Space Chick
Long story short... Bought a prawn sandwich in M&S yesterday for my lunch, ate it. Didn't check date Also bought one for my sister... She went to eat it later... Checked date... Out of date... She threw hers out. I now have horrendous food poisoning and have spent most of last night and today sat on the toilet with my head down the sink at the same time I feel dreadful and can't even keep fluids down I know that if I'm buying something to eat straight away, especially from somewhere like M&S I never check the dates... Don't want any of you lovely people to be caught out like me.
Bramble
Oh you poor thing, that's awful - hope you reported it to M&S? Hope you are feeling better very soon.
Egluntyne
Oh heck. Poor you. I'd let M&S know.
chestnutmare
Oh no... nasty! I don't usually check the date either. As I don't eat meat or fish, I don't know if I can actually get food poisoning. But I wouldn't want it! Are you starting to feel better? Bramble
Oh no... nasty! I don't usually check the date either. As I don't eat meat or fish, I don't know if I can actually get food poisoning. But I wouldn't want it! Are you starting to feel better? Oh yes, trust me, you can!!!!! Im veggie too, but had the most horrendous experience once after eating a cheese and something sarnie from another well known sarnie seller. This one wasn't out of date, but it did taste a bit "odd" - I just thought it was meant to be like that, ate it, and suffered the consequences. I don't think being out of date always means something is off, but it does pay to check!
The Dogmother
Sorry to hear that Deb, thanks for the warning
Tutti Frutti
Poor you SC! Off prawns? Eww Hope you settle down soon. For those who buy reduced items - just make sure it's not bulging (eg the peel-off lids on ready meals) as, if it is, the bacteria are already getting busy and producing their gases causing the swell
snowberry
You can get food poisoning from practically all foods; though it's less likely in more acidic foods. Being veggie won't save you as there's ice cream & rice is one of the most worst! Rather than go straight to M&S, I'd get the docs to take a sample off you. Find the packaging & reciept if you can as well. I hope you recover very swiftly!
Space Chick
M&S have been emailed but packaging is long gone Really don't think I can go to the docs, my symptoms are too "volatile" shall we say
Ain't Nobody Here
Poor you . You don't expect that from M&S, I'd definitely follow it up . Hope you feel better soon .
chestnutmare
That's interesting. I'll have to be not-so-laid-back about dates now then, just incase. Debs, you could always get someone else to get a sample pot for you from the docs and have them return it. You should chase it up, although I know now you probably just want to concentrate on feeling better.

Cinnamon
You poor thing ... I really sympathise. A few years ago on our first day on holiday at centerparcs ,I bought and ate duck pate that was 2 days out of date. A rather interesting short break followed! I was almost sent to hospital it was so bad. Do tell them-I did and got my holiday refunded, plus a free one. Get well soon
chocchick
ooh dear. I bought some bacon and discovered it was about a week past its sell by date so took it back.
majuka
Poor you, that is terrible. Although I always check the dates of things that I am buying during my weekly shop, I don't check things like sandwiches that I am going to eat straight away. I will do from now on though. Hope you feel better soon.

Space Chick
I have stopped being sick, but still have dioherrea however, I can live with that. My whole body aches though, I feel like I have been punched several times over. I'm over the worst. Just need to try and eat something now
Bramble
Have a tiny bit of plain boiled rice or pasta, that usually helps me and anything fizzy to drink (somehow, when I feel like you do now, fizzy drinks stay down better than just "flat" ones). Really hope you are on the mend now.
Valkyrie
Yep, I agree - chase M&S - has your sis still got the bin to resurrect the uneaten one? Hope you are better today and loo trips getting further apart!
Space Chick
I was thinking about having some scrambled egg. That may be light but good
Chickendoodle
Oh no... nasty! I don't usually check the date either. As I don't eat meat or fish, I don't know if I can actually get food poisoning. But I wouldn't want it! Are you starting to feel better? I am afraid anyone can get it - there was that recent really nasty Ecoli outbreak in Germany which killed lots of people and that was caused by beansprouts ! Apparently the virus can get inside the seed before it is sprouted and only cooking kills it. Hope you are feeling better Space Chick - I always start with dry toast and if that stays down progress on to other things - probably best to stay away from any dairy produce for a few days as that can aggravate the symptoms
Mercedes55
That does sound a really bad case of food poisoning, sorry you are feeling so bad. Prawns can be quite nasty when they are off I think. Mind you same goes for rice too I think, according to what my son learnt when he worked for Sainsbury's and had to go on a Health & Hygiene course. I would think M&S will do something to compensate you as most shops like that try to keep their reputation positive. A few months ago my OH and I bought some bananas from Waitrose. I had eaten about 4 of them over the course of a few days and when I got to the last one I noticed something attached to the outside of it, can't believe I hadn't seen it before. It turned out to be some kind of cocoon and it fell off and some big black thing fell out of it, not alive fortunately. I took the banana back to Waitrose and they refunded me the price of them, gave me a new bunch and a few weeks later we got a letter of apology and a £15 JL voucher too. ClaireG
Glad you complained to M&S. You expect the upper end supermarkets to be even more vigilant about sell by dates. When i had a stomach bug the other week i was recommended the BRAT diet until everything had cleared. It's bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast. I was also advised to avoid diary products for a few days.
