New setup, awaiting hens! With pics!

Recommended Posts

The OH and I went to visit Mrs Webmuppet to see an Eglu cube in the flesh.

After a guided tour of the cube, a cuddle with her chickens and a chat with Mrs Webmuppet and her daughter we were convinced.

As soon as we got home we placed an order for a green cube with 2 run extensions (total of 4 metres) plus feed, accessories and odd & sods. We're now £1140 lighter but very excited!

Our new cube arrived on Thursday. 10 boxes & bags took up a lot of room in our hall!

So hubby and I set about putting it together. It's surprisingly easy to assemble and took us about an two and a half hours, taking it easy.

There were a couple of missing bits (a run extension and a sliding bolt) which Omlet sorted out very promptly and it's all ready to go.

It's a thing of beauty and looks great at the end of our garden.

Here it is all assembled:

And with the finishing touches:

We've ordered an electric fence too, but that hasn't arrived yet. Once it does, the hens will be able to free range in on 1/3 acre of lawn with fruit trees.

Now roll on Saturday! We're going hen shopping!

The OH has his heart set on Orpingtons, almost certainly buff and maybe blue.

I rather like Amber Stars, Silver-lace Wyandotte and I rather fell in love with Mrs Webmuppet's French Grey.

It obviously depends on what we can find, but we've already found some beautiful buff & blue girls elsewhere so they shouldn't be a problem.

Love your garden but it needs a bench by the run and a table for your flask :D

Funnily enough, just off to the side of one of the photos we have a garden swing perfectly positioned for chook observation. DH bought it last summer so he could chill out in the garden with a book and a cuppa.

Does anybody else have an electric fence? I've recently set one up and I just can't quite believe it will work! The current is more of an "oww!" rather than anything properly unpleasant. :?

Ours hasn't arrived yet, but I imagine a curious fox will be less tolerant of the shock from one than a human being. Something to do with our bigger body mass perhaps?

Your set up looks gorgeous!!

I have electric fences and they definately work! We have a family of foxes next door and saw plenty of foxy footprints in the snow! My dogs who are both significantly bigger than a fox (11 stone of Newfoundland each) only touched it once and now give it a wide birth! I think animals get a bigger shock than we do due to not wearing shoes - try touching it in bare feet on damp grass to get the full effect! :)

You can always get a fence tester to ensure the voltage is sufficient (more expense  ). But my Labrador won't go anywhere near my girls as he associates the shock he got from the fence with the hens rather than the fence  .
