the year, and you can of course get standard-sized Wyandottes (the bantam version came later). Cinnamon
Sorry to hear of your loss This is my Lily, who is a White Star. She has an excess of personality,is a bit scatty & generally as daft as a brush, but we all love her. Her eggs are massive & pure bright white

yvonne
I also have a white star have only had her 2 days, and she lays bright white eggs every day(earily so !) I got her from Meadowsweet poultry who have agents across the country, not sure of the website, but googling it will find it I'm sure. She is not noisy, but can fly quite well (straight over the eglu after the first 5 mins when I tried to separate the new girls from my older hen. She is not aggressive or anything like that though, from what I've seen so far, I'd definately recommend them.
