Groovychook
Best wishes for your daughter Karin, will be thinking of you both! Very proud Aunty alert... My Niece has been asked for interview to Oxford. She has to be there for 5pm today and doesn't come home till Saturday It sounds very stressful and intensive but I hope that she manages to enjoy the experience whatever the outcome! Just to get an interview at Oxford or Cambridge is a massive achievement - whether or not they get a place - I am sure you are both very proud and rightly so!!!! Fingers crossed for them both! Daphne
Bluekarin - I think your daughter is probably being grilled as we speak! I'm sending her lots of good vibes My nephew was interviewed at Cambridge and Imperial - I wonder what your daughter will think between them. Groovychook - good luck to your niece, I'm not sure how these things work, but does she already have a college in mind/chosen?
Groovychook
Thank you Daphne She's hoping to read Classics at St. John's. She'll be on her way now... I hope she's not too terrified
The Dogmother
Well done those kids! Phil's mum will be discharged today - they seem to be sure that it was just a diabetic episode, but he will ask lots of questions when he goes to collect her, and he will be dispensing her meds from now on, just in case. Not sure yet whether she will be able to make the stairs, or if he will have to fetch another bed downstairs... it's getting abit crowded down there now luckily their bathroom is downstairs. Alis girls
Well done Karins daughter. Glad MIL is on the mend Clare. They are a strong generation - all hugs and good wishes to you. Ali x
bluekarin
Thanks for your kind messages! All seemed to go well. Imperial is her top choice but she has yet to hear from them Still, plenty of time too.... It was a long old day with 9 hours of driving for poor hubby. We got caught in the tailbacks from the bad crash this morning on the M25 on the way there and then in the non roadworks roadworks traffic on the way home! Her interviewers weren't specialists in the field she wants, but she did her best with their questions, and tried to work out the problems they gave her. One of her friends had a two day interview Sunday to Monday with a 3 hour exam, for Maths. What is your niece hopping to study there to warrant an interview lasting that long? I wish her all the best too
Groovychook
Fingers crossed for your girl Karin My niece is hoping to study Classics. I had no idea that university interviews could last so long Good news about Phil's Mum DM. Hope she continues to improve and that the living arrangements work out okay. Alis girls
Went to a very boring meeting today (on my day off) to do with work. Motive in my madness as we are picking up ES next weekend from uni so want to leave early - so time in lieu. I was so bored I had to eat a mini mincepie - very nice it was too. That will mean a telling off from OH who is very good at sticking to his WW diet. Me I am not so good
Daphne
I employed mince pie logic earlier this week, whilst out for coffee with a girlfriend. I saw some with very lovely looking homemade pastry stars on the top of an open pie. So we had one each. As my OH isn't keen on pastry and also dislikes mincemeat, my logic was that if I didn't eat that particular one, then I would be deprived for the whole of the festive season
Ain't Nobody Here
Sounds reasonable to me .
bluekarin
I had a taste of the most delicious mince pie a few weeks ago. It was normal pastry base with mincemeat but was topped with a Viennese whirl. Super crumbly and yum
Alis girls
It was normal pastry base with mincemeat but was topped with a Viennese whirl. Super crumbly and yum oh to die for Can someone tell me why every year on run up to Christmas one of us is ill. YS has asthma and is cough cough cough - now on oral steroids. The day we all make it to the festive season without having to cancel one outing will see me dancing in the street OH thinks its because we have a weakness with ENT probs and dodgey chests. Our combined genes have made our kids susceptable to all sorts.
The Dogmother
Back to the aforementioned ebaying of the dining table... the bidding went really well and it sold for more than I expected so I messaged the winner to ask if they'd mind paying cash on collection, reminding them of the listing which described the size and sheer weight of the table, and that they'd need 2 strong people and a van to shift it. Asked them to contact me with a suggested collection time and gave them a selection of choices. Reply confirmed that they'd like ME to pay cash on collection and wanting to collect 1-2pm on Saturday - NOT one of my suggested times Turns out that the winner speaks virtually no English, which explains the confusion. Turned up to collect the table and arrived an hour and a half late, despite having my mobile number and instructions to text if they would be delayed. He was accompanied by a heavily pregnant wife, who was certainly in no fit state to help lug the items, and was driving a Mondeo estate!!!! I helped him take the legs off the table, and ferried the 6 chairs out to my front garden, helped carry the massively heavy table top out and then left them to it!!! I did peek out of the upstairs window to see if they were going to fit it all in that car, and they were still at it 10 minutes later
Alis girls
I wonder if hair colour if you are a woman denotes how people eg men speak to you. I admit to having blonde moments aka menopause madness and at present am blonde (with roots to be sorted this week ) the reason I ask is that yesterday when ordering my turkey from a well know store I felt like giving the butcher a smack " can I order a turkey please" I asked Butcher " yes love what type?" Me (a dead one would be preferable!!) " free range please - any idea what size is recommended for 8 people plus a bit extra!" Long discussion on size and he decided on a 5kg one would be ok and the proceeded to whip 2 huge pieces of pork out of fridge to show me how big 5kg was!!! The fact it was totally the wrong shape didnt seem to bother him. I couldnt recall how big a bird we had last year. He then painstakingly explained where to pick it up in store and did I know what a turkey looked like I decided I couldnt be bothered to tell him I spent my childhood in rural Derbyshire and knew what a turkey was blah blah. I thanked him and wandered off gobsmacked - I admit to having mad moments but wonder if a brunette would have been treated the same way. chickencam
So pleased to have my DS back home from his first term at St Andrews. Haven't seen him since 6th September. He seems so well and happy, this is all we wish for as parents
bluekarin
Gosh, thats a long time without seeing them isn't it? Will be weird when my eldest goes next Sept All part of growing I suppose. The Dogmother
My Rosie is off to LIverpool today to a 2 day conference for year 12s who want to go into medicine; she's travelling up by train with a friend from school, and the programme has all the students booked into the same hotel and they will be chaperoned. Still, it's her first big trip away from home, and a big step - she's level-headed though, so should be OK. Sadly, I have work commitments, which I can't get out of, or I'd drive them up there. chickencam
I find that so long as they are happy so am I. He is still very happy with his American girlfriend, I am still amazed that they managed to sustain their long distance relationship then turn it into being at the same university. They do have a month apart again now though, her loss is our gain
Lewis
Hope Rosie has a great time, C! A friend is doing Veterinary at Liverpool and loves it. Glad to hear DS is home too cc. It's the middle of Finals week here and I'm so ready to go home for Christmas! I've done 9 exams so far this month and just 3 more to go - I'm doing Anatomy tomorrow and leaving Genetics and Milk Hygiene until January. Flying home on Saturday

The Dogmother
I have just emailed ASDA after one of their vans cut me up really badly on a roundabout; they were driving so fast, that I don't think they even saw me, and had I not stood on the brakes, they would probably have hit me. They literally drove straight across a mini-roundabout, not noticing that I was joining the roundabout from the entry on their right Not good enough I'm afraid
patsylabrador
Had a lovely day at London Zoo today with some of my in-laws who are much nicer to me than my laws. I think these are my favourite photos but my mind is buzzing with all the creatures/nature that I saw.
Cat tails
I've been to London Zoo once and loved it! I recall they had a very large penguin exibit.
