I've been to Devon and I came home with...

Recommended Posts

Now before I tell you what came home I need to explain (justify) my actions:

1. I just went into the Devon Traditional Breeds Centre, Crediton, Devon for a look yesterday;

2. Their winter sale which should have ended end of December had been extended to end of Feb;

3. Whilst I have 18 eggs in the incy to replace my one hen that died a few weeks ago, candling at 6 days didn't look good - particularly my wanted orps & silkies;

4. OH suggested I should have a couple of orps in the sales for my birthday;

5. It is my birthday today, so we called in on the way home;

6. I now have these in the garden :D:D :

The Buff Orp is 5 months old, was the last of last year's hatches and has been living in a barn all winter. The black orp is 6 months, again left over from last year's hatching so was in the sale. I know orps are supposed to be laid back, so I am thinking of calling them Dilly & Dally - they need to be at home a few days before I get to decide on names.

They really are big and still have plenty of growing to do.

Thanks all - it meant a bit of hen juggling when we got back - bully Bella had been in isolation for 2 weeks in an eglu on her own. The new girls are now in that eglu and Bella is back with the others layers, but with new bumper bit fitted and the others sprayed with anti-pecking spray.

They said it would be OK to integrate the new girls after a couple of days - whilst they are very healthy I have lice powdered them and worming them as a precaution over the next week, then I will take Bella out and put the new girls in with the 4 layers in the Cube - but make sure they are covered in antipecking spray before the move as a precaution. Of course if I didn't have 4 egg laying 'meat birds' in my 2nd eglu there would be plenty of room.

They are just so pretty and even took themselves off to bed after spending a few hours eating/drinking and scratching around the pen.

You don't have to justify getting new babies to us!!1 :D

Happy Birthday.........beautiful girls :D

I love it at Devon Traditional Breeds Centre.....they have so much to choose from.....my brother lives nearby and I manage to persuade him every time I visit to go there (involves bribe with lunch in the cafe).......prob best I didn't know the sale was extended as there is def no more room at the inn.

So I have moved them around after dark tonight as I home for the next three days. Bully bella is back on her own in the eglu and the two new orps - who are bigger than the other 4 layers are coated in antipecking spray and with them in the cube. The others had bumper bits fitted at the weekend as a precaution so I will be watching them all closely for the next few days. The orps came from big mixed pens and Nick said it was fine to put them in with the others after a couple of days so I will see what happens. Certainly taking 3 months over intros last time didn't work so let's hope quick intros with the big bully removed will work.
