Just had a shocking chat with my mum....

We were talking about ideas to fox proof the garden and I was explaining a few ideas that I had, when she said................

Wait for it..............

"This hen keeping hobby is getting very expensive....isn't it time you gave it up and got rid of them"

:!::shock::!::shock::!::shock::!::shock::!::shock::!::shock::!::shock::!:

It is rare for women's hobbies and past times to be expensive and require large amounts of expensive equipment. I did a study on it at college....mostly men have things like fishing, golf, trains and sports, which require lots of expensive kit...whilst women have hobbies which don't! I suppose chickens love is the exception..... :mrgreen:

Blimey. :shock: Am flabbergasted that she would think it any of her business. :shock: Sorry to be blunt.

Or was she jesting. Yes, that'll be it. :lol:

In my mum's eyes, anything in my life is her business :roll: . I don't think she was jesting, but now I've explained my feelings on the matter I know she won't mention it again :lol:

People spend thousands on pedigree dogs, or horses, yet you spend a lot on chickens and people think you are barmy :roll:

I'm proud that I spend so much on my girls :) it proves my love :wink::lol:

I'm glad I have lost track on how much I've spent, its runs into several thousands :anxious:

When my grandad died and left all his grandchildren some money with the instructions to "buy something nice" my cousins bought a nice watch or a piece of jewellery.... Me, it's getting WIR 2, however, I know that he'd be really chuffed with that as he loved the girls :P

I'm still trying to keep the total cost of 'running' my girls from my hubby! :lol:

But should he ever suggest they're becoming an expensive hobby, I'll have no trouble reminding him about his ie. windsurfing, skiing, various racquet sports etc. all of which aren't cheap either!!

This is slippery slope - I got the same response about 6 years ago from my mum... I decided to help cover some of the costs of keeping chickens by breeding a few - I figured it was a way of getting replacements when my girls got older......

Oh well we went from 1 house and 6 chickens to - nearly 30 houses, no idea how many chickens! A shop to sell a few bits and bobs (again to keep costs down) .... need I go on.....

But you know its become a way of life and no way would i have it any other way... and remember should you ever decide to stop keeping poultry if you have an omlet house chances are you will be able to sell for more or less what you paid for the coop! ( i think of it as a loan for life for free! - well almost!)

:whistle::whistle::whistle::whistle:
