Painful joints?

Recommended Posts

After posting about my poor Riley's arthritis, I'm starting to wonder if I have the same thing :? . Both my elbows ache from time to time and if I have them bent for any length of time, I have to stretch them out to ease them.

I don't think it's at the stage of needing a doctor but was wondering if any of you take supplements for anything similar and what you find effective.

I've been taking malt and cod liver oil for a while now (big dollops on a spoon - makes OH heave, Mwahahaha!) - but I love it, shlurp!! A friend's brother swears by glucosamine sulphate, so I have one tablet a day for that. Not sure if it makes a difference, but the knees seem to be better.

Yes! I feel like a little old lady at times. Apart from my elbows, its my fingers and feet and knees. I've been taking glucosamine & cod liver oil, plus evening primrose and Menopace. I understand (and I'm not saying you're at that point  - I'm not quite there yet myself ) but that in peri and the menopause, your joints can ache more. My Mum has bad osteoarthritis in her hands and various other places so I did start taking supplements early but it doesn't seem to have helped much. On a bad day I have little red dots on my finger joints :(

If anyone has any other good suggestions I'm happy to listen too.

The orthopeadic surgeons at my work always recommend glucosamine sulphate for early arthritis. Ideally take a minimum of 1000mg per day.

That is really interesting as I have recently seen a surgeon about my shoulder which is showing degenerative changes. I have to decide if I want an op or not. It really annoys me, however I am a bit worried as to whether the op would work :? I think I will try those pills first. Thank you for the advice :D

I read a book - actually I bought it for my kindle about this lady Margaret Hills SRN treating arthritis the drug free way - using cider vinegar, molasses and honey - my goodness its icky but it works - I stopped taking it and oh boy the knees - I started again and after about 10 days they are wonderful once more - I cannot take the molasses so take blackstrap molasses tabs and fresh organic honey - manuka if you can and if not any and I take the cider vinegar in cordial and down it and then take my spoon of honey - its not hard to do and it works well.

I don't know about arthritis but I do know that about 18mnths ago I would be awake at night with sharp, very painful hips and knees. I thought I'd fight it by doing exercises that would build up muscles. I took no advice, this is just what I found, anyway, the ache has stopped & I never wake up in pain. TBH I hadn't realised that until I read your post, I had forgotten the ache.

I started mine yesterday too :) . Don't know how long it takes though. I really hope it helps you  .

Oh I hope it does. I am only in my early 50's......just a girl really  so I am a bit fed up being diagnosed with arthritis, although my mum had it so perhaps it's hereditary. I go to aerobics and pilates but have been told by the consultant that exercising is likely to make it worse :( I do hope the tablets work for you too. It just makes you feel so old

After a bad car accident a couple of years ago I had a lot of problems with my neck and shoulders. Walking I could only do short distances before being in agony. I started swimming again last year (once I'd lost enough weight to fit into my old cossies) and found it helped immensely, haven't been for about 3 weeks and I can feel it already. Just waiting for the schools to go back and I can enjoy my long distances again. Although I can't do front crawl and I'm rubbish at breast stroke anyway - they aggravate my neck. I stick to back stroke - which is my preferred style. I'm even able to walk/route march long distances without any aches or pains now. Unless my OH is with me - he's a pain!

I am not a good swimmer but had thought about it as I know it can be a good supported exercise. However any of these wide movements above my head cause pain and I have been told this may aggravate the problem. What annoys me most suppose is that about 5 years ago I started to feel a bit sore and stiff in the morning and thought that this was not on. I upped my exercise from just playing badminton to going to about 3-4 classes at the gym per week...aerbics hi/low, aerokick, power pump and pilates. Up until the new year apart from the odd tendon tweak all was well. I am taking the tablets in the hope they will help and am just doing lower limb exercises at the gym. I am worried if I go for the op it may make it worse although the consultant says it quite straightforward and successful, but if anyone has had it I would love to know how it went. Another concern is that for a short while after I would not be able to sort out the garden and animals.

funny enough I was with my chiropractor yesterday and he reccomended glucosamine too, physios are are good for teaching you the correct exercises to do to build up muscles to support your joints, and hydro therapy has some good evidence to support it too so I tried that and found it really helped my knee pain - ran out of money though because I had to pay.

I went to the physio prior to seeing the consultant. She gave me ultrasound, exercises with a band and manipulated the joint. There was little improvement and what there was on hindsight was probably the usual fluctuations that seem to come with arthritis. The consultant said that physio would not help :( What you said about seeing the chiropractor has made me think it might be worth going to see an osteopath that my friend was telling me about a few months ago. She said she really helped with her neck. Also she did not keep her on as a patient any longer than was necessary. As you say these things can be expensive.

My friend had both her shoulders done - she waited until they were really quite bad as she couldn't cope with the thought of relying on her partner for help - the immobility post op is a drag. But it has done wonders for her and she is so glad she had it done. :D

I've decided to start taking Glucosamine again... I stopped a few months back, purely for reasons of economy, but have noticed that the pre-arthritis in my (hyper-mobile) thumb joints is much worse so I'll get back on it.

I to have back problems due to a bad car accident in my 20s; regular exercise and keeping my core muscles trim really helps but I also visit my osteopath if it gets really painful.
