New waste disposal collection for us

Recommended Posts

I had a flyer through the door yeasterday, & it seems that after years of just normal bin bags being left out, my village is finally out of the dark ages.

Yes, we are getting whellies! :P:clap::clap::clap:

We get a normal wheelie for our waste, a HUGE green one for our recyclable waste, including Tetras & galss, plus a neat food waste box and a mini kitchen caddy to fill up & empty into the food waste box.

This food waste is going to be composted & sold back to us, if we like.

I am really happy, although there have been mutterings from some quaters in the village

sounds like a really good and comprehensive system :D :D

we don't get anything like that here......weekly household colection of either 1 240L wheelie bin or 5 bin bags and a very limited recycling collection every fortnight (although rumour has it that we may soon be able to put glass and juice boxes in the recycling......yay :lol: )

We can have green garden waste collected once a fortnight for an additional fee......but places on this scheme are limited and they are a bit fussy about what they will collect

I find it hard to believe in this day and age that black bin bags are still being left outside. My Gran in Kent still has bin bags

Sounds like a good system Sarah. We have a black wheelie bin for general waste and a blue bin for card board, paper, tin cans and drinks cans (just the one or two diet coke cans a week :liar::liar: ), still waiting for the green bin for garden rubbish though!

OH managed to find a wheelie bin sticker place on line. So we now have our address on each bin  A good idea, but we only have 8 houses in the Village

There is no consistency at all is there.

We have a black wheelie for non-recyclable and a green one for garden waste and cardboard. You were allowed to put veg peelings, tea bags, coffee grinds into this but are now not allowed to due to some stupid EU ruling, so we were told. We also have a green box for plastic, glass, tins, cans, aerosols and we can also put out clothing for collection. Oh, and we have a blue bag for paper waste.

We've had wheelie bins and recycling here for a while now, and having had it when I lived in London, I was only too happy to use it, but not everyone likes the system.

I have asked our council whether we can buy the compost that they make, but they seem to be missing out on a potential revenue stream there

I have a black wheelie (although mine is green and has Edinburgh City Council on it, my dad 'acquired' it when his men were working through there  ), and a blue for recycled stuff, collected alternate weeks. I'd love one for garden waste.....my local 'tip' is turning me away now when I clean out the chooks and I have to drive for miles, 2 runs

Why can't they have one system for all? We have a black box for paper, glass, fabrics, aerosols and tin foil. We have another old kitchen bin which we put in our cans. We have a big black wheely bin for household rubbish and a blue lidded one for card and plastic bottles. If we wanted a green one for garden waste, we'd have to buy it ourselves for 30 odd quid!

We are on the crux of 3 counties here and all have differing recycling provisions  They don't colect glass here and we have to take that to a recycling centre.

There's a fabulous idea at the Te$co near my folks - they have a recycling centre where you pop your clubcard in the slot, then post your recycling in the appropriate slot and receive points for everything you recycle.... keeps rubbish off the streets too as enterprising folk are scouring the streets for recyclable gubbins to gain extra points! I wonder whether they plan to roll this out to other stores?

We still have weekly black bag collections...and I have to say I am perfectly happy with this. We have brown sacks for garden/kitchen waste and cardboard, a black box for paper/cans/glass and a plastic bag for plastic (bottles only  )

Tetra pak stuff has to be taken to the local supermarkets to be recycled.

We have had boxes for recycling up until now too, but they have no lids so it all either gets soggy or blows away down the garden

Also, as we have 6 of them they take up a fair bit of space - 1 nice tall recycling wheelie will be a real improvement :P

I am especially pleased about the waste food collection too, as even though we do compost ourselves, the bins & heaps are all now pretty much full, so we could do with a rest from this.

I am also glad that it will give those old stick-in-the-muds in the village no excuse not to recycle 8)

I have a black wheely bin

A sack for cardboard (once a month!)

a sack for paper (fortnightly)

Orange box for glass & tins (fortnightly)

Plastic sacks for plastic (fortnightly)

And SIX brown garden wheely bins (fortnightly) - they let you order as many as you like and I've found 6 is the right number to stop me having to go to the tip between collections!!!!!

I can barely get out of the drive sometimes :roll:

Thanks for the link Loon; I can't believe that people would do that! The book looks good though.

In Birmingham we are not having wheelie bins in the forseeable future and I am pleased about that! I have nowhere to put a wheelie bin at the front of my property, and where would it end up until I got home from work to retrieve it on collection day? I would have to buy a new one each time I put it out!! I have to say that I have a carrier bag of rubbish each week so only put a bin bag out once every three weeks, shared with my mum who lives close by, anyway.

We have a good system of dealing with our waste in Birmingham and we do not landfill any combustable waste. We have black bin bags (household waste), which are burnt and supply energy to the National Grid, fly ash and non burnable bits are collected and used too. We have paper/cardboard/catalogue collection plus green garden waste and glass/plastic collections too. Removal of bulky waste white goods or other household items is free and appointments can be booked online. Doing this encourages people to dispose of things responsibly and not to fly tip, hopefully!

We got wheelie bins a few years ago. So now we have a black bin for household waste, a green wheelie bin for garden waste(but not animal waste/food etc, just for leaves and twigs), a blue box for tins and glass and separate paper and cardboard sacks.

We then take our plastic bottles and drinks cartons to the local recylcing place or to Sainsbury's as our council don't collect them and we go through lots as a family of 6 that it seems silly to put them in the bin.

Our council is getting split in 2 next week to make 2 smaller councils so whether our recylcing will change i'm not sure.

Emma

Edited to say: our bins are only collected every 2 weeks on a roater system-black bin, paper and cardboard one week and the next week green bin and tins/glass. It works for us and as a family of 6 with a standard sized wheelie bin we never overfill as the 2 people who live at the end of our track do with more bin bags next to the wheelie bin. I havn'r heard any talk of a compost bin being added here, although with 4 compost heaps made from pallets and a plastic compost. Plus the chickens, guinea pigs and dog no food waste goes into the bin that we wouldn't be able to feed animals or compost ourselves.

brown wheelie bin for garden waste and animal waste like rabbit/chicken bedding (obviously no dogs/cats :vom: ) fortnightly spring to nov time

red box for glass

blue box for paper and cans

black bags of general waste weekly

i wish we had more as we have tonnes of cardboard so collect and take to recycle centre.

We live in the country and have one wheelie bin in a lovely green shade only for household rubbish. We have no recycling at all but subsidised compost bins! - I have many 6 or 7 if I counted rightly!. We can drive up to the local village hall to deposit glass, tins, paper and no facility for plastic at present - the towns have recycling facilities but with the bins taking off in the wind I am glad we have no other boxes to deal with We just have loads of compost. Also no lessening on the council tax either.

A friend of mine told me about the book so I looked it up and came across the website. I'll borrow her copy and let you know what it's like. Not sure how much of it will be stuff we already do...does sound interesting though.

We have black bags, we're only allowed to put out three a week but we just about manage one Tesco compostable bag. Then we have brown bags for cardboard/paper/envelopes and a green bag for plastic bottles and tins. Garden waste is collected once a fortnight in separate strong bags. Some streets have glass recycling, which we would love. At the moment we take glass, batteries and juice cartons for recycling. All food waste goes in the compost where the chickens remove the choicest pieces :vom: And yes, that includes some cooked waste, although we rarely throw away food, and we don't have rats.

We have a fabulous scheme here. So good, in fact, that I really can't think of what we should be putting in the black 'regular' waste wheelie bin. We have a fortnightly green wheelie bin collection for all recyclables (plastic, tin, paper and cardboard) which was recently extended to include tetrapaks, all plastic packaging, margarine tubs, clingfilm and foil. A fortnightly collection for normal waste. Two large reusable bags for garden waste and a weekly food waste collection. The only thing they don't collect is glass.

I do have my doubts about the percentage of this that actually gets recycled but at least the willingness to try is there!

The main difficulty of this scheme is that everything has to go in the recyclable bin loose, so if you open it on a windy day, a load of plastic bags will usually escape
