Sammiboo
Really gutted, came home today to find Bunty had died in the nest box It looks like she has suffered from a prolaspe but I have only checked her on sunday as her vent area has been getting mucky of late but she has been running around quite happy. Although her body was stiff her " belly area" felt quite fluidy. She was just over 12 months old, i thought the ex batts or ex FRers would be the first to go.... RIP Bunty

Sammiboo
Thank you for all your kind comments. I have found another part of owning chickens some people find it a joke, and have been cracking "jokes" on what i could do with her on sunday.... Annoys me, if it was a dog or cat people would be far more sympathetic..... Calling the vet later to arrange to have her disposed
Patricia W
You might not want to do this, but did you know you can double bag and dispose in the rubbish? This is what I do and I know many others do.
Space Chick
That really upsets me too...if people knew how much we cared, they'd be less likely to joke. One of my closest friends joked when one of mine died, she was a favourite of mine and coming home to find her dead in the cube was a real shock and I was gutted. My friend did not expect my fierce response So sorry to hear about your loss RIP beautiful girl x BTW - as undignified as it sounds, I always double bag and put in the rubbish. Purplemaniacs
If you decide to take her to the vet just be careful what they charge you. I have lost three chooks the first Henny Penny, DD and DS took for me as I was at work, they charged over £35.00 to cremate her, poor DD and DS did not know what to do as they knew how upset I was so just paid it. Ebony, DD took to another vets and they said no charge. Last year suddenly Annie one of my newish ex batts died and DD took to another vets who charged £10.00 which I was quite happy to pay but over £35.00 was just too much in my view. I have also considered the double bagging and bin but so far not dealt with any that way. I think you just have to be happy with what ever decision you make. Sammiboo
Thank you. My OH was almost in tears yesterday. He probably was when i left the room, he hasnt really had many pets and lost them. I am glad she died when I was home to find her, not when my neighbour will be looking after them in two weeks while i am on holiday, i think he would have blamed himself and not wanted to look after them again! I could double bag, i just couldnt bring myself to do it (big wuss i know) I dont think my OH would let me even if i wanted to. I was also in two minds whether to get a PM done as I am suprised that she would have died from a prolaspe and it wasnt a bad one, I have seen worse... Not sure what to do
majuka
Sadly there will always be insensitive idiots who think it is funny to make jokes when pets die. I actually feel very sorry for them because they have clearly never experienced the relationship that an owner has with their beloved pet - it is them who are missing out. I'm a sucker when my girls pass away. I have a cremation and ashes back to scatter in their enclosure. I know many people do double bag and bin but it is not for me. I think our local pet crematorium is £24 for an individual cremation with ashes back in a pot for scattering. They also do group cremation (cheaper) and individual cremation with ashes in a casket (more expensive). At our practice our usual vet does not charge a fee for making the arrangements with the crematorium but I know that he is meant to as when we have seen one of the partners for a pts when our usual vet was off we were charged an additional £8 for making the arrangements. MedusA
So sorry to hear your sad news. I have only ever found one of my hens dead unexpectedly. I think she had a stroke, as she'd been right as rain the evening before. It's hard to know what to do for the best. What a fabulous pic to remember her by though. RIP little chook. Luvachicken
You might not want to do this, but did you know you can double bag and dispose in the rubbish? This is what I do and I know many others do. So sorry to hear about Bunty. When I had Evie put down, the vets just charged me an extra 2 pound to have her cremated but you didn't get to keep the ashes. I didn't think that was too bad really - compared to their other prices.
