Hayfever sudden onset????

Recommended Posts

To be honest I'm not sure but DD and I have been suffering this last couple of weeks and neither of us has suffered before. ES who always suffers every year without fail, seemed to get over it very quickly this year, so he's actually been better than usual :?

Sorry not much help but hope it eases soon.

I think you can develop it at any time. Often people only notice it when the pollen count is exceptionally high - which it has been the last few days. :? I'm growing out of mine - it gets less troublesome each year. But the last few days the whole family have been sneezing!

Hubby and I have started having hayfever over the last couple of years. YS has had terrible hayfever since he was a toddler.

Took YS back to doctors as his usual tablet wasn't working and he said that some years you just have to try a different tablet as they don't seem to work the same, next year could be back on the normal one and it will be fine. He also gave him a nasal spray too. I think it is a very bad year for hayfever.

I used to be a hayfever free zone, always amused by my mum's & brother's streaming eyes and noses during the summer . Over the past few years though it has been me suffering the most :( I suppose it teaches me for not being v sympathetic all those years ago  Piriton seems to keep mine in check, and desperately trying not to rub my eyes :shameonu:

I agree with others who have said you can develop it at any age, as you can with asthma. Interesting article ***here*** says we have higher levels of hayfever in the UK and it could be overuse of antibiotics and too clean houses.

I have hereditary hayfever which developed as a child, along with a few of my cousins. Like Lesley though, I am growing out of it now. I used to sneeze myself to the floor with my mum counting the sneezes, I often got up to 35 in a row, and sometimes beyond 50

Edited to add: Sunshine irritates hayfever as it activates the pollen, so if you are badly affected it's best to stay in the shade.

Maybe its something to do with the harsh winter, plants generally speaking blooming later than normal (including grasses) and this is co-inciding this week with our very hot and very still, weather?

You can develop it late on in life, or grow out of it, and it can be caused by triggers and/or you can have an inherited predisposition. OH is late-onset whilst I 'inherited' it and have mostly grown out of it - except this week! I find good wrap-around shades help as a physical barrier and now there is such a range of OTC meds it does seem to be a case of trying them and seeing what works for you. OH swears by a nasal spray as he gets the sneezes whilst I use any pill I can find because I suffer from itchy puffy eyes - Miss Piggy; what a great look! If I do get the itchy/swollen eyes I make a cold compress of soaked tissue folded into a square for each eye, refreshed as necessary and go and lie down inside for a few minutes somewhere cool but it does take hours to go down properly.

I first got hayfever at the age of 26, never having suffered from any allergies before. I've had it every spring/summer since though strangely during my pregnancies the symptoms have not nearly been as bad. I've heard another none-medicinal tip, apart from shades, is to smear vaseline near the nostrils to prevent pollen going in. Hope this helps.

I too developed hayfever later on in life. I think I was around 30 ish when it first started. Not sure what affects me though; tree, grass or flowers? But I have also developed an allergic reaction to sunshine and have to wear factor 50 otherwise I get a horrible red itchy rash all over the part not covered or protected.

Yes I started getting it suddenly when I was about 30 with grass pollen from this time of year to the end of the summer, it got quite bad and I had to take an antihistimine.

I got shut of it by chance after trying Wormersley Herbs Apple and Geranium Jelly from Harrods, posh farm shops, on line or cheap at the factory shop in Pontefract. I don't take it every year but if I feel it starting I get a jar and have a teaspoon a day - I swear by it.

Have a look at Lime, Black Pepper and Lavenders dressing - just the best on salad, fruit, pancakes or ice cream.

It's been strange this year, people who usually get it haven't. This is the first year my mother hasn't had hayfever for forty years, my friend, husband and son who normally suffer aren't, and people are suffering for the first time this year, I would love to know what is different.

My mum too seems to have started with it this year after 60 yrs of not having it.

I was thinking i was soooo lucky this year as mine (had it for as long as i can remember) hadn't started, usually starts anytime from April , took hold a couple of days ago with nighttime being horrendous the last couple of nights especially and having to use an inhaler.

Tips for night, cover your pillow if the window is open and uncover when you go to bed.

Close the window at all times and use a fan, this works the best as pollen can't get in.

I thought I had recently developed hayfever because my eyes have been streaming, but my optician assures me I have dry eye syndrome which seems strange, since lately I would have benefitted from shares in Kleenex...however (apparently) you can have streaming eyes and still have dry eyes..the problem being that your tears don't have the right composition ...so anyway fortunately I don't have hayfever..I just look like I do :?

We too are a hayfever suffering family! My OH has it terrible every year, but strangley symtoms have been much less severe for the first time in twenty years this year? Our 2 children suffer too it also aggrevates their eczema and asthma so have to get them to take antihistimines daily, we use shops own brand Loratadine brand name Clarityn but 3 times cheaper. Piriton made the children too sleepy.

We also try the below tips!

Vaseline around the nose to stop pollen going in

Optrex kept in the fridge to dampen cotton wool pads to place on the eyes when itchy or you can buy the gel eye mask

from the body shop to keep in the fridge

shower and hair wash before bed time to get rid of pollen on body and hair

We keep the windows shut and sometimes use an plug ioniser in the bedrooms to get rid of the pollen

Stay out of the garden if windy as pollen blowing around

Now we dont do this, but they say not to peg out clothes or bedding on the line as pollen obviously gets trapped on the clothing. but I cannot bring myself to tumble dry in the summer!

Olbas oil under the pillow to help clear the nose

the trouble with itchy eyes is once you rub them they will not stop so use the cool water / optrex thingy straight away

It can be really miserable at this time of year as you want to spend time in the garden but are unable to do so :( but hang on in there as the pollens do subside every now and again. I Know that by the end of July my OH is through his pollen type and my YS starts mid August! so we can plan it!

Good luck :D

Definitely! I'd never suffered from any hayfever (or other allergies) until my early 40s. It took around 3 years to spot a pattern with pretty awful eczema on my eyelids. As it happens at very specific times of the year, my GP has suggested that it's almost certainly an allergy to a pollen. I just take an antihystamine while it's around.

T sneezed at work and one of my contact lenses flew out! That's never happened before.

:lol::lol:

:lol::lol: shouldnt laugh but I cant help it - I get hayfever too.

This year has been odd, folks who normally are really bad aren't suffering so much, possible because we are all on treatment, but lots of others are having it for the first time
